WHAT IS LUCK? COLLEGE STUDENTS WEIGH IN
MARCH 03, 2015 THEPULSE NO COMMENTS
’Tis the season to be lucky. St. Patrick’s Day is almost here, and Worcester college students are finding
that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. In honor of the little guy and his pot of gold, we asked area
college students to give us their definitions of luck. Students all across Worcester ~ from Clark University
to Worcester Polytechnic Institute to Assumption College ~ weighed in with their thoughts, and most
thought that being lucky is not a sporadic occurrence but is, in fact, created by individuals.
Worcester students think that luck is everywhere, and that anyone can make his or her own luck. Most
students said luck is more likely to come from their own hard work.
Jana Kelnhofer, a freshman at Clark University, said she believes luck can only stem from hard work.
“The harder you work, the luckier you get.”
The majority of college students feel this way; especially when talking about the opportunities that arise
in college. Duc Tien, a freshman at WPI, defines luck as “a chance or opportunity given to you,” adding
that “when luck comes, it can be good.” Even though Tien feels very lucky, he still is “trying to do
everything on my own and trying my best.” Tien said he believes his admission to Worcester Polytechnic
Institute (he wants to be an engineer) is the luckiest thing to happen to him.
Some students find the simple things in life are the luckiest. Cassie Schultz, a sophomore from
Assumption College, said she believes “in general, just being lucky (is) having good fortune.” Even
something as simple as “rooming with my best friend, Courtney,” is lucky to Schultz.
Wise 2
For Devan Beaulac, a senior at WPI, money goes hand in hand with luck. The luckiest moments of her
life are “when I find money on the ground.” One time, Beaulac said, she “found $200 in a book I got at
The Salvation Army.”
“Good things happening for no apparent reason whatsoever” is what luck means to Ashley Impagliazzo, a
senior at Assumption College. However, her luckiest experience is “getting into vet school,” a piece of
luck that also needed some hard work.
But is luck real? It’s all in the eye of the beholder.
Kelnhofer said luck is “a concept, whether or not it’s real,” and it can be anything from the “smallest
things to getting the job to winning the lottery.” Kelnhofer calls luck “a mystical concept …. a fantastical
spin on an everyday occurrence that people have made to celebrate success more often and make life
more interesting.”
Whether it’s real or not, we’d all like a little. Here’s hoping your St. Patrick’s Day is a lucky one!

THE ULTIMATE BEAUTY TREND ~ PERFECT EYEBROWS
APRIL 01, 2015 THEPULSE NO COMMENTS
Forget waxing and threading! Big, bold brows are the latest beauty trend this year. Thick, well-groomed
eyebrows have been seen on everyone from celebrities to everyday fashionistas. Whether they are heavy
or dainty, perfect arches and filled-in brows are great way to frame your face. Check out these ideas to
help you get perfect brows.
Eyebrow Pencils
Eyebrow pencils are perfect for filling in those gaps and bald spots, changing the overall shape of your
brow and creating a higher arch. They are also a great brow corrector. The thinner the pencil, the easier it
is to draw on precise hairs.
Tip: Make sure to use gentle strokes to avoid noticeable pencil lines. If the lines are
noticeable, using an eyebrow brush is ideal for blending. Stay within the hairline of the brow to ensure a
natural look.
Eyebrow Gels
Wise 6
Brow gels instantly fill in the entire eyebrow with just one swipe. They’re perfect for creating a hint of
hue and managing loose hairs. Look for waterproof gels to ensure the color will last all day.
Tip: Sweep the brush in an upward motion through the entire eyebrow. Don’t forget to wipe the excess
gel off the brush before use to avoid clumping.
Eyebrow Powder
Powder gives brows a heftier look if you want a thick brow. Brow powder is a bit trickier to use, as
opposed to other products, because it can be very tough to blend. But with precision and the right
applicator, brow powder can create the ultimate brow.
Tip: Make sure you find the right color for your eyebrows; try for one that closely resembles your hair
color or a shade or two lighter. Powders can come out strong, and a color that doesn’t match can ruin the
effect. Use a minimal amount of powder and build up slowly to the desired thickness and shape.
Eyebrow Waxes
Eyebrow waxes can be used as brow filler or as a way to slick down any loose hairs. Brow waxes can also
be used as a finisher after applying other brow products. Waxes keep the color and shape of the brow in
place all day and come in various shades, including clear.
Tip: Lightly brush the brow on an angle in small, short
movements to avoid an over-greased brow and unwanted matte.
When using these products, try a brow brush or a brow smudger to maintain a clean and sharp line. And
never forget to keep tweezers and brow trimmers handy to pluck the strays and trim those long, pesky
hairs!

MAKING WORCESTER A MORE LIVABLE CITY
APRIL 01, 2015 THEPULSE NO COMMENTS
The city of seven hills has much to offer, and with the right tools, all of its inhabitants can have the
ultimate Worcester experience. At least, that’s the plan. Located between Boston and Providence,
Worcester is the second largest city in Massachusetts. But even with its large population and nine
colleges, Worcester has yet to reach its full potential.
Recently, many local companies and organizations, whether professional or student-run, have devised
ways to make the city a more prosperous area. Many of these companies are still in the early stages of
development but have already made great progress and received positive feedback from the citizens of
Worcester.
In the Woo, there are various events, restaurants, shops and opportunities. However, many looking to
improve the city say there is a lack of knowledge and accessibility to and from these places. A seminal
part of this issue stems from the absence of information. Organizations that are cropping up not only want
to create more events and happenings in Worcester but also publicize these events better.
Secret City Interactive is a newly designed
organization that sets out to integrate social media with the happenings in Worcester to connect the
historic and cultural neighborhoods with their diverse and vibrant communities. Mauro DePasquale, of
Secret City, said, “Worcester is thriving with culture, yet it often gets a reputation as being a dead city.
Secret City Interactive aims to impact this issue by connecting people with their city in a way that is
entertaining, engaging and positive.” Secret City’s goals include increasing accessibility for pedestrians
and helping citizens learn more about the city. DePasquale said, “Worcester has its fair share of hidden
gems, forgotten history and stories to share. Secret City Interactive is a way for folks to share and
discover interesting information and cultural happenings.”
Wise 8
Similar to the goals of Secret City Interactive, WooConnect is an up-and-coming
mobile app for Worcester students, designed by Clark University students, Alex Turgeon and Abhijit
Singh. This app, which plans to launch in the fall, is designed to connect students throughout the
consortium. Their mobile app idea won the 2014 Eureka Contest at Clark. Turgeon said he noticed the
“reoccurring theme that Worcester is doing a lot right but marketing in the wrong ways,” which is where
he thinks WooConnect will come into play.
In the summer of 2013, Singh said, he and Turgeon “both worked at Clark for ITS and talked to a lot of
people.” Singh noticed the lack of “cohesive collaboration” between companies in Worcester and wanted
to find a way to give students the “tools to go out and explore.” Turgeon and Singh began brainstorming
ideas for the app. Since it is a student-run company, Turgeon said WooConnect is “a learning as you go”
process. Turgeon said he believes this app will help Worcester be “up and coming from a kind of
industrial swamp” and become “something that will resonate in the city.”
Josh Croke and Kyla Pacheco are trying to support efforts to
make Worcester a more livable city. They founded Action! Worcester, a company that combines the ideas
of Worcester locals and students with plans of action. Pacheco,a career advisor at Massachusetts College
of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, said “Worcester is not where we want it to be, and there’s a lot of room
Wise 9
for improvement.” Pacheco believes that working “from the grassroots” is the best method for “cultural
change.”
Croke, a recent Worcester Polytechnic Institute graduate, said Action! Worcester plans to increase the
“interconnectivity between students and young professionals in Worcester communities,” as well as
“connect students in the consortium,” which ultimately helps the city come “together as a community.”
There is “an entrepreneurial buzz going on in the city,” and “connecting the companies together to
facilitate great events is a primary way to increase livability,” Croke said.
Pacheco added that Action! Worcester has “a bunch of goals and a bunch of stuff coming up…it’s a
matter of getting the message out.”
These three companies, as well as various others across the city, foresee positive changes and advances
for Worcester within the next five to 10 years.
DePasquale said, “The amenities seem to be multiplying. …There are a lot of shared work communities
and very positive movements. …There is a strong culture of very creative and proactive folks in
Worcester, and there are a lot of really great projects under way.”
