5. Leading mPayment Companies
While there are some truly global brands for mPayment, many of the important players operate at a
national or regional level. Since mPayment standards are few, a limited scope of operation reduces
time-to-market and allows mPayment providers to focus on their core competences in a familiar
environment.

5.1 eBay
Ebay is a US-based e-commerce giant specialising in online auctions. Because its business is
geared towards site users making online payments, eBay has acquired a number of mPayment
platforms to create a more stable user experience.

In efforts to maximise its profits on the mPayment market, eBay is targeting a variety of business
models and submarkets with its acquisitions.

5.1.1 PayPal Mobile
Paypal Mobile is an mPayments service offered by eBay’s wholly-owned subsidiary PayPal (which,
in 2013, accounts for 40% of eBay revenue). The company, which counts 120 million users
worldwide, offers P2P mobile payments between friends or merchants and also provides facilities
for online shopping on eBay through mobile phones.

The mobile payment volume on PayPal Mobile has been increasing significantly in the last two
years. On Black Friday (a pre-holiday period shopping day in the US) and Thanksgiving 2011,
Paypal Mobile usage increased by over 500% YoY. In 2012, Paypal processed over $14 billion in
mobile payments alone, which place it, in terms of the transactional value carried over its servers,
on the same level as some leading national markets.

PayPal has been bringing about many new innovations in their Google Android and Apple
applications. In May 2011, PayPal Mobile launched their checkmate service in the US. The service
lets consumers transfer or deposit their cheques by simply taking a photo of the cheque. The
money gets added to their PayPal account, with the ability to let users store the app on Android’s
removable SD card.

PayPal mobile also launched their new fundraising application called the FundRazr. The PayPal
Mobile for iPhone app launched a FundRazr function, which allows consumers to create and
manage campaigns to raise money for their favourite causes. Fully integrated with Facebook, the

vouchers, discounts, promotions, and marketing efforts. The platform is centrally managed in the
cloud and can be accessed remotely.

VeriFone is a leading payment solutions provider for US retailers. Over one million NFC-capable
VeriFone MX Solutions systems have been deployed in the US, encompassing 70% of the top 200
retail companies. VeriFone NFC solutions span multiple POS environments from small to large
retailers, including major retail outlets, grocery stores, gas pumps, convenience stores, taxis,
restaurants, mobile merchants, and self-service kiosks.

5.11 UMPay China
Founded in 2003, Union Mobile Pay (UMPay) is a joint-venture between China Mobile, the
country’s largest operator, and China UnionPay, China’s only inter-bank fund-transfer network.

Focused on mobile payments and with the support of two industry giants, UMPay has direct
access to capital and technology resources to grow its business in China’s payment market. The
company has over half a billion registered users and annual transaction value exceeds $9 billion
US, although these include the companies e-bank online transactions, pre-authorised credit card
payments, batch payments, etc.

Bank account payment binds the mobile phone number of China Mobile with the bank account of
the mobile phone holder. Through various modes of operation like SMS, WAP, HTML5, USSD
super and KJava, users can manage bank accounts remotely and securely. Via mobile phone, the
payment functions of financing, bill payment, shopping and other applications based on bank
account payment is realised.

5.12 PayMate India
PayMate is an Indian mobile commerce company that has built the largest mobile payments
network in India. PayMate offers mobile payment services including flight, train, and movie
bookings, mobile top up, online and retail shopping, and dining.

PayMate has been successful in spreading its brand by offering an integrated merchant
acceptance solution: PayPOS. In addition to accepting the company’s branded TAP service,
PayPOS provides analytics as well as inventory, offer, and loyalty management tools.

Founded in May 2006, PayMate has built a payments network in India with over 3,000 online
stores and 12,000 merchant partners including Futurebazaar, Indiaplaza, Indiatimes, Autsun,

Leading mPayment Companies While there are some truly global brands for mPayment, many of the important players operate at a national or regional level. Since mPayment standards are few, a limited scope of operation reduces time-to-market and allows mPayment providers to focus on their core competences in a familiar environment. 5.1 eBay Ebay is a US-based e-commerce giant specialising in online auctions. Because its business is geared towards site users making online payments, eBay has acquired a number of mPayment platforms to create a more stable user experience. In efforts to maximise its profits on the mPayment market, eBay is targeting a variety of business models and submarkets with its acquisitions. 5.1.1 PayPal Mobile Paypal Mobile is an mPayments service offered by eBay’s wholly-owned subsidiary PayPal (which, in 2013, accounts for 40% of eBay revenue). The company, which counts 120 million users worldwide, offers P2P mobile payments between friends or merchants and also provides facilities for online shopping on eBay through mobile phones. The mobile payment volume on PayPal Mobile has been increasing significantly in the last two years. On Black Friday (a pre-holiday period shopping day in the US) and Thanksgiving 2011, Paypal Mobile usage increased by over 500% YoY. In 2012, Paypal processed over $14 billion in mobile payments alone, which place it, in terms of the transactional value carried over its servers, on the same level as some leading national markets. PayPal has been bringing about many new innovations in their Google Android and Apple applications. In May 2011, PayPal Mobile launched their checkmate service in the US. The service lets consumers transfer or deposit their cheques by simply taking a photo of the cheque. The money gets added to their PayPal account, with the ability to let users store the app on Android’s removable SD card. PayPal mobile also launched their new fundraising application called the FundRazr. The PayPal Mobile for iPhone app launched a FundRazr function, which allows consumers to create and manage campaigns to raise money for their favourite causes. The platform is centrally managed in the cloud and can be accessed remotely. VeriFone is a leading payment solutions provider for US retailers. Over one million NFC-capable VeriFone MX Solutions systems have been deployed in the US, encompassing 70% of the top 200 retail companies. VeriFone NFC solutions span multiple POS environments from small to large retailers, including major retail outlets, grocery stores, gas pumps, convenience stores, taxis, restaurants, mobile merchants, and self-service kiosks. 5.11 UMPay China Founded in 2003, Union Mobile Pay (UMPay) is a joint-venture between China Mobile, the country’s largest operator, and China UnionPay, China’s only inter-bank fund-transfer network. Focused on mobile payments and with the support of two industry giants, UMPay has direct access to capital and technology resources to grow its business in China’s payment market. The company has over half a billion registered users and annual transaction value exceeds $9 billion US, although these include the companies e-bank online transactions, pre-authorised credit card payments, batch payments, etc. Bank account payment binds the mobile phone number of China Mobile with the bank account of the mobile phone holder. Through various modes of operation like SMS, WAP, HTML5, USSD super and KJava, users can manage bank accounts remotely and securely. Via mobile phone, the payment functions of financing, bill payment, shopping and other applications based on bank account payment is realised. 5.12 PayMate India PayMate is an Indian mobile commerce company that has built the largest mobile payments network in India. PayMate offers mobile payment services including flight, train, and movie bookings, mobile top up, online and retail shopping, and dining. PayMate has been successful in spreading its brand by offering an integrated merchant acceptance solution: PayPOS. In addition to accepting the company’s branded TAP service, PayPOS provides analytics as well as inventory, offer, and loyalty management tools.
