A 74,000-square-foot warehouse and public market facility at Towne Center in
Virginia Beach suffered heavy fire damage. The fire occurred in a space occupied
by a government contractor that stores and provides sensitive computer and
electronic hardware to the military.
Rolyn personnel immediately provided emergency board up to protect the facility
and contents from further damage and breach of security. Two trailer-mounted
desiccant dehumidifiers were brought in to dry the entire facility. Several Rolyn
teams carefully removed vinyl covered sheetrock walls damaged by water and
smoke, clearing the way for the insurance cause and origin investigation to begin.
Rolyn worked closely with the property owner’s insurance company and engineers
over a three-week period to shore up the building and eliminate life safety issues.
Power generators, lights, and equipment were provided to assist the insurance
evaluation. Storage racks and other unstable internal structures were carefully
dismantled and removed. The intensity of the heat melted steel beams and roof
panels. Rolyn erected girders and I-beams to make the structure sound. A series
of 1’ x 1’ holes were cut into the sagging roof to drain water which had pooled,
creating dangerous excess weight.
The last phase of recovery entailed removing completely damaged sections of the roof and I-beams according to the plans of the insurance
company’s engineer. Rolyn brought in a 380-ton mobile crane, one of the largest of its kind on the east coast, to remove a 6,500-square-foot
section of damaged roof and the twisted I-beams underneath. Within a 36-hour period, large sections of the building were removed, cut,
and hauled off site.
Rolyn provided 24-hour security to protect the highly sensitive, top-secret contents of the building. Continuous power was also provided to
tenants in minimally damaged portions of the building, allowing them to continue business as usual.
Rolyn’s quick response, detailed inventorying of equipment, and technical experience allowed the building to remain safe and secure
throughout the recovery. Rolyn mitigated additional financial loss for the client by providing all the assistance the insurance company
required to complete the investigation and start the reconstruction process as quickly as possible.

In late January, the Coast Guard performed a routine inspection of a
shipping vessel transporting produce for sale. After the inspection, the
Coast Guard gave a long list of cleaning and maintenance issues to be
addressed before the ship was allowed to leave port. The main engine,
pipes, and generators were all leaking oil, causing a fire hazard. The
ship was placed under detention, and the Coast Guard’s re-inspection
was set for just a couple days later.
The owner of the ship needed immediate action, as every minute of delay
was resulting in lost revenue. The ship was emptied of its inventory and
as long as it was detained, it could not sail to pick up more produce.
Furthermore, the entire time the ship spent in port, fuel was being burned
running the generators to keep the ship “alive.” Crew members still had
to be paid, even though the ship was not making any money.
The site manager called Rolyn, and we were on site within the hour.
Shortly thereafter technicians had begun cleaning. Oil was leaking
primarily into the engine compartment, a room that spanned five stories
of the ship. Rolyn degreased and cleaned all surfaces of the compartment, including the bulkheads, walking planks, and
handrails. Rolyn workers also had to get underneath the engine, into the bilge, to clean. Oil is this location was up to an inch
deep.
Some pipes were cracked and needed to be replaced. The pipes were as big as basketballs, and a ten-foot section of piping
required seven workers just to pick it up and move it. These pipes ran through the ship, carrying water, sewage, and coolant.
Rolyn also repaired hand rails and took care of some other safety measures for the ship.
Crews worked around the clock for the entire weekend in order to meet the short deadline for the Coast Guard re-inspection.
The ship passed its next inspection, and since that time, Rolyn has cleaned several other shipping vessels for the company,
allowing them to get back to business as soon as possible.

A microelectronics manufacturing plant sustained massive fire damage. The
fire started in the chemical plating area of the factory and smoke soon filled
the entire 57,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. The damage, extensive
due to the release of corrosive chlorides and hazardous chemicals such as
cyanide, brought plant operations to a complete shutdown.
It was vital for the facility to continue its business operations since a large
portion of their work was U.S. Military related. The facility’s chips were also
used in implantable medical devices such as pacemakers. Rolyn began work
by securing the building in order to protect the employees during the clean up
process. Containment barriers were constructed on site in order to separate
the facility’s office areas from the affected plant operations area. Through the
use of air filtration systems, Rolyn created a positive/negative air exchange to
prevent cross-contamination between the divided areas.
As soon as barriers were erected and the property was stabilized, Rolyn began
to decontaminate the affected area. Simultaneously, Rolyn converted the
office area into a temporary first class computer chip manufacturing facility
with 100 ppm clean rooms, water cooled lasers, chemical fire suppression
systems, orbitally welded stainless steel pipes, explosion proof gas bunkers, and haz mat storage containers. As a result the plant was able
to continue production.
Since the offices were now being used as a temporary manufacturing area, the office staff had to be relocated to the parking lot. Using
portable field trailers, Rolyn set up management offices in the parking areas, allowing the company to reestablish contact with their
customers and bring their operations back online. Acreage adjacent to the plant was used as a temporary parking lot.
The reconstruction of the plant was also a challenge. Due to the sensitivity of the company’s functions, extreme cleanliness was critical.
All plant operations had to perform to semiconductor Class 100 cleanroom protocol. Rolyn arranged for periodic testing by qualified
laboratories to ensure cleanliness standards were met. Once the rebuilding of the plant was completed, all temporary conditions needed
to be reversed. Rolyn moved the employees back into their offices, disassembled the trailers, restored the adjacent acreage, and returned
the plant to one hundred percent production.

In the evening hours, the area of South Hutchinson, Kansas experienced
heavy thunderstorms that included a microburst. A microburst is similar to a
tornado and is caused by a strong downdraft triggering an outburst of
damaging winds at or near the ground. This microburst was estimated to
have winds in excess of 120 miles per hour causing massive damage to one of
the country’s largest school bus manufacturing plants.
When Rolyn arrived on the scene, the severe damage to the approximately
100,000 ft2 manufacturing plant was immediately evident. The facility’s
interior was totally exposed due to crushed walls and major sections of the
roof were missing. Over 1,200 chassis were on the plant floor being produced in time for the start of the school year. Rolyn coordinated
with the company’s president and operations manager to develop a plan of action to reduce production down-time and the associated
losses of revenue.
Rolyn’s first step in the fast-track recovery stage was to provide the client with two, 80-foot office trailers so that all IT functions, phone,
fax and other business continuity needs could resume. Rolyn simultaneously constructed two, 150-foot temporary walls to protect the
collapsed part of the roof and workspace. Based on the Fire Marshall’s request, Rolyn began re-routing and re-hanging the entire facility’s
fire sprinkler system. After testing gas lines throughout the building to discover the location of any leaks, the lines were then re-routed and
replaced as needed. This enabled the restoration of power to the plant’s heaters and paint booths, allowing operations to commence as
quickly as possible.
After recovering the main production areas, permanent reconstruction work began. Rolyn coordinated with the plant’s operations team to
ensure production could continue while workers reconstructed small sections at a time. Rolyn performed demolition throughout the project
including the removal of all drywall and insulation. The company took the opportunity during the rebuild to make the facility stronger.
Cranes removed the damaged roof structure and replaced one section at a time with roof panels made with heavier roof clips. In addition,
they installed stronger steel support columns and the cranes removed and replaced the rooftop heating and air conditioning units.
In the initial stages of the project following the microburst, the client expressed that within one week, Rolyn needed to return their production
output to 8-10 bus fabrications a day. With Rolyn’s experienced team of emergency responders and technicians, the client was back to
producing 18 busses a day after only 8 days following the microburst. Rolyn’s experience responding to severely damaged facilities and
understanding the client’s priorities minimized business disruption throughout the reconstruction process.
