7. Expert Opinion
7.1 Xeikon __
Visiongain sought the expertise of Filip Weymans, Director of Segment Marketing and Business
Development Labels & Packaging at Xeikon. Xeikon has been in business for more than 20 years,
and were the pioneers in digital label packaging printing. Making a roll fed machine from day one in
1993; having a roll fed machine is key to having a solution for label printing. In terms of products,
with reference to the labels and packaging group they have 2 main segments. In the label segment
Xeikon has 3 applications that they serve; one being self-adhesive, the other one being IML (in
mould labels), and the third one heat transfer labels. Self-adhesives are the most dominant - they
represent 80% of the Company’s sales within L&P. The second pillar is folding cartons, where over
the past years Xeikon has been developing specific products that make their positions in the
folding cartons stronger. From this year on the Company plans to focus heavily on expanding their
presence in the folding cartons market, to become a dominant player, maintaining its presence at
the same time within Labels. Please refer to section 8.1for a more in-depth analysis of Xeikon’s
company profile, product offerings and annual performance.
7.1.1 Self-adhesive Labels Account for Highest Sales
Visiongain: What application represents the biggest market share within your labels and
packaging group?
Filip Weymans: If you look from the application point of view then it’s self-adhesive, followed by
heat transfer labels, folding carton, and finally IML. We are keeping a strong presence within the
heat transfer labels and the self-adhesives. From a geographic stand point, we are present on a
worldwide base, so we don’t make a difference there.
7.1.2 Electrophotography Versus Inkjet Printing
Visiongain: What are the advantages and disadvantages digital technology has over its
counterparts?
Filip Weymans: The biggest differentiator with us compared to other digital technologies is that we
are using dry toner electrophotography and if you look to the two big classes within the digital
labels and packaging, then you have first of all electrophotography and inkjet printing. The benefit
of having electrophotography is first of all the very accurate dot formation and dot positioning,
which is important to achieve very high quality. That is the reason why those technologies currently

Expert Opinion 7.1 Xeikon __ Visiongain sought the expertise of Filip Weymans, Director of Segment Marketing and Business Development Labels & Packaging at Xeikon. Xeikon has been in business for more than 20 years, and were the pioneers in digital label packaging printing. Making a roll fed machine from day one in 1993; having a roll fed machine is key to having a solution for label printing. In terms of products, with reference to the labels and packaging group they have 2 main segments. In the label segment Xeikon has 3 applications that they serve; one being self-adhesive, the other one being IML (in mould labels), and the third one heat transfer labels. Self-adhesives are the most dominant - they represent 80% of the Company’s sales within L&P. The second pillar is folding cartons, where over the past years Xeikon has been developing specific products that make their positions in the folding cartons stronger. From this year on the Company plans to focus heavily on expanding their presence in the folding cartons market, to become a dominant player, maintaining its presence at the same time within Labels. Filip Weymans: If you look from the application point of view then it’s self-adhesive, followed by heat transfer labels, folding carton, and finally IML. We are keeping a strong presence within the heat transfer labels and the self-adhesives. From a geographic stand point, we are present on a worldwide base, so we don’t make a difference there. 7.1.2 Electrophotography Versus Inkjet Printing Visiongain: What are the advantages and disadvantages digital technology has over its counterparts? Filip Weymans: The biggest differentiator with us compared to other digital technologies is that we are using dry toner electrophotography and if you look to the two big classes within the digital labels and packaging, then you have first of all electrophotography and inkjet printing. The benefit of having electrophotography is first of all the very accurate dot formation and dot positioning, which is important to achieve very high quality.
