3. INTRODUCTION
In Thermal Power Station fuel burns & use the
resultant to make the steam, which drives

4. The Coal based Thermal Power Plant
can be divided in Three Parts
COAL FLOW
AIR FLOW
WATER(STEAM) FLOW
5. COAL IS TRANSFERRED FROM COAL MINES TO
POWER PLANT BY RAILWAY IN WAGONS
CRUSHER HOUSE (CRUSHED TO 20mm)
DEAD STORAGE (STORED FOR 40 DAYS COAL SUPPLY)
PULVERISER(PULVARISED TO 200 mesh)
BOILER (MIXED WITH HOT AIR AND BURNT)
7. Some Important Components
BOILER :
The boiler is a rectangular furnace about 15m sides and 40m tall. Coal is
burned inside the combustion chamber of boiler.
DRUM:
The temp is 540˚C and pressure is 150kg/sq.cm
SUPERHEATER:
After leaving the Boiler the steam is heated above its saturation
temperature in Superheater. The temp is 540˚C and pressure is
150kg/sq.cm
8. REHEATER:
Reheater is also steam boiler component in which heat is
added to this intermediate-pressure steam. The temp is
540˚C and pressure is 35kg/sq.cm
Condenser & Cooling Tower:
It is used to condense the steam coming out of the Low
pressure turbine
Economizer:
Function of Economizer is to recover some of the heat from
the flue gas and utilizes it to heat the feed water to going
to the Boiler
9. TURBO GENERATOR
A turbo generator is the combination of
a turbine directly connected to an electric generator for
the generation of electric power.
At NTPC Kahalgaon hydrogen-cooled
turbo generator is installed.
It is a turbo generator with gaseous
hydrogen as a coolant

10. GENERATOR TRANSFORMER
From the generator the electricity then goes to a transformer
where the voltage is increased to about 420kV before sending it
via cables
