6. SUTA prepares students for Algebra I
What is it? Summer intervention program to prepare students for Algebra
Why? • Gatekeeper to college-prep math classes
• To be competitive in college apps, students must complete Algebra
I in grade 8 in order to reach Calculus by grade 12
Who is it for? Incoming 8th graders who tested at the Basic level on CST’s, took
pre-algebra in 7th grade, but not recommended for Algebra in 8th or is
going into Algebra with red flags
What does • 75 hours delivered over 4 weeks (equivalent to 1 semester)
it provide? • Common Core State Standards aligned instruction from
credentialed teacher and college-level teaching assistant,
• Web-based practice tools & educational games,
• College Night for parents and students, and
• A field trip to San Jose State, Santa Clara, or Stanford
• Realignment of student trajectories

In the realm of Advocacy, we write policy briefs, hold education forums such as this one, and have key initiatives focused on STEM Education, A-G Curriculum, Equity and Access, and Placement.Stepping Up To Algebra is a four week summer program followed by Saturdays during the academic year to ensure that students are prepared to successfully complete Algebra I by the end of 8th grade.Stepping Up To Science is a summer program which prepares students for their first freshman year A-G science.Mathpower[ed], which just completed it’s first year, is an acceleration program for students in grades 4-6.For innovation, we facilitate a professional learning community for teachers called the integrated STEM teacher corps, providing an environment for teachers to collaborate on innovative ways of teaching. We encourage innovative lesson plans shared on our open education resource site Lessonopoly. Our new site STEMpower[ed], our one-stop shop for STEM resources in Silicon Valley.
Purpose: Reinforce algebra concepts to keep SUTA students on track to succeed. Strategy: In partnership with the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley, we are providing 3 hours of Algebra programming, two Saturday’s per month. Program integrates the Noyce Foundation’s “Problems of the Month” and Khan Academy and is aligned with the school year’s pacing guide.Teachers lead the classroom with the help of a teaching assistant and volunteers. All 15 districts participating in the summer program have launched at least one classroomAverage 25 students per class
This is the ecosystem around the student. We work on all these levels to impact student achievement. To do this, we need Funding, Access, Content, Resources, Research and Evaluation, and Awareness. We are a 20 person organizationAs Tim Ritchie, the Tech Museum President, said yesterday, we try to partner with other organizations as much as possible. But we cannot do it alone. *Access to what?
We rely heavily on cross sector partnerships to be successful. Each sector brings a form of wealth, wisdom, or work to helping us prepare more students for college and careers.
We are now going highlight some of our cross-sector partnerships that help us promote more STEMcapable students
We love partnerships. Partnerships give us an opportunity to do more with what we already have. The challenge is when an opportunity comes that is not closely aligned with what we do. It becomes difficult to turn down opportunities when we know we can be impacting education in some way. But, we always have to keep in mind the resources we have. Is this going to help us meet our mission and objectives?
Dell Wyse loaned us desktop thin clients for our summer programs. They wanted to expand into education. They were great, except they didn’t have monitors. We had to solicit monitor donations from different companies.
We need to be sensitive to other people’s goals and objectives and find ways to work together toward common goals instead or they may feel threatened by what you’re trying to accomplish.School districts
