How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The title sequence to “Operation Croak” challenges typical ethnicity stereotypes in the action genre by
placing what would normally be the antagonistic ethnic minority as a protagonist. Juber portrayed Moriarty
who was the main protagonist of the sequence. We wanted to challenge a common stereotype seen in
popular action films such as James Bond and the Die Hard films which represents ethnic minorities as
antagonists. Juber's Bangladeshi ethnicity is represented in a positive light as his assignment is for the
national security of his country. Moriarty represented in our piece as well dressed (see picture), articulate
and being an expert in the assassination profession. We also challenged the national stereotypes in the
action genre by having a French antagonist as opposed to a Russian or German antagonist. Whilst the
foreign contingent remained, we decided that a French character was suitable due to the nationalistic
element of the plot we created (in which De Gaulle wants to cause a modern day Napoleonic war) and the
anti-Franco psycho-graphics we found in our survey.

Our target audience was the 17-24 category as it is this demographic which is often the largest consumer in
action films. We reflected this in the dark theme of the film and the actors were portraying adults.
We filmed most of the footage in a briefing room (to represent the military elements of our piece) and at a
council estate. This may not seem the most appropriate location due to the nature of our piece, we felt the
estate would be more appreciated by our audience and is an example of independent thinking which is
unique to our piece. To make the experience more personal for the audience, many of our shots were close
enough to look like they were from a first person perspective.

Left: Juber portraying Moriarty.
Macs in background represent modern technology and was influenced by our target audience.

Right: Joe portraying De Gaulle. The Blackberry is another representation of modern technology and was used
to represent the youngest years in the demographic of the target audience.

An example of two shots we used to make the audience feel as though they
were in the scene in person
The Survey Result above allowed us to distinguish our target audience. The 18-20 demographic
being the most popular.
