  1. Happened on April 12th, 2012 From 8PM to 10PM At Semcac Family Planning Clinic after normal clinic hours Free STI testing available Free pizza for all who participated – Donated Free condoms, raffle prizes, soda, and education!
  2. Our program had many great strengths. We had highly qualified employees to be leading us through the process. We also had the enthusiastic and dedicated support of the SHAG members. The fact that our program is free and still included the opportunity to win prizes, along with free pizza and soda was a great strength for us. We never could have had the free program if it weren’t for our planning group being prepared and diligent with working to obtain the generous donations that made our program so great. “Approximately 75-80% of the 97 people tested during Free Testing Week were first-time testers at Semcac Clinic”. This quote from Chrissy Feine demonstrates that we had a strong enough program to reach our goal of breaking into the group of people who have never been tested. The strength that started our program out on the right foot was the fact that we worked very hard on our plans in HERS 350, and we stayed realistic with our expectations of what we could achieve in the semester with hard work.
  3. Although our program was successful, we did have some weaknesses. We were unprepared for the amount of people, although none of the patients were aware of this weakness. We did not have enough folders or cups put together or pre-labeled. We also had underestimated the amount of pizza that would be needed, but thankfully, Zazas was flexible with our changing needs. We also ran into weaknesses with gaining support from our community. Although some students who attended Pee for Pizza said it was because they had seen flyers, we were very upset because most of our flyers were ripped down pretty immediately after being hung. We also encountered difficulties with our bake sale, Condoms for Cupcakes. We though it was a fun, clever idea to fundraise for Pee for Pizza, but some WSU faculty and administrators were offended by our efforts. We received several nasty comments, dirty looks, and one administrator even tried to kick us out by saying we did not receive permission. However, I had contacted everyone we needed permission from, so we were able to stay, with the dirty glares and comments continuing.
  4. Education is always an opportunity when gathering a testing group of this size. We were able to have a powerpoint with sexual health information playing in the lobby during Pee for Pizza. This was a great education opportunity because people ended up waiting for quite awhile. We also made signs that we posted around the building with facts. At one point, a group of 6 students read that 1 in 4 in has an STI, and they made the realization of how that information should apply to their group, meaning that 1.5 of them should statistically have positive results from their testing. It was great to see the group learning together and being so comfortable with the topics being discusses. The extended hours and free pricing of the event was an opportunity for increased access to the clinic, which proved to be helpful. Semac can use extended hour events like these as opportunities for more outreach and to reach a part of the population that might not normally have access.
  5. Funding is a big threat because the total cost of this event was very expensive. If we wouldn’t have gotten the funding we did, we could not have provided the extras for prizes or food for the event. Although incentives may not be completely necessary, they do help to bring people in. The public opinion of sexual health work is another threat. The people who believe that Semcac does abortions. One complaint that I received from a WSU teacher who is against our program was that “you shouldn’t be giving them free condoms because they shouldn’t need condoms. They shouldn’t be having sex.” This kind of closed-minded ignorance is a huge threat to our ideas. A general stigma against sex education and funding were our biggest threats.
