Volunteer Position Description
Position Title: Children’s Zoo Assistant
Location: Valley Zoo
Purpose/Goals of Position: The purpose of the Children’s Zoo Attendant is to ensure that all patrons of the
Children’s Zoo have a safe and fun experience. Volunteers assist staff to keep
the Children’s zoo safe and clean.
Purpose/Goals of Unit: The purpose of the children’s zoo is to give children a pleasant and safe ‘close-
up’ experience with animals. Volunteers will be part of the petting zoo team
who deliver the service to the public.
Responsibilities: -Ensure Children’s Zoo is clean and clear of hazards
-Assist with letting patrons in and out of the area
-Assist with feeding the animals
-Interact with children and parents in a positive way
-Communicate problems as they arise
Training & Supervision Volunteers receive one orientation session of the Valley Zoo that includes safety
practices, sign in procedures, customer service, and emergency training.
Further hands on work experience will begin when you start working directly with
the petting zoo staff.
Requirements: -Experience working with animals an asset
-Must be 13 years or older (or accompanied by an adult)
-Previous volunteer experience an asset
- Successfully complete a Police Information Check
- Attend all mandatory training sessions
-Ensure you follow the Health and Safety Standards for your area
Health & Safety: Volunteers will learn about safety in the compulsory orientations session

Time Commitment: A minimum of one shift per week on a specified day.
Shifts are the morning shift, 8:30 - 12:30 or the afternoon shift which is 12:30 -
4:30.
Length of Appointment: Petting zoo volunteer terms can not exceed one year. A three month
probationary period is in effect for all Valley Zoo Volunteers.
