Corporate Social Responsibility
ArcelorMittal South Africa
2
Introduction
ArcelorMittal South Africa continues to be committed to uplifting and improving the quality of life in
the communities in which we operate, with special reference to previously disadvantaged
communities through the investment of time, knowledge and skills.
Our key focus areas are:
Education
Health
Social Upliftment
Leading the CSI strategy is our investment in education.
3
ArcelorMittal South Africa sets up and supports education projects in the communities in which we operate. By
helping to build and expand schools and other educational facilities, our aim is to provide fair access to a good
education, while respecting cultural diversity.
We believe that education is the key to individual and community development: a good education equips
people to carve out a better life for themselves and to contribute to collective social change.
Meetsi- A- Bophelo School
In 2011 ArcelorMittal South Africa scooped the ArcelorMittal Performance Excellence Award (PEA) in
the category of “Environment & Corporate Responsibility” for the work done on the Meetse-a-Bophelo school
in Mamelodi.
The Meetse-a-Bophelo primary school in Mamelodi (Gauteng) constitutes a very important contribution
to community development.
4
Science Centres
ArcelorMittal South Africa continues to give full out support to the Science Centres in Sebokeng and Saldanha
adjacent to our Vanderbijlpark and Saldanha operations respectively. With this support granted, excellent
learner bursars have come out of these centres to attend universities and are now new young employees of
ArcelorMittal South Africa.
A science centre has recently been built in Newcastle in partnership with the department of Education in
Kwa-Zulu Natal.
5
ArcelorMittal supports local learners to develop entrepreneurial skills
ArcelorMittal South Africa prides itself in being the lifeblood of a developing nation. As one of the corporate
leaders in the field of skills development and training, ArcelorMittal South Africa embarked on a relationship
with Junior Achievement South Africa (JASA) aimed at developing youth in the Newcastle area on various life
skills competencies.
ArcelorMittal South Africa has committed R140 000 to JASA which will be used to prepare youths for life
after school by raising their awareness of economic issues, teaching entrepreneurial and life skills, providing
an understanding of the business world and enhancing a sense of personal responsibility through practical
business experience. By contributing to personal growth, this improves the employability and business
capacity of young people.

Hlalunolwazi Primary School in Newcastle gets a face-lift
The school has about 600 learners from Grade R to Grade 6 with two old classrooms and four new ones.
The two classrooms needed some painting inside and out.
The Civil Societies Development Forum approached ArcelorMittal on behalf of the school and requested
assistance with the painting. The Company donated some paint and brushes for the work.
During school holidays, the forum members, Science Centre Manager and SGB members all
volunteered to paint the school. Acknowledgment is also given to one ArcelorMittal contract employee,
Antonia Mabaso (from Xore Labour Brokers) who contributed his time.
Education
 School shoes initiative
ArcelorMittal South Africa donated 250 pairs of school shoes and socks to destitute learners in
the Vaal Triangle area.
7
8
 School uniform donated to Thembelihle boys shelter
ArcelorMittal South Africa donated money for the purchase of school uniforms and stationery for
about 40 boys in primary school and high school. The boys in the picture are currently
completing Grade 12. It is their first time they have owned school blazers which will provide
them with a bit of prestige in Grade 12.
9
 Nurturing orphans of aids for humanity (NOAH) project
ArcelorMittal South Africa is devoted to supporting One Ark in Orange Farm as well as five of the
Ark projects in Newcastle. Approximately 2 164 orphaned and vulnerable children are
supported, including staff members and volunteers.

Education
 Skills development Outreach Programme in Kilbarchan, Newcastle
Five matriculants are benefiting from ArcelorMittal South Africa’s skills development programme.
(Two of the boys are from the Thembelihle Boys Shelter which was renovated by
Newcastle Works employees on Volunteer Day in 2009).
The three girls are from the rural community and were identified by the shelter mother. These
are orphans who are looking after homes and younger siblings and are dependent on
government grants as a source of income. They have completed matric but have no
resources to further their education. This opportunity came as a miracle in their lives.
11
 Sod Turning in Umthatha
ArcelorMittal South Africa in partnership with the Department of Education is set to build a new
school in Eastern Cape. The Nelson Mandela Primary School is one of the schools that were
identified by the Department of Education and ArcelorMittal South Africa.
Education
12
 School uniforms and stationery
ArcelorMittal South Africa donated funds to purchase school uniforms and stationery to 50
vulnerable and orphaned children from 25 schools in the Newcastle area of Madadeni,
Blaauwbosch, Osizweni and Dannhausser.

13
Health
We invest in health facilities to strengthen the local medical infrastructure where we work, as well as
upgrading outdated medical equipment and providing much needed healthcare. Our health projects
focus on adding to local medical infrastructure, creating awareness of health and safety and
providing medical care to communities that are not connected to a healthcare service.
Hands of Hope Emotional Wellness Centre
ArcelorMittal South Africa donated funds to Hands of Hope to establish a vegetable garden for them
to provide food for their patients. In addition to this, a 15 seater kombi was donated to make visiting
patients easier.
Bophelong Support Group
ArcelorMittal South Africa donated funds and provided training to erect vegetable tunnels
to grow vegetables to sustain patients.
Noah Ark
The Madadeni Noah Ark at Qedizaba Primary School received a hydroponic vegetable garden to
produce food for their nutrition programmes.
A second garden was donated to Inqaba ka Noah Ark at Okhalweni Primary School.
14
Health
 AIDSWIZE
Health On Line (HoL) in partnership with ArcelorMittal South Africa has implemented the
AIDSWIZE Healthy Lifestyle project. This project primarily targets the youths aged 15 to 24
years and addresses two priority areas, which is the AIDSWIZE STI, Condom & Pledge and
AIDSWIZE VCT & Positive Living. These two programmes are strategically implemented
immediately after students’ orientation in tertiary institutions in the Amajuba District in
Newcastle.
15
Social Upliftment
ArcelorMittal South Africa continues to invest significant resources to improve our social footprint
by uplifting and empowering the communities surrounding our operations.
Volunteer Week
ArcelorMittal South Africa once again rallied approximately 500 employees from
Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging who volunteered to aid in the building of five houses.
The ArcelorMittal South Africa Foundation handed over another 10 newly built houses
in Orange Farm. The steelmaker’s 600 local employees were joined by 11 international colleagues
from countries as varied as Macedonia, Ukraine, France, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Poland and the
Czech Republic in a week long project to build the houses.
Through the Volunteer Programme, ArcelorMittal South Africa has managed to build 36
houses in Orange Farm since 2009.
