• Safety and security
o Automatic collision notification: Press the SOS button and you’re connected to a
Mercedes operator who will notify 911 and stay on the line until help arrives using
the car’s GPS coordinates to find you.
o Automatic alarm notification: Mercedes will alert you by e-mail, text message or
phone call, if your alarm goes off. If your ride’s been stolen, the system will help
police track it down.
o Vehicle finder: Lost your car in the CostCo parking lot? An app on your
smartphone will show you where it’s parked. You also can lock and unlock your
doors remotely from just about anywhere using your phone.
o Vehicle information: Got a question or a problem with your car? Press the “i”
button on the overhead console and you’re connected to a Mercedes-Benz
operator. The dealer connect feature will hook you up with your nearest dealer.
• Convenience:
o Once you make a selection, the “Send to Benz” function automatically calculates
your route and sends directions to the navigation system.
o Concierge service: Pay extra (more on that in a moment) and you get 24/7 access
to a customer-service rep who will help you make dinner reservations, order
flowers, buy tickets to the opera, book a flight, whatever.
• Navigation:
o Get real-time maps and directions to any destination by sending an address from
your phone to your car.
o Convert any of your web searches to addresses automatically sent to the car’s
navigation system.
o Program frequently driven routes, check for traffic and find alternatives.
o Comprehensive navigation assistance: You can use Google Maps and your
computer to send addresses, points of interest or driving directions from your
computer directly to the car’s navigation system. The mbrace database also
includes more than 15 million points of interest. If all else fails and you get
completely lost, the route assistance feature will connect you with an operator to
get you going.
• Mercedes-Benz Apps:
o Use Yelp to identify nearby restaurants or other services.
o Connect with your friends via Facebook.

7.1 Expert Opinion-Broadcom
Broadcom is an Irvine, California-based communications technology company specialising in
semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications. The company was founded in
1991 and has more than 40 offices in the US, Europe and Asia Pacific.
Its main product in the Connected Car environment is their BroadR-Reach Ethernet automotive
solution which allows multiple in-vehicle systems, such as infotainment, safety systems and on
board-diagnostics, to simultaneously access information over a single pair unshielded twisted
cable. BroadR-Reach Ethernet is based on standard Ethernet but its upper layer has been
optimised enabling it to deliver 100Mbps of data, video, audio or commands. According to
Broadcom, the solution not only offers high bandwidth but it can also reduce connectivity costs by
potentially up to 80% and the cabling weight of the car by up to 30%.
Broadcom is also collaborating with leading automotive OEMs and Tier-1s through the OPEN
ALLIANCE, a 200-member consortium including Toyota, BMW and Daimler, to establish the
100Mbps BroadR-Reach Ethernet as the in-car network standard for the whole automotive
industry.

Broadcom: Broadcom is a leader in communications technology focusing both on wired and
wireless solutions. We provide the consumer commercial space with everything from consumer
desktops, notebook PCs for Ethernet connectivity all the way through to the GEPON, DSL, VDSL
space and then into the service providers, carriers and so on. But as a leader in communications
technology we definitely see a trend in the automotive industry in regards to the Connected Car.
