Expertise in Space engineering projects

Magna Parva received funding from ESA to develop an Ultrasonic Drill for
Planetary Sampling within the Aurora programme, which, in order to function
optimally required the development of an innovative Auto-Resonant Control system
(ARC).

•

Knowledge exchange funding led to radically changing the current
manufacturing process for cans away from a cold, high force metal
forming system. The potential it offers will save up to 50,000 tonnes
of raw material annually by the proposed process changes, resulting
in large cost savings and enabling a major reduction of carbon emissions

•

The ESA GSTP project: In-orbit manufacturing of very long booms, is a direct result of two
sources of funding that in this instance were used as an alternative to ESA TRP funding:
TSB The Feasibility Studies Competition: Innovation in Space funded project
(Manufacture of Large Space Structures) completed in 2011.
UKSA NSTP Future Technology Pathfinder Programme funded project
(Pultruded Space Components) completed in 2012.
This project was a 1st step on the roadmap to in-situ manufacturing.

The ESA Business Incubation Centre
(ESA BIC) Harwell supports
entrepreneurs and high tech startup companies who are converting
space technologies, applications and
services into viable non-space
business ideas.

In addition to a cash
incentive, the ESA BIC
provides up to 10 start-up
companies per year with
unique access to technical
expertise, access to
equipment and business
support.

What do we offer to our “incubatees”?
• Access to sources of regional, national and joint venture
capital funding
• A cash incentive scheme of £41.5k (€50k)
• Easy access to STFC, Satellite Applications Catapult and
ESA's technical expertise, technology and IP
• Hands-on business development support and advice
• Access to the strategic partnerships and networking
opportunities
• 40 hours of free access STFC resources such as test
facilities, laboratories and workshops including ITAC
• Fully equipped office space with access to shared facilities

How can you apply?

ESA BIC Harwell has an open call for proposals, which means that you can
submit an application to us at any time.
The deadline for the next selection campaign is the 4th November 2013.
The main requirement for acceptance in ESA's Business Incubation scheme
is that your product or service is based on a transfer of space technology,
and/or the utilisation of a space system in a non-space environment.
All of the documents you need to make your application to us are on our
website www.esa-bic.org.uk

and the Said Venture Fund Competition as a transformational
company utilizing innovative technologies to develop commercially
viable products within the heat transfer industry

Instantview


Instantview are developing a mobile phone app
which helps insurers reduce the costs of
administering claims



Drivers use the iPhone app to take an images of an
accident, as well as details of the cars and people
involved. The information is packaged and sent back
to a central server. The server can then assess
information such as local traffic and weather
conditions car and driver information, to provide
insurers with a cohesive summary of the incident.

(mid TRLs and commercial routes) • IGT roadmapping exercise provides existing and needed capabilities for the UK in five defined areas. Case Study SME engagement • Expertise in Space engineering projects • Magna Parva received funding from ESA to develop an Ultrasonic Drill for Planetary Sampling within the Aurora programme, which, in order to function optimally required the development of an innovative Auto-Resonant Control system (ARC). • Knowledge exchange funding led to radically changing the current manufacturing process for cans away from a cold, high force metal forming system. The potential it offers will save up to 50,000 tonnes of raw material annually by the proposed process changes, resulting in large cost savings and enabling a major reduction of carbon emissions • The ESA GSTP project: In-orbit manufacturing of very long booms, is a direct result of two sources of funding that in this instance were used as an alternative to ESA TRP funding: TSB The Feasibility Studies Competition: Innovation in Space funded project (Manufacture of Large Space Structures) completed in 2011. UKSA NSTP Future Technology Pathfinder Programme funded project (Pultruded Space Components) completed in 2012. This project was a 1st step on the roadmap to in-situ manufacturing. “The UKSA funding was pivotal in enabling us to bring about this technology transfer work”, says Andrew Bowyer, Commercial Director of Magnaparva.
