is thought to be a
neurological
disorder
by many in the
medical field.

O It is now believed
that Spasmodic
Dysphonia is caused
by the malfunctioning
of the laryngeal
nerve that runs from
the brain …
…to the larynx, a.k.a., the voice box.

5. What is Spasmodic Dysphonia, anyway?
O The
malfunction
occurs when
the Laryngeal
Nerve causes
the vocal folds
to spasm.

7. What is Spasmodic Dysphonia, anyway?
O In most cases, when the vocal cords
spasm, they slam shut preventing air
from passing through them.
This is the ADDUCTOR form of
Spasmodic Dysphonia.

8. What is Spasmodic Dysphonia, anyway?
O In some cases, when the
vocal cords spasm, they
fail to close; remaining
open, so air passes
through them – the cords
do not vibrate to create
sound.
This is the ABDUCTOR form of
Spasmodic Dysphonia.

9. What is Spasmodic Dysphonia, anyway?
O In other cases, when the
vocal folds spasm, they
will present both
ADDuctor and ABductor
symptoms. This results in
hoarse, breathy, choppy,
and tremulous speech.
This is the MIXED form of
Spasmodic Dysphonia.

O So, what CAUSES Spasmodic
Dysphonia?
Currently, there are only theories
for the cause or causes. More
research is definitely needed!
Some of the most common
theories are …
Genetics
Viral
Infection
Improper
Stress Voice Use …

11. What is Spasmodic Dysphonia, anyway?
O Is there a cure?
It depends on who you ask.
Many in the medical field say
there is no known cure for
this rare voice disorder ...
Lifetime “management” seems to be the
general prognosis.

12. What is Spasmodic Dysphonia, anyway?
O REMEMBER: All is NOT Doom & Gloom!
While any voice
disorder can be
frustrating,
(to say the least!),
it is NOT
a life-threatening
condition.
