3. Indications of early pregnancy are different for each woman. More than likely, your own symptoms will be different from anyone else’s. A lot of symptoms can be routine pre-menstrual discomforts. Each woman needs to know her own body. Many women believe they are just having their regular period when they are really having early pregnancy symptoms.
4. Remember, some of the earliest signs of pregnancy may be subtle. If you have any question that you might be experiencing early signs of pregnancy, do a home pregnancy test or contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible. The following are 15 questions to ask yourself if you think you could be pregnant.
5. Question #1 Have I Missed My Period? Probably the first symptom of pregnancy is when you've missed your period. This early sign often causes women to ask more questions about the other pregnancy symptoms.
6. Question #2 Do I Think I Could Be Pregnant? A lot of women simply “Just Know”. Especially if they have been pregnant before. Some women will say they “Just Feel Different”. They can’t exactly describe it, but they are somehow aware that certain changes are taking place and suspect they could be pregnant.
7. Question #3 Have My Breasts Been Tender Or Sore? An early sign of pregnancy is tender, swollen or maybe sore breasts. Sometimes they seem larger than usual. When pregnant, the body starts preparing your breasts to make milk for breastfeeding. Your nipples can become sore or extra sensitive and often will darken in color. These changes in the breasts and nipples are often considered an obvious sign of pregnancy.
8. Question #4 Am I More Tired Lately? Some women experience fatigue, even exhaustion early in their pregnancy. Daily activities like work, shopping or exercising that were never a bother could be making you feel just plain exhausted now. Many women don’t notice this right away because it doesn’t seem important. Maybe you see you look tired in the mirror. Or a family member asks if you’re getting enough sleep. Fatigue is often an early indicator of important changes in the body.
9. Question #5 Have I Been Urinating More Often? You and the people in your life may notice you seem to go to the toilet more than usual. Going to the toilet a lot is often an early sign of pregnancy. When pregnancy occurs, the uterus starts to get larger and it pushes up against your bladder. This makes you feel like you have to “go” more often. Also, your body is dealing with extra fluids resulting from being pregnant. The extra fluids fill up your bladder faster meaning more trips to the ladies’ room.
10. Question #6 Do I Feel “Sick To My Stomach” Sometimes? Feeling nauseous or “queasy” (even vomiting) can happen as early as one week into the pregnancy. “Morning Sickness” can happen when a pregnant woman drinks coffee or tea or even a small bite of food on an empty stomach. It can happen at any time of day even in the afternoon, evening or at night. Some women feel slightly nauseous, or queasy, all the time. Morning Sickness usually goes away after the body gets used to the many changes happening usually after the 3rd month.
11. Question #7 Have I Been Feeling Light-Headed Or Dizzy? Some women are surprised to know that feeling dizzy or light-headed can be due to their pregnancy. Just getting up after sitting, standing in one place for a while (like at the bank), or climbing stairs can cause light-headedness or even fainting. Your blood pressure can drop due to the uterus pushing up against arteries. This can decrease blood flow causing these symptoms. The same symptoms can occur when you haven’t eaten in a while which may cause low blood sugar. If you have these symptoms please contact your health care provider as soon as possible.
12. Question #8 Am I Craving Certain Foods? Are Other Foods A Real Turn-Off? A new or exaggerated craving for certain food or combination of foods is common. We all know about the “pickles and ice cream” thing. It is real. Many women develop food cravings during their pregnancy. Having a new or exaggerated aversion (turn-off) to a certain food or foods is also very common. Some women experience both cravings and aversions. The key here is that it is a change from your normal food interests.
13. Question #9 Do Certain Smells Seem Different? Often daily aromas or familiar smells can seem exaggerated. Sometimes they seem better, usually they seem bad. Certain smells can actually make you feel nauseated or even gag. Aromas like soaps, perfume even your favorite foods can seem horrible. Cigarette smoke is often one of the worst. Changes in how things smell may be related to the increased estrogen in your body. These changes usually go away after giving birth.
14. Question #10 Do I Have Heartburn Or Constipation? Heartburn may be caused by the uterus starting to swell as it pushes on the stomach. This can cause stomach acid to go up into the esophagus making that burning sensation. Also, the stomach may be emptying slower than normal which makes things even more uncomfortable. Many common antacids contain aluminum and other ingredients that should be avoided during pregnancy. Constipation can be a new problem during pregnancy. Changes in appetite, exercise and fluid intake all contribute. Common laxatives can be harmful and should be avoided during pregnancy. Ask you healthcare provider before self administering any medication.
15. Question # 11 Have I Been Moody Or “Not Myself”? Changes in mood or emotions are perfectly normal for the pregnant woman. There can be “mood swings” from excitement to sadness. Sometimes tears seem to turn to joy and laughter for no good reason. Whether or not it’s your first pregnancy, these changes can be distressing to you and your family, especially to your partner. Frequently, these “mood swings” decrease after the first 3 months or so.
16. Question # 12 Do I Feel Warmer Than Normal? If you have been feeling warmer than normal you could ask yourself if you are getting a cold or flu. Taking your own temperature would let you know if it is higher than normal. When a woman is trying to get pregnant, her healthcare provider might ask her to keep a daily record of her body temperature. If her body temperature stays higher than normal for two weeks it could indicate that something is happening in her body. It could mean pregnancy. Prolonged periods of increased temperature are a reason to seek your health care provider’s advice to be sure of the cause.
17. Question #13 Am I Having Lower-Back Pain? Symptoms of lower-back pain can be an early indicator of pregnancy. It can be caused by weight gain from the enlarging uterus and the baby growing bigger. When she is standing, the front of a pregnant woman’s body is pushed forward by the increased weight. Then her back pulls the other way to try to compensate for the change, causing discomfort. Laying in bed on the side (even though its can be comfortable) pulls the back muscles even more. This can ruin a good night’s sleep.
18. Question # 14 Do I Look Or Feel Bloated? One of the most common indicators of early pregnancy is to look or feel bloated. This happens when the uterus and baby start to grow creating some weight gain and minor discomfort. You may notice your clothes are tighter and laying off the calories doesn’t help. Maybe you even started to gain some weight you just can’t explain. Did those food cravings start to catch up with you? Having food cravings and feeling bloated together may be an important early indicator of pregnancy. Be sure to check with your health care provider if you have any questions about your weight gain.
19. Question # 15 Did I Have A Positive Pregnancy Test? A Positive Pregnancy Test done at your health care clinic or office is considered scientific proof of pregnancy. These are the most accurate. However, there are some very accurate Home Pregnancy Tests available at your pharmacy. Ask your pharmacist or health care provider for more information. For Home Pregnancy Tests it is advisable to wait at least 2-3 days after missing your period. Read and follow the package directions carefully. If you are unsure of the results you might want to do a follow-up test a few days after. If you have a positive Home Pregnancy Test contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible.
