Today’s IT challenges when it comes to the enterprise: Energy Efficiency: inefficient data centers and computing environments. Management: supporting corporate machines and assets day-to-day. Security: assuring data and machine security independent of location. Compliance:ensuring that machines are compliant with corporate and regulatory requirements. Access/Changing Workforce:providing users “anytime, anywhere” access to data and applications. Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity:ensuring continuity in the event of machine loss, disaster, or workforce interruption.

Desktop Virtualization The future of the desktop! 11
Client-side virtualization consists of two broad sets of technologies Desktop virtualization Application virtualization Local desktop virtualization Local application virtualization Hosted desktop virtualization Hosted application virtualization
Definition: desktop virtualization ,[object Object],[object Object]
Definition: Application Virtualization ,[object Object]
Hosted application virtualization is a new term for legacy server-based computing.,[object Object]
Agenda What is “server virtualization”? What is “client virtualization”? Different users require different technologies. What is a “Green PC”? Strengths (and weaknesses) of client virtualization Recommendations
Today's users fall into three basic categories: Task-Based Workers Limited apps and limited performance requirements Easiest for IT to manage — require limited customization Knowledge Workers Standard office apps and medium performance requirements Harder for IT to manage — app conflicts are commonplace Power Users Compute-intensive apps and high-performance requirements Hardest for IT to manage — require full control of their PCs
Additional attributes to consider when thinking about your users Mobile Users who are away from their desks more than 30% of the time Typically have limited or no Internet connectivity Remote Employees who generally work at home or in a branch office Typically have persistent Internet connection; however, connection speed and quality are not guaranteed Third Party Workers who are “untrusted” or “unmanaged” and don’t use a corporate PC Machines are not provisioned by the hiring organization and can't be controlled by IT
Scenario-Based Computing: Finding The Right Virtualization Model For Your Users
Case study: Large Hotel Chain Problem: In front desk operations, reservations and check-ins are essential (minutes can mean millions of dollars). It needs to streamline the process of application delivery. It needs a solution that can scale to 300,000 desktops worldwide. The benefits of virtualizing applications are: Cutting the time it takes to package applications in half Decreasing testing times Decreasing support costs
Case study: Federal Government Problem: The government agency must support a large mobile workforce. It must protect data that is vital to national security. The agency is responsible for supporting 250,000 devices in several locations. The benefits of virtualizing applications are: Centralizing the agency’s most valuable data so that it doesn’t live out on the user devices Helping with Windows 7 migration Increasing productivity by delivering applications to users, regardless of location
Case study: Major University Problem: Universities run computer labs, which are subject to a large body of students and faculty. Every year requires a software/hardware refresh. It needs to streamline the process of application delivery. Increase security, flexibility, and reliability. It needs a solution that can scale to 150,000 desktops campuswide. The benefits of virtualizing applications are: Cutting the time it takes to package applications in half. Decreasing testing times. Decreasing support costs. Increasing security, flexibility, and reliability.
Case study: Healthcare Company Problem: It is a highly regulated industry — must increase compliance. It has 5,300 users that need anywhere access to sensitive data. It needs to streamline its management of the PC environment. The benefits of virtualizing desktops are: Lowering support costs — no longer sending technicians for desk visits Reducing provisioning time Centralizing data — HIPAA data no longer on endpoints Decreasing power consumption by 72% — thanks to thin clients

Editor's Notes

  1. With energy costs associated with data centers and computing environments, coupled with management costs, IT faces multiple challenges. Not to mention they must stay secure, meet compliance and regulations, deal with an ever-changing workforce, and Business Continuity. Business Continuity in the event of an unforeseen disaster.
  2. Our agenda today is to discuss:Server virtualizationDesktop VirtualizationAnd the Green PCWe will dive deeper into desktop virtualization to discuss scenarios, strategies, and recommendations.
  3. So what about Server Virtualization?
  4. It’s not a question of will you use virtualization as a strategy, but when.
  5. Historically, organizations have one server and one application residing together. This is inefficient because most servers only use 10% of their capabilities. That’s like driving a Porsche 10 miles an hour. Imagine using 60 to 80% of the servers capabilities and having multiple applications residing on that same physcial server. Virtualization creates virtual machines which work alone within the hardware environment. If one goes down, the others keep working. Imagine being able to reduce your servers down to 10%. If you have 1000 servers, you can reduce them down to 100 servers. If you have a 10,000 servers, you can reduce it down to 1,000 servers.
  6. Virtualization has many virtues, including: data center optimizationConsolidating servers down to 15-20%Quick ROI within 6-12 monthsReduction of power & cooling by 50%Reduction of Carbon FootprintReduction in Real Estate spaceIn the DC metro area we have the highest prices for data center space.
  7. Here we have a calculation of 100 servers in using virtualization. We have a savings of $2.5 million dollars, that means they wasted $2.5M dollars the previous years they were not utilizing virtualization. We have an energy savings of 247,000 KwhsThat is equivalent to 8555 trees planted and 13 cars off the roadWhat would your environment look like with a 66% decrease in cost and energy consumption.Visualize a row of ten racks being consolidated down to 1 or 2 racks. That’s the power of virtualization.
  8. What’s next?
  9. On my personal laptop and PC, I like the power I have with my hard drive and memory. I have total freedom. I do not want anyone to have access to my hard drive, but when it comes to running business I disagree. Businesses have customer data and proprietary information running on systems. My receptionist does not need an 150GB HD so she can download 1000 songs from iTunes.
  10. For the desktop environment, there are four ways we can go with desktop virtualization.Desktop VirtualizationLocal Desktop VirtualizationHosted Desktop VirtualizationApplication VirtualizationLocal Application VirtualizationHosted Application Virtualization
  11. Desktop virtualization:A computing environment consisting of an operating system, applications, and associated data that is abstracted from the user’s PC.Laymen’s terms: everything resides on the PC!
  12. Here we have a diagram of Desktop Virtualization Local & Hosted. On the left we can see Local Desktop Virtualization where everything resides on the PC locallyOn the right we see the Hosted Desktop Virtualization utilizing PCs and/or thin clients.
  13. Application Virtualization:An application that is abstracted from the user’s OS and runs in isolation from other applicationsHosted application virtualization is a new term for legacy server-based computing.
  14. Here we have a diagram of Application Virtualization Local & Hosted. On the left we can see Local Desktop Virtualization where everything resides on the PC locallyOn the right we see the Hosted Desktop Virtualization utilizing PCs and/or thin clients.
  15. Different users require different technologies.
  16. Today’s users fall into 3 basic categoriesTask-Based WorkersLimited apps and limited performance requirementsEasiest for IT to manage — require limited customizationKnowledge WorkersStandard office apps and medium performance requirementsHarder for IT to manage — app conflicts are commonplacePower UsersCompute-intensive apps and high-performance requirementsHardest for IT to manage — require full control of their PCs
  17. Are your users mobile, remote, or just contractors not associated with your company? These are more things you must consider when establishing the best desktop virtualization strategy.
  18. Here is an excellent chart to figure out which direction to go when establishing a virtualization strategy for the client user. I will be furnishing a copy of the presentation for your perusal. If you follow it from left to right, you will see where you can start with:Task-Based UserKnowledge WorkerPower User
  19. Case study: Large Hotel ChainHere we have a large hotel chainProblem:In front desk operations, reservations and check-ins are essential (minutes can mean millions of dollars). It needs to streamline the process of application delivery. It needs a solution that can scale to 300,000 desktops worldwide. The benefits of virtualizing applications are:Cutting the time it takes to package applications in half Decreasing testing times Decreasing support costs
  20. Case study: Federal GovernmentProblem:The government agency must support a large mobile workforce. It must protect data that is vital to national security. The agency is responsible for supporting 250,000 devices in several locations. The benefits of virtualizing applications are:Centralizing the agency’s most valuable data so that it doesn’t live out on the user devices Helping with Windows 7 migration Increasing productivity by delivering applications to users, regardless of location
  21. Case study: Major UniversityOne thing is truw about college students, is that you never know what you’ll find on PCs after they use them. Configuration management is paramount. They can upload music, video, malware, and virus’. Desktop Virtualization can help with these issues.Problem:Universities run computer labs, which are subject to a large body of students and faculty. Every year requires a software/hardware refresh. It needs to streamline the process of application delivery.Increase security, flexibility, and reliability. It needs a solution that can scale to 150,000 desktops campuswide. The benefits of virtualizing applications are:Cutting the time it takes to package applications in half.Decreasing testing times.Decreasing support costs.Increasing security, flexibility, and reliability.
  22. Case study: Healthcare CompanyI use to be a Navy Corpsman and I worked on the CHCS system which is currently being usedProblem:It is a highly regulated industry — must increase compliance. It has 5,300 users that need anywhere access to sensitive data.It needs to streamline its management of the PC environment. The benefits of virtualizing desktops are:Lowering support costs — no longer sending technicians for desk visitsReducing provisioning timeCentralizing data — HIPAA data no longer on endpoints Decreasing power consumption by 72% — thanks to thin clients
  23. Strengths (and weaknesses) of desktop virtualization
  24. Strengths of client virtualizationLocal desktop virtualization Turns unmanaged users into managed users No need to provision full PCs to contractors Native backup and recoveryHosted desktop virtualization Centralized data Reduced management burden Simple patch management The user experience doesn’t change. Native backup and recoveryLocal application virtualizationReduces regression testing for applications Supports legacy and new applications together Resolves application conflict issues Reduces application management costs Better license managementHosted application virtualization Centralized data Reduced application management burden Removes application incompatibilities Performance-intensive applications won’t affect PCs.
  25.
