The condition of globality is undermining disciplinary boundaries, including the field of international
development. The novelty of this condition lies in the emergence of global encounters challenging the
mainstream view of development as well as creation of global opportunities for dialogue over the good
conception of development for different nations. At the forefront of this condition stands a threefold
question: How is a good (ethical) conception of development articulated, what are the implications of
the condition of globality for this articulation, and how to interact with global encounters over the
good development?
The condition of globality for development of nations hinges on its directionality. In what direction
should we be orienting ourselves? Toward a submission to global capitalism and integration in free
markets? Toward intensifying our consciousness over how we may develop ourselves within our own
horizon of meaning and our historical context? Or, should we perhaps dialogically encounter global
forces over how we conceive our own view of life, good development, and flourishing? These
phenomenal questions may entail the following deliberation and measures. 1) To establish a good
understanding of the condition of globality [description dimension of the lifeworld]. 2) To understand
its directionality; to know where we are going [orientative dimension of the life]. 3) To test, assess its
potential for a collaborative interaction with global encounters [evaluative dimension]. 4) To articulate
a good conception of development that can address effectively the needs of different nations and their
concerns and expectations [prescriptive dimension].
These implications of the condition of globality urge us to think about how we must interact with
global encounters in order to effectively address our development. This urgency is essentially an
ethical task because it involves the cultural and identity specificity of nations in their interaction with
others. This forum tends to explore determining factors in a good account of development and its
interplay with global encounters over spheres, terms, and conditions of living together.
