                 Lesson 1: 英文の基本構造

1.基本構造
英語の文章構造は、日本語と違い、聞き手にとって非常にわかりやすくなっています。
例えば、次の例文を見てください。

  あなたは、昨日、太郎さんと、水泳に、行きませんでしたか。

あなたは 昨日 太郎さんと 水泳に 行きま せんでした か?
you yesterday with Taro swimming go not did
Didn’t you go swimming with Taro yesterday?

        Taro is my brother.
代名詞 名詞の代わりをする。主語、目的語、補語になる。
        He didn’t tell me that.
助動詞 通常動詞の前に来て、いろいろな文章を作る。
I should go to school. I have never seen an elephant.
動詞 主語の動作や状態を述べる。 be 動詞 と do 動詞 がある。
I went to Taro’s house which was very far.
形容詞 名詞や代名詞の状態や性質を表す。名詞を修飾する。
She is beautiful. She is a beautiful girl. How beautiful is she?
副詞 動詞、形容詞、副詞を修飾する。それぞれの程度を表す。
He came very quickly. I always sleep late. I never eat snack.
前置詞 名詞の前や動詞の後に来て、場所、時間、状況を示す。
He lives in a large city. He cut off the rope.
疑問詞 疑問文の文頭に来る。
What is your name? How many times did he fall?
接続詞 語と語や、文と文をつなぐ。
Jack and I went to the beach.
冠詞 名詞の前に来て、「一つの」や「その」という意味を添える。
A cat is sleeping under the table.

3.助動詞の役割
日本の学校では、S + V + O (C) という形で基本文型を教えていますが、そこには重大な
欠陥があります。前述のように、基本文型は S + A + V + O (C) が正しいのです。なぜ助
動詞(A)を省いてしまったのかはわかりませんが、文章の中でもっとも重要な品詞である助
動詞を省くことは致命的な誤りです。以下のように、英文作成の基本ルールは助動詞なしで
は考えられないのです。

                                                                                       3
The Handbook of English Grammar for Japanese Learners

                  英文作成の基本ルール

             疑問文は、助動詞が主語の前に出る
ルール 1
             否定文では、助動詞の後に not をつける
ルール 2

                  主語 助動詞 動詞 目的語
      肯定文 You can play tennis
      疑問文 Can You play tennis
      否定文 You cannot play tennis

      この表をみれば、助動詞がいかに重要かがわかりますね。
      英文の主語(S)+動詞(V)+目的語(O)は基本的に不動なのです。
      文章の変化はすべて助動詞の変化によって起こるのです。

            be 動詞、完了形の have は、助動詞がない場合、
ルール 3 助動詞の役割をする

                        主語 助動詞 動詞 補語
 助動詞がない場合―肯定文 He Is hungry
            疑問文 Is he
 助動詞がある場合―肯定文 He will be hungry
            疑問文 Will he be hungry

 助動詞がない場合―肯定文 He has played tennis
            疑問文 Has he played tennis
 助動詞がある場合―肯定文 He could Have played
            疑問文 Could he have played

この3ルールをしっかり覚えていれば、どんな文章でも作れます。例文は、テキスト最後の資料3
を参照しましょう。

                                                                             4

4.be 動詞と do 動詞
英語にはbe 動詞を使った文章と do 動詞を使った文章があります。

  be動詞 は、~です(A=B)、~います(状態) という意味で、名詞あるいは状態を示す
  形容詞の補語を伴います。
         I am sleepy. (私は、眠たい、です) ― 状態の形容詞
         I am a fireman. (私は、消防夫、です) ― A=B (Bは名詞)
         I am playing tennis. (私は、テニスをして、います) ― 進行状態の形容詞句 注 1)
         I am frustrated. (私は、苛立って、います) ― 受身状態の形容詞句 注 2)
注1) Lesson 6 現在分詞 参照 注2) Lesson 6 過去分詞 参照

  do動詞 は、~する、~します という動作を表す動詞で、助動詞の do を伴う。ただし、肯定
  文では、do を省くのが普通。
         I (do) play tennis. (私はテニスをします)
         Do you play tennis? (あなた、テニスしますか)
I do not play tennis. (私はテニスをしません)

  Do you ~ と聞かれた場合の答えでは、肯定文であっても、do は省略できない。
肯定文 Yes, I do. (play tennis) (はい、します)
否定文 No, I do not. (play tennis) (いいえ、しません)

   ☆なるほど~☆
  do動詞 の do を省略できるのは、肯定文(現在形および過去形)だけ。
  その場合、三人称単数の“S”は動詞につける。
      He does play tennis.
      He plays tennis.

   過去形の肯定文では、did を省いて、動詞を過去形にする。
      He did play tennis.
      He played tennis.

  したがって、不規則動詞の過去形が思い浮かばないときは、did を残せばいい。
He wrote a letter. ――>He did write a letter.

                                                                                5
The Handbook of English Grammar for Japanese Learners

5.疑問詞の付く疑問文

疑問詞とは、なに(what)、だれ(who)、どこ(where)、なぜ(why)、どれ(which)、どう(how)、など
で、疑問文の前に置くだけです。
(例) 疑問文

              do you play tennis? 君は、テニスをしますか?
Where do you play tennis? 君は、どこでテニスをしますか?
Who do you play tennis with? 君は、だれとテニスをしますか?
When do you play tennis? 君は、いつテニスをしますか?
How often do you play tennis? 君は、どれくらい頻繁にテニスをしますか?
Why do you play tennis? 君は、なぜテニスをするのですか?

6.命令文

命令文とは、相手にある行動を要求することで、かならずしも「命令」の形をとるとはかぎりません。
「~しろ」「~してくれ」「~してください」「~していただきますようおねがいします」というように、そ
の違いは、話し手の口調の強さ、抑揚などで表現されます。

肯 定 命 令 文 「あなたが~する」という形から you を省く
do 動詞 You close the door.  Close the door. (ドアを閉めなさい)
                                         Close the door, please. (ドアを閉めてください)
Close the door, will you? (ドアを閉めてくれる?)
肯 定 命 令 文 「あなたは~である」から you を省き、be 動詞を原形に戻す
be 動詞 You are kind to others.  Be kind to others. (他人には親切にしなさい)
否 定 命 令 文 「あなたが~しない」という形から、you を省く
do 動詞 You don’t talk loud.  Don’t talk loud. (あまり大きな声で話さないで)
否 定 命 令 文 You を省き、be 動詞の前に助動詞の don’t を添える
be 動詞 You are not late.  Don’t be late. (遅れないでね)

                                                                                        6
The Handbook of English Grammar for Japanese Learners

7.受動態
文章の主語と目的語を入れ替えて、受身の形にするには、 be + 過去分詞 + by
の形をとります。
(例) Tom build this house. - This house was built by Tom.
          (トムがこの家を建てた) (この家はトムにより、建てられた)

注) 現在進行形の文章を受動態にする場合、進行形の be と受動態の be は別のもの
            としてとらえるので、be 動詞が重なる。
He is feeding his dog.  His dog is being fed by him.
            (彼は、犬に餌をやっているところです) (彼の犬は、彼に餌を与えられているところです)

8.付加疑問文
付加疑問文は、「~でしょう?」とか「~だろう?」といった疑問文と、「~でしょ」「~だろ」といった
確認文でよく使われます。
(ルールは、本文の主語と助動詞を、あたかも疑問文のようにひっくりかえして、語尾につけるのです。
  この場合、主語はからなず代名詞になります)
 (例) 疑問(語尾をあげる)
Sally met Harry, didn’t she? (サリーは、ハリーに会ったのでしょう?)
       It’s a nice day, isn’t it? (よいお天気ですね?)
You won’t tell him that, will you? (君、彼には言わないよね?)
   確認(語尾を下げる)
You didn’t do your homework, did you? (宿題しなかっただろう)
He showed you my report, didn’t he? (彼に、僕のレポートを見せてもらっただろう)
       It’s good, isn’t it? (おいしいよな、これ)

   これは付加疑問文?
Close the door, will you? (ドアを閉めてくれない)
   命令形の後に、このように will you? をつけることがよくあります。これは、
Will you close the door? (ドアを閉めてくれない?) の変形したもので、
   疑問文として聞いているのでなく、ほとんど命令として言っているものです。

                                                                                           7

              Lesson 2: 時制

時制は、過去、現在、未来の時点での行動、状態を表すためのものです。

              動詞の現在形は「普段~する」という平变文であり、「現在~している」には、
現在形 現在進行形を使う。
(~します) I study English every day.(私は毎日英語の勉強をします)

過去形 動詞の過去形は、過去の特定の時間に起こった事実を述べている
(~しました) I studied English yesterday.(私は昨日英語の勉強をしました)

未来形 未来形は、助動詞の will あるいは be going to を使う
(~する予定です) I will study English tomorrow.(私は明日英語の勉強をするつもりです)
I am going to study English tomorrow.

過去未来形 過去のある時点における未来の予定
(~するつもりだった) I was going to get my hair cut yesterday (but I didn't).
              (昨日、床屋に行くつもりだった)

現在進行形 be + 動詞 ing の形をとり、現在進行中の行動を表す
(~しています) I am studying English right now. (私は今英語の勉強をしています)

☆きわめて重要!☆ 未来のことでも、確定していることなら、現在進行形で話すのが普通。
I am going to visit my aunt this Sunday.
              (この日曜日おばさんの家に行くつもり/予定です)
I am visiting my aunt this Sunday.
              (この日曜日おばさんの家に行きます)

過去進行形 過去のある時間帯における行動 (be 動詞を過去形にするだけ)
(~していました) I was studying English when you came.
              (君が来たとき、僕は英語の勉強をしていた)

未来進行形 未来のある時間帯における行動 (現在進行形に will を付け加えるだけ)
(~しているでしょう) I will be studying English tomorrow afternoon.
              (明日の午後、僕は英語の勉強をしているでしょう)

                                                                                 10

現在完了形 have + 過去分詞、次の3通りの用法がある
経験 Have you (ever) played tennis (before)?
(~したことがある) (テニスをしたことがありますか?)

                        I have played tennis before.
                        (以前テニスをしたことがあります)

完了/結果 Have you (already) played tennis (yet)? 」
(~してしまった) (もうテニスはしたの?)

I have already played tennis. I have not played yet.
                        (もうテニスはしました) (まだテニスはしていません)

                        “yet” は 疑問文では 『もう』, 否定文では 『まだ』

継続(現在完了進行形) have + been + 現在分詞 注1) 注2)
(~ずっと~している) How long have you been playing tennis?
                        (どれくらいテニスをしているんですか?)

I have been playing tennis for two years.
                        (二年間テニスをしています)

過去完了形 had + 過去分詞 過去の時点を基準点にした完了形
(現在完了の3用法と同様) I had never played tennis before I met her.
                        (彼女に会うまで、私はテニスをしたことがなかった)

☆きわめて重要!☆ 会話では、過去完了は過去形で済ましてもさしつかえない

未来完了形 will have + 過去分詞 未来の時点で完了している予定の事実
(~してしまっている) I will have played tennis for two years come next May.
☆会話で必要なし!☆ (5 月になれば、2 年間テニスをしていることになる)

 注1)同じ継続でも、be 動詞の文章(例:I am sick)では進行形は必要ない。
I have been sick for three days. (3 日間ずっと病気です)
 注2)「もう 2 年間ゴルフはしていない」というような、否定文では、「継続」でなく、「結果」になり、
       前置詞は for でなく in (2年間の中で一度もしていない)になる。
I have been playing golf for 2 years. (私は 2 年間ゴルフをしています)
I have not played golf in 2 years. (私は 2 年間ゴルフをしていません)
     過去形と現在完了形の違い
     過去形では、過去のある時点で起こった事実を述べているのに対し、現在完了は、現在の
     時点で、もうしてしまったのかどうか(完了)、過去にしたことがあるのかどうか(経験)を問題
     にしているのです。

                                                                                                  11

では、次の文のどこが間違っているのでしょう。

I have played tennis 20 years ago. (私は、20年前にテニスをしたことがある)

日本語でいうと、さほど違和感を感じませんね。でも、これが一時間前であればどうでしょう?
「私は一時間前にテニスをしたことがあります」 変ですね。すなわち、したことがあるかどう
かを問題にしている現在完了形の文には、「いつ」という過去の時点を明示してはいけないの
です。言い換えれば、過去の時点 (例: when, yesterday, last week, three days ago)が明示
されている場合は、文は必ず過去形でないといけないのです。

                                                                                 12

              Lesson 7: 発音

TH TH think TH that
P, B P Pat B bat
F, V F fail V Vail
T, D T toll D doll
K, G K kong G gong
S, Z S sack Z zack

  • 3. The Handbook of English Grammar for Japanese Learners Lesson 1: 英文の基本構造 1.基本構造 英語の文章構造は、日本語と違い、聞き手にとって非常にわかりやすくなっています。 例えば、次の例文を見てください。 あなたは、昨日、太郎さんと、水泳に、行きませんでしたか。 あなたは 昨日 太郎さんと 水泳に 行きま せんでした か? you yesterday with Taro swimming go not did Didn’t you go swimming with Taro yesterday? 2
  • 4. The Handbook of English Grammar for Japanese Learners 2.品詞の種類 品詞とは言葉の種類です。品詞には次のようなものがあります。 名詞や動詞はだれでも知っていますが、形容詞・副詞の役割をしっかり覚えましょう。 名詞 人や物事の名を表す。主語、目的語、補語になる。 Taro is my brother. 代名詞 名詞の代わりをする。主語、目的語、補語になる。 He didn’t tell me that. 助動詞 通常動詞の前に来て、いろいろな文章を作る。 I should go to school. I have never seen an elephant. 動詞 主語の動作や状態を述べる。 be 動詞 と do 動詞 がある。 I went to Taro’s house which was very far. 形容詞 名詞や代名詞の状態や性質を表す。名詞を修飾する。 She is beautiful. She is a beautiful girl. How beautiful is she? 副詞 動詞、形容詞、副詞を修飾する。それぞれの程度を表す。 He came very quickly. I always sleep late. I never eat snack. 前置詞 名詞の前や動詞の後に来て、場所、時間、状況を示す。 He lives in a large city. He cut off the rope. 疑問詞 疑問文の文頭に来る。 What is your name? How many times did he fall? 接続詞 語と語や、文と文をつなぐ。 Jack and I went to the beach. 冠詞 名詞の前に来て、「一つの」や「その」という意味を添える。 A cat is sleeping under the table. 3.助動詞の役割 日本の学校では、S + V + O (C) という形で基本文型を教えていますが、そこには重大な 欠陥があります。前述のように、基本文型は S + A + V + O (C) が正しいのです。なぜ助 動詞(A)を省いてしまったのかはわかりませんが、文章の中でもっとも重要な品詞である助 動詞を省くことは致命的な誤りです。以下のように、英文作成の基本ルールは助動詞なしで は考えられないのです。 3
  • 5. The Handbook of English Grammar for Japanese Learners 英文作成の基本ルール 疑問文は、助動詞が主語の前に出る ルール 1 否定文では、助動詞の後に not をつける ルール 2 主語 助動詞 動詞 目的語 肯定文 You can play tennis 疑問文 Can You play tennis 否定文 You cannot play tennis この表をみれば、助動詞がいかに重要かがわかりますね。 英文の主語(S)+動詞(V)+目的語(O)は基本的に不動なのです。 文章の変化はすべて助動詞の変化によって起こるのです。 be 動詞、完了形の have は、助動詞がない場合、 ルール 3 助動詞の役割をする 主語 助動詞 動詞 補語 助動詞がない場合―肯定文 He Is hungry 疑問文 Is he 助動詞がある場合―肯定文 He will be hungry 疑問文 Will he be hungry 助動詞がない場合―肯定文 He has played tennis 疑問文 Has he played tennis 助動詞がある場合―肯定文 He could Have played 疑問文 Could he have played この3ルールをしっかり覚えていれば、どんな文章でも作れます。例文は、テキスト最後の資料3 を参照しましょう。 4
  • 6. The Handbook of English Grammar for Japanese Learners 4.be 動詞と do 動詞 英語にはbe 動詞を使った文章と do 動詞を使った文章があります。 be動詞 は、~です(A=B)、~います(状態) という意味で、名詞あるいは状態を示す 形容詞の補語を伴います。 I am sleepy. (私は、眠たい、です) ― 状態の形容詞 I am a fireman. (私は、消防夫、です) ― A=B (Bは名詞) I am playing tennis. (私は、テニスをして、います) ― 進行状態の形容詞句 注 1) I am frustrated. (私は、苛立って、います) ― 受身状態の形容詞句 注 2) 注1) Lesson 6 現在分詞 参照 注2) Lesson 6 過去分詞 参照 do動詞 は、~する、~します という動作を表す動詞で、助動詞の do を伴う。ただし、肯定 文では、do を省くのが普通。 I (do) play tennis. (私はテニスをします) Do you play tennis? (あなた、テニスしますか) I do not play tennis. (私はテニスをしません) Do you ~ と聞かれた場合の答えでは、肯定文であっても、do は省略できない。 肯定文 Yes, I do. (play tennis) (はい、します) 否定文 No, I do not. (play tennis) (いいえ、しません) ☆なるほど~☆ do動詞 の do を省略できるのは、肯定文(現在形および過去形)だけ。 その場合、三人称単数の“S”は動詞につける。 He does play tennis. He plays tennis. 過去形の肯定文では、did を省いて、動詞を過去形にする。 He did play tennis. He played tennis. したがって、不規則動詞の過去形が思い浮かばないときは、did を残せばいい。 He wrote a letter. ――>He did write a letter. 5
  • 7. The Handbook of English Grammar for Japanese Learners 5.疑問詞の付く疑問文 疑問詞とは、なに(what)、だれ(who)、どこ(where)、なぜ(why)、どれ(which)、どう(how)、など で、疑問文の前に置くだけです。 (例) 疑問文 do you play tennis? 君は、テニスをしますか? Where do you play tennis? 君は、どこでテニスをしますか? Who do you play tennis with? 君は、だれとテニスをしますか? When do you play tennis? 君は、いつテニスをしますか? How often do you play tennis? 君は、どれくらい頻繁にテニスをしますか? Why do you play tennis? 君は、なぜテニスをするのですか? 6.命令文 命令文とは、相手にある行動を要求することで、かならずしも「命令」の形をとるとはかぎりません。 「~しろ」「~してくれ」「~してください」「~していただきますようおねがいします」というように、そ の違いは、話し手の口調の強さ、抑揚などで表現されます。 肯 定 命 令 文 「あなたが~する」という形から you を省く do 動詞 You close the door.  Close the door. (ドアを閉めなさい) Close the door, please. (ドアを閉めてください) Close the door, will you? (ドアを閉めてくれる?) 肯 定 命 令 文 「あなたは~である」から you を省き、be 動詞を原形に戻す be 動詞 You are kind to others.  Be kind to others. (他人には親切にしなさい) 否 定 命 令 文 「あなたが~しない」という形から、you を省く do 動詞 You don’t talk loud.  Don’t talk loud. (あまり大きな声で話さないで) 否 定 命 令 文 You を省き、be 動詞の前に助動詞の don’t を添える be 動詞 You are not late.  Don’t be late. (遅れないでね) 6
  • 8. The Handbook of English Grammar for Japanese Learners 7.受動態 文章の主語と目的語を入れ替えて、受身の形にするには、 be + 過去分詞 + by の形をとります。 (例) Tom build this house. - This house was built by Tom. (トムがこの家を建てた) (この家はトムにより、建てられた) 注) 現在進行形の文章を受動態にする場合、進行形の be と受動態の be は別のもの としてとらえるので、be 動詞が重なる。 He is feeding his dog.  His dog is being fed by him. It’s a nice day, isn’t it? (よいお天気ですね?) You won’t tell him that, will you? (君、彼には言わないよね?) 確認(語尾を下げる) You didn’t do your homework, did you? (宿題しなかっただろう) He showed you my report, didn’t he? (彼に、僕のレポートを見せてもらっただろう) It’s good, isn’t it? (おいしいよな、これ) これは付加疑問文? Close the door, will you? (ドアを閉めてくれない) 命令形の後に、このように will you? をつけることがよくあります。これは、 Will you close the door? (ドアを閉めてくれない?) の変形したもので、 疑問文として聞いているのでなく、ほとんど命令として言っているものです。 7

  • 11. The Handbook of English Grammar for Japanese Learners Lesson 2: 時制 時制は、過去、現在、未来の時点での行動、状態を表すためのものです。 動詞の現在形は「普段~する」という平变文であり、「現在~している」には、 現在形 現在進行形を使う。 (~します) I study English every day.(私は毎日英語の勉強をします) 過去形 動詞の過去形は、過去の特定の時間に起こった事実を述べている (~しました) I studied English yesterday.(私は昨日英語の勉強をしました) 未来形 未来形は、助動詞の will あるいは be going to を使う (~する予定です) I will study English tomorrow.(私は明日英語の勉強をするつもりです) I am going to study English tomorrow. 過去未来形 過去のある時点における未来の予定 (~するつもりだった) I was going to get my hair cut yesterday (but I didn't). (昨日、床屋に行くつもりだった) 現在進行形 be + 動詞 ing の形をとり、現在進行中の行動を表す (~しています) I am studying English right now. (私は今英語の勉強をしています) ☆きわめて重要!☆ 未来のことでも、確定していることなら、現在進行形で話すのが普通。 I am going to visit my aunt this Sunday. (この日曜日おばさんの家に行くつもり/予定です) I am visiting my aunt this Sunday. (この日曜日おばさんの家に行きます) 過去進行形 過去のある時間帯における行動 (be 動詞を過去形にするだけ) (~していました) I was studying English when you came. (君が来たとき、僕は英語の勉強をしていた) 未来進行形 未来のある時間帯における行動 (現在進行形に will を付け加えるだけ) (~しているでしょう) I will be studying English tomorrow afternoon. (明日の午後、僕は英語の勉強をしているでしょう) 10
  • 12. The Handbook of English Grammar for Japanese Learners 現在完了形 have + 過去分詞、次の3通りの用法がある 経験 Have you (ever) played tennis (before)? (~したことがある) (テニスをしたことがありますか?) I have played tennis before. (以前テニスをしたことがあります) 完了/結果 Have you (already) played tennis (yet)? 」 (~してしまった) (もうテニスはしたの?) I have already played tennis. I have not played yet. (もうテニスはしました) (まだテニスはしていません) “yet” は 疑問文では 『もう』, 否定文では 『まだ』 継続(現在完了進行形) have + been + 現在分詞 注1) 注2) (~ずっと~している) How long have you been playing tennis? (どれくらいテニスをしているんですか?) I have been playing tennis for two years. (二年間テニスをしています) 過去完了形 had + 過去分詞 過去の時点を基準点にした完了形 (現在完了の3用法と同様) I had never played tennis before I met her. (彼女に会うまで、私はテニスをしたことがなかった) ☆きわめて重要!☆ 会話では、過去完了は過去形で済ましてもさしつかえない 未来完了形 will have + 過去分詞 未来の時点で完了している予定の事実 (~してしまっている) I will have played tennis for two years come next May. ☆会話で必要なし!☆ (5 月になれば、2 年間テニスをしていることになる) 注1)同じ継続でも、be 動詞の文章(例:I am sick)では進行形は必要ない。 I have been sick for three days. (3 日間ずっと病気です) 注2)「もう 2 年間ゴルフはしていない」というような、否定文では、「継続」でなく、「結果」になり、 前置詞は for でなく in (2年間の中で一度もしていない)になる。 I have been playing golf for 2 years. (私は 2 年間ゴルフをしています) I have not played golf in 2 years. (私は 2 年間ゴルフをしていません) 過去形と現在完了形の違い 過去形では、過去のある時点で起こった事実を述べているのに対し、現在完了は、現在の 時点で、もうしてしまったのかどうか(完了)、過去にしたことがあるのかどうか(経験)を問題 にしているのです。 11
  • 13. The Handbook of English Grammar for Japanese Learners では、次の文のどこが間違っているのでしょう。 I have played tennis 20 years ago. (私は、20年前にテニスをしたことがある) 日本語でいうと、さほど違和感を感じませんね。でも、これが一時間前であればどうでしょう? 「私は一時間前にテニスをしたことがあります」 変ですね。すなわち、したことがあるかどう かを問題にしている現在完了形の文には、「いつ」という過去の時点を明示してはいけないの です。言い換えれば、過去の時点 (例: when, yesterday, last week, three days ago)が明示 されている場合は、文は必ず過去形でないといけないのです。 12

  • 51. The Handbook of English Grammar for Japanese Learners Lesson 7: 発音 1. TH TH think TH that P, B P Pat B bat F, V F fail V Vail T, D T toll D doll K, G K kong G gong S, Z S sack Z zack 50
