Discus Disease – Preventing diseases by
Quarantining Your Tank
The worst thing that can ever happen is that you purchase new discus fish, put them in the tank
and they infect the entire tank. When you first purchase new discus from the pet store, you
should have a quarantine tank setup for them. They should stay in the new tank for at least one
month and you should observe them for any diseases. You will need a 10-20 gallon tank, filter,
heater and light. You do not want to add any plants or gravel. You want to observe how they
are eating and what color is their feces. Healthy discus fish will start to eat once food is
introduced in the tank or if they don’t eat they should at least acknowledge that the food is there.
Their waste should be black in color. White waste is an indication that they are infected with
parasites or disease. You should also observe them to make sure that they look healthy.
Discus Disease – Preventing diseases by Keeping Clean
Water
2. As stated above, discus fishes are prone to catch disease. It is important that you know how to
properly care for them. Proper care involves clean water, keeping them stress free and disease
free. Discus Fish requires a little more maintenance than some other fish. One of the things that
leads to poor health and disease is unclean water. You have to make sure that you have a filter
and that you change 25% of the tank water a couple times of week. Discus fish are slow eaters
and their food will float to the bottom of the tank. They will look for the food and eat it but most
of the time the food goes uneaten and starts decaying at the bottom of the tank. This causes
bacteria in the tank. To keep the tank clean you will need to vacuum out decaying food and
waste from the bottom of the tank. If you are a beginner, you should start with a bare bottom
tank and have a couple plants for them to hide. It will be easier to keep the tank clean. A more
experienced person will be able to keep the tank clean whether it is full of ornaments or not.
Discus Disease – Preventing diseases by Keeping the right Temperature and pH
Levels
The temperature of the tank should be between 80-84 degrees Fahrenheit and the pH levels
should be between 5.5-7. The optimal pH level for the tank is 6.
