Task 6
Franchised IP
This is when a company wants to use
characters or something that another
company owns the rights to in their
own game. For the outside company
to be able to use the other company's
things in their game they have to get
permission. The company with the
rights can just give the outside company the use of their things or they can
come to some sort of agreement. For example the Batman games are done
through franchised IP. This is because the company that own the rights to the
Batman games (DC Universe).
Batman Arkham Asylum is an
action/ adventure game were
the combat is button mashing
like Tekken or Mortal Kombat.
The idea of the game is very
simple the Joker has set all of the
criminals free and allowed to
roam the Arkham Asylum and it
is Batman's job to save everybody good in there and catch all of the criminals.
This has been a largely successful game which nobody can dispute. It originally
go popular because it was another Batman game but when it started to get
really popular was when people started playing it because it was a simple
game to play yet it had a unique flavour behind it which nobody had seen
before (or not in a long time). If this game didn't have a well known
superhero's name to it this game could easily been one of those games that
slipped under the radar but instead it is onto its 3rd game and doing very well
in sales. Any game with Batman's name or any superhero will do moderately
well in sales but none will do as well as Batman Arkham Asylum.
Serialised Original IP
This is when it is a completely original idea with no
copyrighted items within the game. There is one
problem when companies release a game that no
one has heard about before or even know what it is
about but that is all part of the mystery. They might
start slower than Franchised IP games but once they
start gathering their own fan base it just grows and
grows. For example the Fable games. These are
originally thought up by one company and they
create all of the features and characters in the game.
The Fable series of games is now a very popular series of games but it has not
always been like that. It started off as a shadow of what it is today. Fable is an
action role playing game like Oblivion or Fallout. The idea of the game unlike
Batman Arkham Asylum is very complex but when you understand the
complex story line of the game you only enjoy it more.
The story of Fable 2 is a medium length free roam game
were the game doesn't constrict the player to do
anything and also ever player to have a different
experience than another. You start off with nothing like
you do in a lot of games but as the game advances you
can likewise advance your character. You can improve
your strength, magic and many more things. As you get
richer from either working or doing quests you can
afford to buy properties and become a landlord but be
careful if you put your taxes too high you will be disliked by many and start
turning into the devil. I could go on but to sum up this is one of the greatest
games out there and deserves it huge fan base that it has today.
