37. Chapter 4 Quote
If a man is called to be a
street sweeper, he should
sweep streets even as
Michelangelo painted, or
Beethoven composed
music, or Shakespeare
wrote poetry. He should
sweep streets so well that
all the hosts of heaven
and earth will pause to
say, here lived a great
street sweeper who did
his job Martin
well. Luther King, Jr.
38. Chapter 4 of my book would use

If your actions
inspire others to
dream more, learn

OCSOA Executive Assistant conference – May 31/June 1 2012 Niagara Falls Ontario The key to leadership is not in a book, not in a video, it is in believing that you can make a difference The key to leadership is in each of You Now, its Thursday morning, and some of you may have enjoyed the sights and sounds of Niagara Falls last night, so lets start by circulating that coffee through your bodies Everyone stand Now place your arms straight out in front of you palms facing the ground, rotate your hands inward so that your thumbs are facing upward Now 3 times, quickly bring your hands almost together with your arms outstretched but don’t let them touch – 3 times quickly Now repeat this 5 times quickly but let your hands come together loudly, and after the fifth time sit down quickly Great, now the coffee has circulated and the caffeine should keep you awake for my presentation, and… and when my two teenage daughters ask me how the presentation went, I can tell them that it started off with a standing ovation
There are 4 main learning goals for this presentation I hope that by the end of the morning session you are clear that there is a difference between positional leadership and true leadership You should be able to articulate several qualities that you feel leaders have You should be able to recognize that in each of you is the choice to take on a leadership role And finally, I hope that you will each remember a minimum of 1 quotation that you can reflect upon over the next two days
There are many authors who have written about leadership – what is important is not their lists, ie. 7 habits of Covey, or 6 secrets of Fullan, but the action that their message inspires you to act on We will spend the next hour reading the pages from each of these popular leadership books - Just kidding – the coffee started to perculate in you when I said that, didn’t it
OK – how about instead of reading lecture notes from business texts, we do some activity – hot yoga anyone? - No, ok, I’ll try another activity
Alright, so now I found something that we may have lots of interest in, but it will have to wait
OK – everyone standing again, you don’t have show as much energy as these 4, but lets start by standing
You can Sit Down if you can answer yes to this question Have you ever wanted to kill your boss? Have a look at whose sitting down, and if you’re rooming with them, I suggest you keep the bathroom light on tonight!
OK – most of you are still standing You can sit down, if maybe you haven’t considered killing your boss, but you have considered inflicting some minor pain on them, maybe just a broken arm or a broken leg, or inflicting some mental anguish on them
OK – we still have a few people standing Please have a seat if you agree that your director, or superintendent, or manager, would be considered in your Board to have positional power - OK, for anyone left standing, there are no prizes for the last person standing, so go ahead and have a seat!
In the introductions it was mentioned that one of my responsibilities is for learning and technology Along with that portfolio comes specialized equipment to make cool things, like master room keys for hotels - what – why are you looking worried?
Based on the answers to your previous questions, its clear that most if not all of you like your bosses - I use the word “boss” loosely, since in most Boards there is a supervisory responsibility but collegiality is equally important
Forgive me For the upcoming tribute to several Directors
Now, back to that master hotel keycard While many of you were out last night enjoying the sights and sounds of the Falls, I checked out several of your rooms to see what “artifacts” I might find in your rooms – related to Leadership of course - Well, look what I found in the Niagara Catholic room!
I found one of your members travels with a lovely framed photo of their newly appointed director,Jodi DiRocco – Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic Very appropriate for a Catholic organization, I found one of you travels with a special prayer card of your director, Bill Gartland – Eastern Ontario Catholic
Back to that gang from Niagara Catholic – a lovely framed photo of their Director John Crocco – Niagara Catholic Now when you look at that photo, if you’re like me, you think, Bond…James (click to reveal photo of Sean Connery) and note the resemblance And in another room, I found a lovely movie poster on the wall, featuring Catherine McCullough – Director of Sudbury Catholic
My hunt for leadership artificats continued and I cam across a complete photo album with photos of John Kostoff – Director of Dufferin Peel Catholic In another room I found a creative person amongst you who was creating a CD Cover for songs by their favourite artist, Brian Beal – Director of Education Simcoe Muscoka
Now the next room, was someone I know quite well, and they had brought with them, their favourite calendar featuring pin-up boy Julian Hanlon – Director of Ottawa Catholic School Board The next room was a little scary since I wasn’t sure if they were planning on killing their boss - Bruce Rodrigues – Toronto Catholic – chopped up photos of Bruce were strewn across the bed
I quickly left that room, and found a lovely collection of magazines including one that featured Director Greg Reeves – PVNC (I noticed they didn’t try to use the full name of the Board as it wouldn’t fit on the cover) The next room one of your members was working on their stamp collection featuring, Paul Wubben – St. Clair Catholic
Some more disturbing treasures, an all access pass for Director John Stadnyk – Huron Superior Catholic And yet someone else who had a lot of time on their hands and was working on a puzzle of their director, Michele Arbour – Renfrew Catholic You’re probably getting worried that I’m going to cover all of the Directors, but as with most technology, my magic keypass crashed, so I couldn’t get to any more rooms, but I have submitted a help desk ticket
Clearly based on what I found in your rooms, your bosses have positional leadership roles, but they also have leadership skills But, not everyone outside of education likes their bosses and some don’t think their bosses are good leaders
If you look on Amazon or Chapters, you’ll find lots of books on leadership and bosses Look at some of these titles, Superstar Leadership model- Good boss, bad boss, which one are you Recycle your boss – 99 ways to put a bad boss to good use
101 ways to kill your boss Bad bosses, crazy coworkers, and other office idiots
Dealing with the Boss from hell – the guide to life in the trenches Good Boss – Bad Boss – How to be the Best and learn from the Worst
How to work for an Idiot – survive and thrive without killing your boss Good Bosses Gone Bad – How to survive the workplace when your Boss Sucks!
A survival Guide for Working with Bad Bosses – Dealing with Bullies, Idiots, Back-Stabbers and Other Managers from Hell I hate my Boss – How to survive and get ahead when your boss is a Tyrant, Control Freak, or just plain Nuts
And just to show that the distinction between positional power and leadership is not confined to print media, there are many websites like this one: My Boss is an Idiot. Com – Tell Them About It I contrast this with the lovely OCSOA bar on the left – A faith-centered community of learners called to serve and shape the future of Catholic Education
And another website – My Stupid Boss.com – let off some steam at My Stupid Boss.com - Stories about bad bosses – I had to crop this one because of the language used in some of the stories
Your turn, but I’m only giving you one minute so talk fast – Who do you think of when you think of a leader Share some of the examples
Table discussion – Who do you think of when you think of a leader Share some of the examples
Table discussion – many people probably came up with political leaders, religious leaders, and people in formal positions of power – but other examples included personal examples of leaders.
So based on some of the examples we’ve just heard – where do you fit into the leadership picture –When it comes to leadership, what’s your role?
The importance of leadership in our Catholic School Boards You are the leaders – you are the ones that make a difference - You each have Directors, or Managers, or Superintendents who are leaders based on position but their personal attributes are what make them an effective / outstanding leader - we have teachers, custodians, EAs, students, administrators, office administrators and each of these defines a position but not necessarily a leadership position – but each of these can be a leader, and each of you can make a difference in the life of a colleague, the life of a parent or in the life of a student
So if I were to write a book on leadership, I would call it: You Don’t Need a Title to be a Leader… but if you have a title, it doesn’t mean you’re a leader! But – it’s too late, the book’s already been written Click to show – You Don’t need a title to be a leader And The Leader who had no Title

Chapter 4 begins with this quote from Martin Luther King Jr. Add – but to me this doesn’t capture true leadership – this captures pride and excellence in ones work, regardless of what the work is
In my book, my chapter 4 would use this quote (read quote) It is about action and service to others that I believe makes each of us a true leader
In my book, my chapter 4 would use this quote (read quote) It is about action and service to others that I believe makes each of us a true leader
So the question that comes is – Are you in it alone as a leader?
We’ve certainly seen great examples of what one person can do This is a great quote – if you focus on one person at a time,- you are answering God’s calling to be a leader in the Catholic school system
Don’t try and be someone else It is important to have others in your network or circle of influence that are not the same as you – this way you avoid groupthink and you can take into account different points of view and perspectives
Tell Story of principal who influenced me in my first year of teaching Gr. 12 Entrepreneurship, I had some real tough students in that class I couldn’t wait to be finished the semester so that I wouldn’t have to deal with that class And then at a staff meeting, our principal told us the story of the starfish, and he gave us each a pin, a pin of a starfish The message I learned 21 years ago, was that I could make a difference in the life of one student, one student at a time - And I go to know some of these tough students, and I began to learn about their troubles and challenges, about fathers in jail, about no money for rent, about going home to an empty home, and I realized that the lives that some of my students were living were nothing like the life that I had grown up in, and I was determined to make a difference in their life - And the pin I’m wearing today, is from that meeting, 21 years ago, and I’ve kept it as a reminder, that I can always make the difference in the life of one other person - This video and song is based on that story
Now, what’s different about leadership in the 21 st Century is that it is about social networking, it is about being able to influence others and learn from others through technology and tools, and increasing your circle of influence
Leadership at its most basic and important level is about relationships
Let’s have a look at this boss and his ability to lead and serve others
And a quick video from a FedEx commercial
Your turn, but I’m only giving you one minute so talk fast – Who do you think of when you think of a leader Share some of the examples
Table discussion – Who do you think of when you think of a leader Share some of the examples
Lets have a look at this video on qualities of leadership and watch for matches with what you discussed at your table
Our Friend the Nightmare boss – what has he learned from the presentation?
Beware Information Overload when you introduce new tools and strategies
Explain Professional Learning network and how the tools can save time and increase efficiencies
Finish with these quotes – hopefully they speak to you Remember – in your call to Catholic leadership – remember the star fish – you do make a difference in the life of “one”
