IDEAS WORTH
SPREADING

TED TED is a nonprofit organization devoted
to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a
four-day conference in California 25 years
ago, TED has grown to support those world-
              changing ideas with multiple initiatives.
The annual TED Conference invites the
world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak
for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made
available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers
have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane
              Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard
              Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck,
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK
Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual
TED Conference takes place in Long Beach,
              California, with simulcast in Palm Springs;
TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford,
UK. TED’s media initiatives include TED.
com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily,
and the Open Translation Project, which
              provides subtitles and interactive transcripts
as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be
              translated by volunteers worldwide. TED
has established the annual TED Prize,
where exceptional individuals with a wish to
change the world are given the opportunity
to put their wishes into action; TEDx,
which offers individuals or groups a way to
       organize local, independent TED-like events
around the world; and the TEDFellows
       program, helping world-changing innovators
from around the globe to become part of the
TED community and, with its help, amplify
the impact of their remarkable projects and
activities. Follow TED on Twitter at twitter.
com/TEDTalks, or on Facebook at facebook.
       com/TED.

TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx
is a program of local, self-organized events
that bring people together to share a TED-
like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks
video and live speakers combine to spark
deep discussion and connection in a small
       group. These local, self-organized events
are branded TEDx, where x = independently
organized TED event. The TED Conference
provides general guidance for the TEDx
program, but individual TEDx events are
self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and
       regulations.)

Thank You Thank you. For being a creator. A catalyst.
An entrepreneur. An artist. A technologist. A
designer. A scientist. A thinker. A doer. But
more than anything, thank you for doing this
                   in Cleveland.

Community TEDxCLE was created to bring all of you
together. So that we can share our ideas to

                   to share Cleveland innovation, development
and positive change with the world. To

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading and in honor of TED, we share
one of our favorite TEDTalks from TED2011. If you would like to view
this video after TEDxCLE, please visit TEDxCLE.com/talks

About this talk: MIT researcher Deb Roy wanted to understand
how his infant son learned language, so he wired up his house with
videocameras to catch every moment (with exceptions) of his son’s life,
then parsed 90,000 hours of home video to watch “gaaaa” slowly turn
into “water.” Astonishing, data-rich research with deep implications for
how we learn.

About Deb Roy: Deb Roy studies how children learn language, and
designs machines that learn to communicate in human-like ways. On
sabbatical from MIT Media Lab, he’s working with the AI company
Bluefin Labs.

(E Prep) a grade 6-8 Ohio community school (aka “charter school”)

and a “no excuses” attitude toward proving that all children can learn
and advance to college.

Party Serious: Building Community in Cleveland Through the Arts
#valeriemayen

Valerie Mayen is the founder of Yellowcake – a Cleveland-based
women’s clothing line known for bold and modern coats, fabulously
versatile accessories and brilliantly sewn couture. Though a native
Texan, Mayen arrived in Cleveland a decade ago, taking up study
at both The Cleveland Institute of Art and Virginia Marti College of
Art and Design. Mayen appeared as a contestant on Season 8 of
Project Runway. She states: “I did the show not just for the months
of exposure [it provided] for Yellowcake, but for my family, friends
and interns that have believed in me and supported me each step of
the way. I also did it for Cleveland! I want people to see the potential
and talent this city has. The show [gave] me a platform to prove it to
the whole country, every Thursday night for four months!” Since its
inception, 5% of Yellowcake’s profits from all sales have benefited a
non-profit organization geared toward relieving hunger, homelessness,
and poverty. Valerie is currently launching a fashion design and sewing
incubator called Buzz Growl that aims to revolutionize Cleveland’s
fashion industry.

Chris Clark
Electricity as a Basic Right
#chrisclark

Chris Clark graduated from Miami University’s Farmer School
of Business in 2008 where he majored in management and
entrepreneurship. Much to his professors’ surprise 6 months later
he started Sunflower Solutions where he developed the world’s first
manual solar tracking technologies that provides up to 40% more
power versus traditional roof-mounted solar and are used to power
critical functions such as clean water projects, education, health
care and economic development in developing regions of the world.
Working with Shaker Launch House Chris was able to grow Sunflower
Solutions to provide solar solutions in countries such as Kenya, Togo,
Nigeria, Rwanda, India and in the United States.

Seizing the global opportunity to provide solar technology, Chris has
started two joint ventures around the world that deploy his new solar
technology.

TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. TED’s media initiatives include TED. com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity

Follow TED on Twitter at twitter. com/TEDTalks, or on Facebook at facebook. com/TED. TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED- like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.) 14

If you would like to view this video after TEDxCLE, please visit TEDxCLE.com/talks About this talk: MIT researcher Deb Roy wanted to understand how his infant son learned language, so he wired up his house with videocameras to catch every moment (with exceptions) of his son’s life, then parsed 90,000 hours of home video to watch “gaaaa” slowly turn into “water.” Astonishing, data-rich research with deep implications for how we learn. About Deb Roy: Deb Roy studies how children learn language, and designs machines that learn to communicate in human-like ways.
