2. Why You Should Wait to Act on
Sustainability
December 2012
Jennifer Woofter, President of SSC, wrote for
Environmental Leader. Here's what Jennifer had to say:
―Sustainability is a huge, complex, and daunting
challenge. And a growing number of companies feel a
sense of urgency to do something – anything – to show
their stakeholders that they are paying attention. But in
the rush to appear responsive, you may be missing the
boat. We recently came across the Harvard Business
Journal article, Act Fast, but Not Necessarily First. Author
Frank Partnoy makes a compelling case for more
deliberate decision-making … ‖

3. How Chicken of the Sea Drove
Down its Global Footprint
December 2012
Jennifer Woofter, President of SSC, was recently quoted in
a GreenBiz article on SSC client, Chicken of the Sea,
successes:
―We looked into supply chain operations, we looked at
freight for incoming ingredients, packaging and finished
product," said Jennifer Woofter with Strategic
Sustainability Consulting, who was hired to analyze the
company's carbon footprint. "It was quite comprehensive.
We looked at ocean and intermodal freight transportation,
which accounts for 80 percent of its carbon footprint.‖

4. Setting Targets and Encouraging
Behaviors That Work
November 2012
Jennifer Woofter, President of SSC, wrote for the Buildings
publication. Here's what Jennifer had to say:
―In my consulting practice, the biggest flaw I see in
energy management initiatives is ignoring the human
element. You can do a lot to minimize energy use from a
building or facility perspective, but at some point you are
going to have to address employee behavior in the
workplace. This is one of the most challenging aspects of
our work as sustainability practitioners. It involves
changing people’s mindsets. And honestly, as much as
we say that ―going green‖ is hindered by financial costs,
the reality is that it’s time and attention that are the real
obstacles.‖

5. Is the Sustainability Consulting
Market Reaching Maturity?
November 2012
Jennifer Woofter, President of SSC, wrote for
Environmental Leader. Here's what Jennifer had to say:
―For the last decade, the sustainability consulting industry
has been like the Wild West — hundreds of people
jumping in and making their own rules, standards, and
best practices. They created a thousand different services,
promised all kinds of results, and made all kinds of
claims.
For the last eighteen months or so, however, things seem
to be shifting a little bit. So when I came across the Inc.
Magazine article, ―6 Signs Your Market Is Maturing‖ by
Karl Stark and Bill Stewart, I read it with an eye to my
market: the sustainability consulting industry. According
to the article, here are six signs that your market may be
maturing as well as my comments on how each apply
within sustainability consulting.‖

6. Chicken of the Sea Releases First-
Ever Sustainability Report
August 2012
Chicken of the Sea International released its first-ever
corporate sustainability report, the culmination of a
company-wide assessment undertaken in 2011. The
supplier underwent a yearlong, third-party assessment
led by SSC, which examined the company’s practices
throughout the organization and supply chain.
―The first step in developing a strategic sustainability plan
is to understand the leverage points in your operations
and supply chain,‖ said Strategic Sustainability
Consulting’s President Jennifer Woofter. ―By taking a
broad view of the company’s impacts – including facility
management, employee engagement, vendor and supplier
relations, and customer expectations – we were able to
help Chicken of the Sea create a robust plan to address
sustainability in all aspects of its business. Together,
we’ve developed a sustainability strategy that will put
Chicken of the Sea in a leadership position in its
industry.‖

7. Seven Questions to Focus
Sustainability Leadership
August 2012
Jennifer Woofter, President of SSC, wrote for
Environmental Leader. Here's what Jennifer had to
say:
―Sustainability leadership is a challenging issue I’ve
seen crop up in a variety of situations recently,
including:
• Lower-level employees on a volunteer green team,
trying to steer their companies down a greener
path
• Newly appointed Chief Sustainability Officers
(CSOs) charged with the momentous task of
integrating sustainability into the C-Suite
• Sustainability consultants that have buy-in from
the client’s leadership, but are struggling to push
it down into individual departments
In many cases, the people involved are facing a
leadership crisis.‖

8. The Untapped Potential of a
Sustainability Story
July 2012
Jennifer Woofter, President of SSC, wrote for
Environmental Leader. Here's what Jennifer had to
say:
―In last week’s article I talked about the advanced
practice of telling your sustainability story. Today I’d
like to explore that topic a little more.
Inc. Magazine recently ran an article, 11 Tips to
Write Your Own Story by Jeff Haden, on storytelling
basics from a Pixar artist, and then applied those
principles to business and life. I’d like to take it a
step further and examine how some of these
guidelines can help companies craft a more
compelling sustainability story.‖

9. Case Studies Enliven Sustainability
Reports
July 2012
Jennifer Woofter, President of SSC, wrote for
Environmental Leader. Here's what Jennifer had to
say:
―Let’s be honest, sustainability reports can be…dry.
Simply reporting facts and figures will make even the
most stalwart reader begin to yawn. To combat reader
fatigue, it’s critical that your sustainability report tell a
story. Here are some of the stories that your report might
tell:
• A scrappy entrepreneur starts up his new company by
building sustainability into the core of business
operations.
• A company grapples with worldwide economic
uncertainty and struggles to understand what
sustainability *really* means to its decision-making
processes.
• A company commits to achieving true sustainability
based on eco-system accounting, and measures for
the first time its contextual impact on the natural
world.‖

10. Sustainability Reporting: A Few Tricks
Can Save You From a Lot of Heartache
July 2012
Jennifer Woofter, President of SSC, wrote for the
Toronto Sustainability Speaker Series (TSSS). Here's
what Jennifer had to say:
―It seems like over the last few months just about
everyone has put together a list about sustainability
reporting. Common sustainability reporting
mistakes, best sustainability reporting practices,
misconceptions about the Global Reporting
Initiative’s Sustainability Reporting Guidelines — the
list goes on and on. We’ve compiled the best of
those lists right here for easy reference. Enjoy!‖

11. Four Ways Summer Interns Can
Advance Your Corporate Sustainability
July 2012
Jennifer Woofter, President of SSC, wrote for
Environmental Leader. Here's what Jennifer had to
say:
―Summer is in full swing, and that means interns are
probably wandering through your organization’s
hallways, eagerly looking for projects. Rather than
handing off yet another filing task, why not harness
that energy and enthusiasm on an assignment that
will advance your corporate sustainability agenda?
Here are four projects that you can easily assign to
summer staff. These ―intern-ready tasks‖ require no
fancy software or specialized training — just the
ability to move freely around your facility and
observe current practices.‖

12. Reasons Not to Publish a Sustainability
Report (At Least Not Yet)
July 2012
Jennifer Woofter, President of SSC, wrote for the SSC
blog and it was reposted by Environmental Leader in
July. Here's what Jennifer had to say:
―I love sustainability reports. At my company, we
think they are a critical aspect of a company’s
sustainability strategy, useful for looking back and
measuring progress as well as a tool for future
planning.
That doesn’t mean your company should jump on
the sustainability reporting bandwagon, however. In
fact, there are several really good reasons not to
produce a sustainability report (at least, not yet).‖

13. Surveys Indicate CSR As a
Profession is Still in an Early Stage
April 2012
Jennifer Woofter and SSC’s State of the Industry
findings were cited in TriplePundit’s article that
discusses professionals interested in the pursuit of a
career focused on sustainability or corporate social
responsibility (CSR) either feeling motivated or
cautious based on the findings of two reports
released:
―Jennifer Woofter of Strategic Sustainability
Consulting (SSC), a network of over 450
sustainability professionals, headlined a report on
the salaries such professionals can make. The
upshot is that folks interested in this field need to
take the long view. Woofter, SCC’s founder, said in
her video that revenues for new sustainability
consultants with little experience are meager, often
less than $10,000 a year. In other words, do not quit
your day job or say good-bye to your current
freelancing gigs.‖

Know About The Carbon Disclosure
Project
April 2012
Jennifer Woofter, President of SSC, wrote for the
Toronto Sustainability Speaker Series (TSSS) and it
was also picked up in Environmental Leader. Here's
what Jennifer had to say:
―It’s that time of year again when thousands of
companies start preparing their annual Carbon
Disclosure Project (CDP) Report. In 2011, more than
three thousand organizations participated, and if

16. The Brutal Truth about
Sustainability Reporting
March 2012
Jennifer Woofter, President of SSC, wrote for CSRwire
Talkback. Here's what Jennifer had to say:
―Last month, Strategic Sustainability Consulting (SSC)
released its sixth annual Sustainability Report. That
means we have published one report for every year
that we've been in business. And once again, as
cofounder and President, I was the author.
Committing to write an annual sustainability report
is a little bit like spring-cleaning. You try to keep up
with it throughout the year, but it's the once-a-year
deep clean that really scours all the corners.
Much like spring-cleaning, few organizations
eagerly anticipate the sustainability reporting
process, and for good reason. It's a bit of a
nightmare.‖

17. 3 Ways Retailers Can Help Their
Suppliers Tackle Sustainability
February 2012
Jennifer Woofter, President of SSC, wrote for the
Toronto Sustainability Speaker Series (TSSS) and it
was also picked up in Environmental Leader. Here's
what Jennifer had to say:
―At Strategic Sustainability Consulting, we generally
work with the suppliers, rather than the retailers.
And I can say without a doubt that suppliers are
paying attention to sustainability. They are hearing
from virtually every retailer that they sell to, often
multiple times per month. They are scrambling to
gather data, establish goals, and meet new (and
sometimes conflicting) requirements.
To increase the odds of everyone walking away
happier and more sustainable, I offer these three
suggestions for retailers. Accept these challenges,
and your suppliers will not only thank you — they’ll
help you achieve your own sustainability goals.‖

18. After the Energy Audit
October 2011
Strategic Sustainability Consulting President, Jennifer
Woofter writes on energy audits, to include
analyzing data, benchmarking, and setting priorities:
Congratulations! Completing an energy audit is a
major undertaking for most organizations. You
probably spent a lot of time and involved a lot of
people. Just doing an audit is worthy of praise.
Now get ready for the real work.
What comes after the audit is the key. Here’s where
it gets complicated: because there is no one-size-
fits-all strategy for setting and achieving energy
reduction goals, there are no clear rules for how to
implement the audit’s findings.

20. Growing a Green Career in
Sustainability Consulting
September 2011
Sustainability consulting has gone mainstream and
created opportunities for those who can transform
business objectives into results and help companies
integrate environmentally sound standards and eco-
friendly practices. Sustainability consultants advise
businesses large and small and help them explore
the responsible use of resources.
―Targeted expertise in sustainability is key,
according to Jennifer Woofter, founder and president
of Strategic Sustainability Consulting. Woofter's
corporate blog explains that sustainability
professionals need knowledge of environment-
specific business practices. For example, Woofter
knows the difference between SA8000 and the UN
Global Compact and the UN Declaration of Human
Rights, and when each should be applied to a
particular situation.‖ Click here to view this article.

to Avoid It
September 2011
The Coalition for Responsible Fire Protection began
in 2010 as a healthy discussion about how to
balance environmental sensitivity with the need to
preserver life and property. Many large firms now
expect or even demand more environmentally
responsible products and systems, which will reflect
and support their own environmental commitments.
While small steps have been taken to ―green‖ the fire
protection industry, to date the Coalition believes it
has been a mostly cosmetic exercise.

Toronto Sustainability Speaker Series (TSSS). Here's
what Jennifer had to say:

I talk to people about my job as a sustainability
consultant is this: How can I convince [my boss, my
company, my crazy aunt, etc.] that sustainability

Sustainability Pitch Is Failing
May 2011
Jennifer Woofter, President of SSC, wrote for the
Toronto Sustainability Speaker Series (TSSS). Here's
what Jennifer had to say:
―I frequently talk to people who are desperately
trying to ―sell‖ sustainability—and failing. Sometimes
it’s a sustainability consultant that can’t drum up
business even though their target customer seems
to be a no-brainer. Other times it’s an employee
trying to green the company from the inside.
In almost all of the cases, I can trace the cause of
their failure to one or more of the following reasons.
(And unfortunately, it’s often a combination of all
three.) So the next time that you realize you’ve hit a
wall in pushing for sustainability, ask yourself if
you’re you’re making these mistakes.‖

38. Why And How Your
Company Should Go Green
January 2009
Like many growing companies, Fowler Printing and
Graphics is going green. The company recycles
three tons of paper a week, buys renewable energy
credits for wind power, and uses eco-friendly inks
and cleaning compounds on its printing presses.
But Fowler's efforts don't stop there. Nearly half of
its print jobs are now on recycled paper, and
Fowler's 24 employees can buy green stocks for
their 401(k)s.
―It is always easier and more cost effective to think
about green at the beginning rather than come up
with a traditional product and traditional business
model and then try to overlay green.‖

39. What to Look for (and Avoid)
in a Virtual Internship
January 2009
Virtual internships have been around for a little
while but are certainly becoming more prevalent as
organizations constrict their budgets. A step
further than telecommuting, virtual internships
often involve never meeting your supervisor in-
person. Instead, the entire interview process and
internship itself take place over the Web and phone
from the comfort of your dorm, apartment or
home.
―We use virtual interns, since it allows us to work
with the best and the brightest students and new
graduates from around the country without
requiring them to relocate for the duration of the
internship.‖

44. Sustainability Coach Takes
Her Expertise to Market
November 2007
Big business's decision to jump on the green
bandwagon has created a host of opportunities for
consultants with environmental expertise.
Jennifer Woofter recognized the possibilities six
years ago, when she was a research analyst for
Calvert Group, one of the country's largest families
of socially responsible mutual funds. She judged
companies on whether they met Calvert's standards
for social and environmental performance, looking
at their energy and water use, recycling numbers,
workplace diversity and human rights records.
"At the end of the day I'd say thumbs up or thumbs
down, should we invest in this company," she said.
It was an "incredible opportunity," she said, to
understand industry trends as the corporate world
adjusted to this new yardstick of performance.
