1. Top 10 Fitness Myths
It's easy to fall into the trap: A workout buddy passes along an exercise tip, and then you pass it on
to several people you know.
In the world of fitness, myths and half-truths abound and some of them are just harmless half-
truths, but many others can actually be harmful.
Some fitness myths need to be busted, and the sooner the better to help put you and your family on
the path to a healthier, safer, and more enjoyable workout.
Myth 1: I don’t need to exercise if I am not fat
Fact: Fitness is about cardiovascular system efficiency, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility
and ideal body composition. Hence carrying excess body fat is only one aspect of fitness. Whether
you are fat or thin you have to workout to cause an increase in all the above-slated components of
fitness.
Myth 2: If I want to lose fat quickly I should do a lot of cardio
Fact: The worst thing you can do for fat loss is excessive cardio. It is surefire method of stripping of
your lean body mass and lower the speed at which body burns calories internally. Hence strike a
balance between your weight training and cardio workouts to lose fat effectively.
Myth 3: Even after doing so many crunches for my abs my stomach doesn’t budge
Fact: Abdomen accumulates fat because the body has slowed down internally. It is just a site for fat
deposition and has very little to do with the abdominal muscles. The overall combination of exercise
and a balanced diet will speed up body’s metabolism and get the fat off the abdomen. Hence do abs
not to burn fat on your waist but to strengthen the abdominal muscles as there is nothing like spot
reduction.
Myth 4: The more I exercise the better the outcome
Fact: Excess of anything is harmful and so is exercise! To a certain extent, one may benefit by
overtraining. But the same potentially increases your chances of getting injured fitness levels. The
ideal here again would be 3 days of weights and 3 days of cardio. One day a week of complete rest is
as important as doing your workouts regularly.
Myth 5: Yoga is the safest workout
Yoga is a vast term and it includes various exercises and postures. Some of the exercises are vigorous
and physically demanding. Failing to adhere to the right practices may give rise to many problems.
One must be well aware of what to do and what not, because some of the postures in yoga can
aggravate problems like back pain, cervical spondylitis, knee pain etc. You should abide by the
instructions of a qualified instructor to facilitate safe workouts.
2. Myth 6: If I am not working up a sweat, probably am not working hard enough
Fact: "Sweating is not necessarily an indicator of exertion. Sweating is your body’s way of cooling
itself." It's possible to burn a significant number of calories without breaking a sweat:.
Myth 7: Steam and sauna will help me lose weight
Fact: These are just relaxation aids that have beneficial effects on health such as improved
circulation, cleansing of the skin and combating nasal congestion. The body does not lose fat, there
is temporary weight loss due to dehydration and the water lost through sweating must be replaced
immediately. Remember dehydration is a killer. Please do not use steam and sauna as weight loss
aids.
Myth 8: When it comes to working out, I must feel some pain to gain benefits
Fact: Pain is a warning sign that indicates any potential harm to the body. You should not feel any
type of pain during or after exercise. If you feel pain, it means you are on the wrong track. One must
be able to differentiate between pain and discomfort. When you begin a new exercise, an initial mild
discomfort is normal and it is due to muscle soreness (DOMS).
Don't force your body to continue with a workout if you perceive any kind of pain. Remember, if
there is pain there will be no gain.
Myth 9: Weight training will make me look unfeminine
Fact: Women cannot get big and bulky for one very good reason…their bodies don’t produce enough
testosterone to build the large bulky muscles. Testosterone is a key ingredient to putting on muscle
mass, and the only way women can get this type of big bulky look is by taking steroids. Lifting heavy
will make a woman strong and more toned, not manly.
Myth 10: Age is a constraint
Fact: Many old people feel that it's too late to start with exercise. But they can safely participate in
exercise programs. With regular exercise, one can lead an independent and healthy life. Along with
that, there is a generalized sense of wellbeing and improved quality of life. In case you have any
health-related problem, consult your physician. It is never too late to join a fitness program.
Although people have become more aware about fitness, misconceptions still keep them from
exercising. There is no point in believing things, which are untrue and ineffective because with belief
come various expectations.
