https://youtu.be/3FE2HhQnFh0 I am thankful for the CZI scholarship as a DeepLabCut AI resident to study the neuroscience of sexual diversity. DeepLabCut is a deep-learning-based open-source toolbox for 3D pose estimation. It has been used in a wide range of applications e.g. chicken agriculture, surgery, dog poop detector, infant exploratory behaviour, lizard robotics, exergaming biofeedback, 3D triangulation of cheetahs chasing prey, spider webbing, stroke rehabilitation, wildlife conservation, pupil tracking, parrot tripedal locomotion, fear behaviour, dog emotions, functional recovery after spinal cord injury etc. http://www.mackenziemathislab.org/deeplabcut A behaviomics approach like DeepLabCut significantly benefits my research on sexual behaviour in a steroid-independent and collective behaviour context. Traditional methods are limited by their subjectivity, biased in selecting parameters to measure, and extremely labour-intensive and time-consuming. There are also limits to human perception and language to accurately detect and describe behaviour. At a broader level, behaviomics improves animal ethics and biodiversity. For animal ethics, behaviomics increase the accuracy and throughput of the data, which reduces the number of animals for the same amount of data. These data also contribute to developing in silico and robotic models that can replace animal experiments. For biodiversity, behaviomics allows researchers to move away from behaviour recordings in the lab in “labesticated” animal models and captive species. More wildlife in naturalistic settings can be studied including footage from drones and satellites. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-022-27980-y From the experiences of people like Deborah Raji and Timnit Gebru, we know the field of AI is dominated by and predominantly serves the WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic) population, particularly white, cisgender, and heterosexual males. It excludes marginalised minorities from its creations which led to race and gender misidentification problems, as well as resulting in the “weapons of math destruction”, as coined by Cathy O'Neil. We need to improve this by embracing perspectives beyond Western science, for example, by incorporating Indigenous communities and Arabic philosophies. There’s also a hegemony of software licensing that provides additional economic barriers to access. DeepLabCut hopes to reduce this barrier by being open source. https://www.currentaffairs.org/.../software-licesing-is-a... I gave this talk at a conference for young scientists in New Zealand, "Running Hot": www.runninghot.org.nz. It was a great meeting. My slides are mostly images, so may not make too much sense. Abstract follows: Impressed with the telephone, Arthur Mee predicted in 1898 that if videoconferencing could be developed, ‘earth will be in truth a paradise.’ Since his time, rapid technological change, in particular in telecommunications, has transformed the scientific playing field in ways that while not entirely paradisical, certainly have profound implications for New Zealand scientists. The Internet has abolished distance, as Mee also predicted–a New Zealand scientist can participate as fully in online discussions as anyone else, and their blog can be every bit as influential. Exponential improvements in networks, computing, sensors, and data storage are also profoundly transforming the practice of science in many disciplines. But those seeking to leverage these advances become painfully familiar with the ‘dirty underbelly’ of exponentials: if you don’t constantly innovate, you can fall behind exponentially fast. Such considerations pose big challenges for the individual scientist and for institutions, for researchers and educators, and for research funders. Some of the old ways of researching and educating need to be preserved, others need to be replaced to take advantage of new methods. But what should we preserve? What should we seek to change?

A talk given at the Stepping into the Future Conference, 24 Apr, 2002. Summary: Does the History, Dynamics, and Structure of our Universe give any evidence that it is inherently “Good”? Does it appear to be statistically protective of adapted complexity and intelligence? Which aspects of the big history of our universe appear to be random? Which are predictable? What drives universal and societal accelerating change, and why have they both been so stable? What has developed progressively in our universe, as opposed to merely evolving randomly? Will humanity’s future be to venture to the stars (outer space) or will we increasingly escape our physical universe, into physical and virtual inner space (the transcension hypothesis)? In Earth’s big history, what can we say about what has survived and improved? Do we see any progressive improvement in humanity’s thoughts or actions? When is anthropogenic risk existential or developmental (growing pains)? In either case, how can we minimize such risk? What values do well-built networks have? What can we learn about the nature of our most adaptive complex networks, to improve our personal, team, organizational, societal, global, and universal futures? I’ll touch on each of these vital questions, which I’ve been researching and writing about since 1999, and discussing with a community of scholars at Evo-Devo Universe since 2008. The biological and medical research chronically suffers from the low reproducibility of experimental studies since the traditional text format of science journals cannot provide an adequate description of details and nuances of complex experimental procedures. This creates a critical “bottleneck” problem of knowledge transfer for research and education. Addressing this challenge, a new generation of science journals employs video online to provide a systematic visualized publication of experimental studies. Visualization through video greatly facilitates the understanding and learning of experimental procedures enhancing knowledge transfer and productivity in research and education. The video-based publication in the rigorous academic format requires a new set of concepts and technical approaches to production, publication and dissemination processes. As the publisher of Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE), the first video journal for biological sciences indexed in MEDLINE and PubMed, I would like to provide an overview of the growing field of video publication and discuss its technical challenges, implications for scholarly communication and acceptance in the academic and library community. This lecture will address both of these traditions and their relation to one another. It will ground neuroethics in the hard questions of neuroscience, and the problems that arise when we must rely on partial or contingent knowledge.
