COMMODORE’S
CORNER
Goree Waugh
Welcome back everyone!
I hope you all had a great summer wherever you spent it. I had a very rewarding
summer working part-time for the Venice Youth Boating Association (VYBA) as their
Summer Admin. It was a great experience watching children between the age of 9
and 12 learn how to sail. It brought back my own experience in learning to sail. I am
sure it would have done the same for you. We will be hearing more about the VYBA
as we go through the year.
After being the Tell Tale editor for the past 5 years, I now have the job of writing my
own article and having someone else edit it (starting with the October issue). Kathryn
and Greg DiNinno have stepped up to take on the task of the Tell Tale and the Direc-
tory for this year. We have several new Officers and Board members as well a com-
mittee volunteers. During this coming year we will be doing some new activities as
well as some old ones. Please step up to give us a hand. Your support makes this
the club we all want it to be.
One of the areas we really want to focus on this year is membership. I know we have
talked about it every year, but this year we want to go a little bit further and get our-
selves known out in our community.
Our first big membership event will be the Women’s Sertoma Club of Venice annual
Sun Fiesta. It will be held October 19-21. This event brings in well over 20,000 visi-
tors to Venice. That is a lot of exposure. We are planning on having a tent/booth to
display our organization information and pass out flyer/brochures and cards about the
VSS. We will need your help in volunteering for a couple of hours to pass out materi-
als and answer questions. This can be a real draw in developing an awareness of
the VSS and what we have to offer.
Gaining new members is just a part of increasing membership. The other part is
2
3. keeping new and old members interested and participating in the organization. Carol
Turner and her volunteers are working on a plan to do just that. When Carol calls or
asks for advice or suggestions, please give her your input.
This summer John Lynch organized sailing races on Thursday nights. Check out
John’s article for details and on our website under Racing. I think John has started
something that will carry on into our racing season and beyond.
Our VSS calendar is pretty full this year. Our first membership meeting will be
Wednesday, September 12th. at 6:30pm at the Venice Community Center. The “Last
Dog Watch” cruise will be September 22. You don’t have to travel far to attend. This
is followed by the Sun Fiesta, October 19-21 and our Steak and Sail cruise October
27th. Be sure to check on the details in the Tell Tales and on our VSS website.
I look forward to seeing each of you all for a great VSS season!
Goree Waugh commodore@venice-sailing-squadron.org
Vice Commodore
Welcome to the VSS 2012-2013 season! I have had an eventful year so
far taking care of Breezin’ and having to prepare her for both tropical
storms Debbie and Isaac Also, keeping a watchful eye on Chantilly, the
Winger’s beautiful Beneteau, while they are up North. Lucky for us in
Venice, we were able to cope with both storms without them leaving us any prob-
lems.
As I look forward to serving the Squadron this season, I pledge to assist our Commo-
dore in any way I can. We have a great Board of Directors and I know they are
ready to serve you all with an eventful sailing schedule.
I have been given the task of making the VSS more visible and inviting to the resi-
dents and visitors who are here in Venice. With this task, I would like to invite you,
our talented journalists, copywriters, art directors, etc. to assist me in making this
happen. Our first big membership event will be the Sun Fiesta. We need your sup-
port. I will be counting on you to help me in making the VSS a fun and exciting
group of sailors in Paradise!

Fleet Captain, Racing
The VSS racing season starts in October, with our first race day being the October
6th. The Sarasota Bay Yachting Association Boat of the Year series will begin with
the annual Sarasota Sailing Squadron Labor Day Regatta on September 1-2 and
the Bradenton Yacht Club Kick-Off Regatta on September 22-23.
A new racing opportunity started up this summer with the Green Flash Thursday
night “beer can” series. The race format is extremely simple. The course is a 5 nm
equilateral triangle that is the same each week, only varying by which direction the
fleet sails around it. The start and finish line are immediately south of the South Jet-
ty. The races are pursuit style, with the slower boats starting first and the faster
ones later so, in principle, we all get to the finish line at once. An important attraction
is that after the race most of us meet at Marker 4 Restaurant for a few beers and
food.
The series has proven to be more popular than I would have predicted with 15 differ-
ent boats having sailed at least one race and a normal participation level around 10.
That is a considerably higher turnout than VSS has experienced in recent years in
5
6. day, 8/29, we have sailed all 12 of the races that have been scheduled since the be-
ginning of June. Not one has been drifted out or canceled because of a storm. You
can read about the program and see the results at http://home.comcast.net/
~venicesailor/greenflashracing/.
I hope to see you out on a race course soon.
John Lynch racing@venice-sailing-squadron.org
Fleet Captain, Operations
After looking back and also asking others about our past pot-luck dinners last year,
we finally found the answer: Everyone brings an entrée and additionally some of us
bring a salad or dessert or bring both. Remember to bring a dish that will serve 6-10
people. If you bring something that requires a bowl, please pick up some paper
bowls for servings.
As we move along this year and as Goree has pointed out about membership, we
will need to make sure we have plenty for those who come the first time. We had a
terrific variety of wonderful recipes and plenty of food for all last year with this recipe
for pot-lucks.
