NOVEMBER 2013

The PGNA DESSERT AUCTION
BLOW YOUR DIET FOR A GOOD CAUSE – THE PGNA!!
Bring your appetite and your wallet to the Schack Art Center, 2921 Hoyt
Ave. on Monday, November 11 at 6:45pm for the PGNA Dessert Auction.
Have fun and help us raise some dough to fund Port Gardner Neighborhood
projects. Our very own auctioneer extraordinaire, Gene O’Neil, will be
auctioning off Port Gardner’s sweetest creations just in time for your holiday
table. Plus, we’ll have time to socialize and sample treats before and after
the event!
We still need donations, so if you’d like to contribute your special
dessert, pies, cakes, to impress your neighbors – contact:
Christina Robertson at moosetales@aol.com, 425-252-5434, or
Jean Hewat at meanjeancreative@earthlink.net, 425-259-5212.

TAKE IT TO THE BANK… the FOOD BANK
Okay – we’ll do it for you. The PGNA is starting a neighborhood initiative to donate food every month to local food banks.
Please bring a can or two (or three) or pantry items to our November meeting.
Not sure what to bring? Check out our list of needed items at www.portgardner.net

GET LIT FOR THE HOLIDAYS!
Does your PUD bill triple in November and December? Do pilots from Paine Field mistake your yard for a runway?
When you plug in your holiday display, do the lights on your block dim? Then you should enter the Port Gardner
Holiday Lighting Contest! We are searching from the river to the bay to find the best holiday displays in our
neighborhood. All you need to do is enter! Send an email or call Christina Robertson at moosetales@aol.com,
425-252-5434, or Jean Hewat at meanjeancreative@earthlink.net, 425-259-5212. Give us your name, address, phone
number and category you’d like to be judged in by Thursday, December 5. And feel free to enter a neighbor, too!
Awards to be give are:
The Martha Stewart Award – for the home with the best “traditional” decorations.
The Tim (Home Improvement) Taylor Award – given to the home that has “most wattage.”
The Griswold Award – given to the home with the funniest, most outrageous display.
The Block Party Award – given to the street with the most decorations.
Judging will take place the weekend of December 7th and 8th, with one winner and one runner-up chosen from the
Longfellow area and the Rucker Hill area. Plus there will be a “Wild Card Award” given to a home from both areas
as well. We’ll award prizes from local businesses and restaurants at our December 9 PGNA Holiday Meeting!
So call your neighbors and start untangling those lights!

EVERETT PLANNING COMMISSION

Comprehensive Plan Update
November 12 at 6:30pm

Wall Street Building

2930 Wetmore Avenue

8th Floor Hearing Room

What will Everett look like in 2035? What plans does the City have for development, infill and increasing density in our
neighborhood? Just because you live in a single-family zone, it doesn’t mean you are protected.
The Port Gardner Neighborhood is one of only two areas that have been targeted for increased residential infill in Everett. This
means possible changes in units per lot, fee-simple subdivisions, changes in setbacks, height limits, parking requirements and mixed
use zoning. These possible changes will affect your quality of life and value of your property.
Read the information on the City of Everett’s website at http://everettwa.org/default.aspx?ID=1201. Then, come to the Workshop
and let the Planning Commission know what issues are important to you.
Together we can create and preserve the Everett of the future!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED !

PGNA PROJECT S AND EVENTS

Forgotten Creek Fall Planting

OCTOBER MEETING RECAP

Saturday, November 9 10am to noon

What a turnout for the second meeting of the new season!
Sgt. Bosman gave us a primer on when to call 911, and advised us
to use caution when reporting suspicious activity.

It's November, so it's time to plant at the Forgotten
Creek restoration project. This is the one work party
of the year at which the native trees and shrubs we've
been nurturing since early spring finally get planted.
It happens Saturday, November 9, from 10 AM
until Noon. If you can help, meet at the North
entrance to the Forgotten Creek Trail on Bond St.
by the railroad tracks.
We plant rain or shine, so wear clothes that like to get
dirty. No experience is needed. Refreshments and
tools are provided.
We'd love to have your help. If you have any
questions, contact Bob Jackson at 425 303-0127 or
bjacksonjmurphy@aol.com.

Kevin Fagerstrom from Code Enforcement presented an overview
of what property violations the department is responsible for.
Trash, unmaintained yards, abandoned cars, illegal rooming
houses, illegal parking on lawns, and hazardous buildings are
some of the issues they deal with.
The process is initiated when residents contact Code Enforcement
about a possible violation. Then, the property owner is contacted
and encouraged to solve the issue. Check this link for more
information: http://www.ci.everett.wa.us/default.aspx?ID=392
Later, Dean Smith talked about starting a neighborhood fruit tree
inventory, and will have more information on that in the future.
Victor Harris reviewed the City’s Comprehensive Plan process,
and encouraged residents to get involved, as well as gave us the
latest on Foss Shipbuilding and the Kimberly Clark property.
We then adjourned and had time to socialize with each other!

GET GROWING! SUPPORT THE CHARLES STREET P-PATCH

Since its creation, the Charles Street P-Patch on Federal Ave. and Charles St. has offered a place for neighbors
who love gardening, but don’t have the space, a sunny spot to get growing!
Port Gardner resident Robert Allan, along with Janet Pohl and Lembi Kongas are gearing up to revitalize and
reorganize this treasured spot in our neighborhood. And their task begins with the feedback and help from past
and future gardeners of the P-Patch.
There are work parties being planned in November, so check out the Port Gardeners Facebook page for more
information. In January, there will be open registration for new members. If you are interested in becoming
part of this exciting and vital community, please contact Robert Allan, the Garden Guy at gardenguy11@aol.com.
Or speak with him at the PGNA Dessert Auction, on November 11 at the Schack Art Center.

CREATE CHANGE – ORGANIZE A COMMUNITY PROJECT
Do you have an idea for a project that will improve the Port
Gardner neighborhood? Then volunteer to make a difference,
apply for a City of Everett Neighborhood Mini-Grant.

So if you have a project that you are passionate about, submit
a proposal to the PGNA Board to include in our Port Gardner
application to the City for Mini-Grant funds.

For over 11 years, the City of Everett has sponsored
Neighborhood Mini-Grants, a program that offers City
matching funds to neighborhood associations to support local
projects that enhance neighborhoods, benefits the community,
or fosters better neighbor connections.

Contact PGNA Treasurer Sheryl Becker at
shebec1@frontier.com for a Mini-Grant application and
information, or check out our website at
http://www.portgardner.net.

Residents volunteer their time, valued at $22 per hour, and the
City matches that contribution, dollar for dollar. Each
neighborhood association can receive up to $2,000 per year.

You can mail your application to: The Port Gardner
Neighborhood Association, P.O. Box 13032, Everett WA.
98206 or bring it to the January PGNA meeting on Jan. 13.

Our neighborhood has a rich history of successful volunteer
projects made possible through Mini-Grants such as:

The PGNA Board will review and select the projects that will
be included in our Mini-Grant application to the City by
January 31. Selected projects will be announced in the
February newsletter and at the February 10th PGNA Meeting.
Approval from the City of Everett will be announced within 4
to 6 weeks after January 31st.

- Forgotten Creek Natural Area
- Charles Street P-Patch
- National Night Out events
- 41st Street Flag Project
- Doyle Park clean up
- Depot Park
- Warren Street Overlook benches
- Charles Street P-Patch

PUBLIC HEARING AND PUBLIC WORKSHOP EVERETT PLANNING COMMISSION Comprehensive Plan Update November 12 at 6:30pm Wall Street Building 2930 Wetmore Avenue 8th Floor Hearing Room What will Everett look like in 2035? What plans does the City have for development, infill and increasing density in our neighborhood? Just because you live in a single-family zone, it doesn’t mean you are protected. The Port Gardner Neighborhood is one of only two areas that have been targeted for increased residential infill in Everett. This means possible changes in units per lot, fee-simple subdivisions, changes in setbacks, height limits, parking requirements and mixed use zoning. These possible changes will affect your quality of life and value of your property. Read the information on the City of Everett’s website at http://everettwa.org/default.aspx?ID=1201. Then, come to the Workshop and let the Planning Commission know what issues are important to you. Together we can create and preserve the Everett of the future! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ! • 3. 2 1 PGNA PROJECT S AND EVENTS Forgotten Creek Fall Planting OCTOBER MEETING RECAP Saturday, November 9 10am to noon What a turnout for the second meeting of the new season! Sgt. Bosman gave us a primer on when to call 911, and advised us to use caution when reporting suspicious activity. It's November, so it's time to plant at the Forgotten Creek restoration project. This is the one work party of the year at which the native trees and shrubs we've been nurturing since early spring finally get planted. It happens Saturday, November 9, from 10 AM until Noon. If you can help, meet at the North entrance to the Forgotten Creek Trail on Bond St. by the railroad tracks. We plant rain or shine, so wear clothes that like to get dirty. No experience is needed. Refreshments and tools are provided. We'd love to have your help. If you have any questions, contact Bob Jackson at 425 303-0127 or bjacksonjmurphy@aol.com. Kevin Fagerstrom from Code Enforcement presented an overview of what property violations the department is responsible for. Trash, unmaintained yards, abandoned cars, illegal rooming houses, illegal parking on lawns, and hazardous buildings are some of the issues they deal with. The process is initiated when residents contact Code Enforcement about a possible violation. Then, the property owner is contacted and encouraged to solve the issue. Check this link for more information: http://www.ci.everett.wa.us/default.aspx?ID=392 Later, Dean Smith talked about starting a neighborhood fruit tree inventory, and will have more information on that in the future. Victor Harris reviewed the City’s Comprehensive Plan process, and encouraged residents to get involved, as well as gave us the latest on Foss Shipbuilding and the Kimberly Clark property. We then adjourned and had time to socialize with each other! GET GROWING! SUPPORT THE CHARLES STREET P-PATCH Since its creation, the Charles Street P-Patch on Federal Ave. and Charles St. has offered a place for neighbors who love gardening, but don’t have the space, a sunny spot to get growing! Port Gardner resident Robert Allan, along with Janet Pohl and Lembi Kongas are gearing up to revitalize and reorganize this treasured spot in our neighborhood. And their task begins with the feedback and help from past and future gardeners of the P-Patch. There are work parties being planned in November, so check out the Port Gardeners Facebook page for more information. In January, there will be open registration for new members. If you are interested in becoming part of this exciting and vital community, please contact Robert Allan, the Garden Guy at gardenguy11@aol.com. Or speak with him at the PGNA Dessert Auction, on November 11 at the Schack Art Center. CREATE CHANGE – ORGANIZE A COMMUNITY PROJECT Do you have an idea for a project that will improve the Port Gardner neighborhood? Then volunteer to make a difference, apply for a City of Everett Neighborhood Mini-Grant. So if you have a project that you are passionate about, submit a proposal to the PGNA Board to include in our Port Gardner application to the City for Mini-Grant funds. For over 11 years, the City of Everett has sponsored Neighborhood Mini-Grants, a program that offers City matching funds to neighborhood associations to support local projects that enhance neighborhoods, benefits the community, or fosters better neighbor connections. Contact PGNA Treasurer Sheryl Becker at shebec1@frontier.com for a Mini-Grant application and information, or check out our website at http://www.portgardner.net. Residents volunteer their time, valued at $22 per hour, and the City matches that contribution, dollar for dollar. Each neighborhood association can receive up to $2,000 per year. You can mail your application to: The Port Gardner Neighborhood Association, P.O. Box 13032, Everett WA. 98206 or bring it to the January PGNA meeting on Jan. 13. Our neighborhood has a rich history of successful volunteer projects made possible through Mini-Grants such as: The PGNA Board will review and select the projects that will be included in our Mini-Grant application to the City by January 31. Selected projects will be announced in the February newsletter and at the February 10th PGNA Meeting. Approval from the City of Everett will be announced within 4 to 6 weeks after January 31st. - Forgotten Creek Natural Area - Charles Street P-Patch - National Night Out events - 41st Street Flag Project - Doyle Park clean up - Depot Park - Warren Street Overlook benches - Charles Street P-Patch - National Night Out events in Rucker Hill Park and Kiwanis Park Deadline for completed applications is January 13, 2014.
