“Pattened GaN Quasi-Phase Matched (QPM) Nonlinear
Optical Crystal: Manufacturing Methods and its
Application for High Power THz Sources”
Dr. Seongsin Margaret Kim
and Patrick Kung
2. • Current devices implementing THz frequencies
– High loss due to high dispersion at pump laser
– Uses 2 μm pump lasers, which is very rare and it has a
high cost
– Can use only low laser power
– Very limited laser choices
Problems with Current Devices
3. • The THz frequency range used is effective for molecular
spectrometry, but harmless to humans
• Structures used can extend the emission from mid-and far-
infared to THz spectral range for effective radiation/detection
of THz signals
Our Technology
4. • We use a pattened GaN quasi-phase matched
nonlinear optical crystal
• More efficient due to strong mode confinement,
high-facet reflectivity, and low-waveguide losses
• No need for special lasers: pump lasers in 0.7-1 μm
exist already exist (lowers cost)
• Higher thermal conductivity than GaAs
