Medical Imaging Market
▌ MEDICAL IMAGING IS ~ €22-25B LARGE ▌ MATURE COUNTRIES ACCOUNT FOR ~80%
GROWTH IS ~ 1.5% PER YEAR

X-ray Imagery
Principle : measurement of X‐rays attenuation by
tissues (20‐150keV)
Compatible with bones, calcifications, vascular /
digestive / urinary tractus (contrast agents)). Limited
contrast with soft tissues.
Used in diagnosis (mostly 1st intention) and in
interventional.
High resolution (0,1mm), 2D and 3D
Real time (up to 100fps), potentially portable.
Low to medium cost (0,1‐0,5M€ equipment, excepted
for high end rooms (1‐2M€)
High volumes (approx. 80,000 new equipment per
year, 50+% in radiography)
Ionizing

Screening and diagnosis
▌ Imaging equipment
the acquisition end of an IT system called PACS (Picture
Archiving & Communication System), using a
communication protocol called DICOM. In most cases,
diagnosis is done on post‐processed images retrieved
from the PACS server.
▌ Two families of systems :
Screening systems (chest radiography, mammography,
liver, thyroid, pregnancy…) are low cost systems, usually
X‐ray or US.
Diagnosis systems are second intention modalities or
emergency rooms systems : X‐ray (orthopedics,
gastrointestinal), Doppler (US), MR, CT and NM.

Interventional radiology & surgery
▌ Many interventional procedure are done under
X‐ray imaging control : orthopedics (spine, …),
angiography (aneurisms, …), cardiology
(electrophysiology, angioplasty), neurology, urology,
etc.
▌ Two families of systems :
Low end (orthopedics, angiography, emergency rooms)
are low cost systems, usually mobile.
High end are dedicated to delicate and long
interventions on the vascular & cardiac system (aneurism
repair, electrophysiology, valve replacement,
angioplasty…) : “cath‐lab” and hybrid rooms.
