9. Tackling Medical Waste-
Saving African Lives
How the SPACE IDEAS HUB is helping
us to confirm the quality of our medicines
10. WHAT IS THE CONNECTION?
EXOMARS ROVER DISPENSARY IN GHANA
11. What is Inter Care?
• Small, unique registered
charity. Based in
Leicestershire for nearly 40
years
• We collect patient-
returned medicines from
around the UK. These
valuable medicines would
otherwise be incinerated
• We recycle them and
supply 121 clinics in 6
African countries serving
around 9 million people.
12. Tackling Medical Waste
Collect from over 1,000 registered GP surgeries and others.
With help of> 50 volunteers, medicines screened to ensure:-
– Intact and good quality.
– At least 15 months from expiry.
– Suitable for purpose.
Medicines supplied are
– Free
– Go direct to clinics (visited every 3 years)
– Each centre receives 2 large consignments per
annum
– Recipient- led to avoid unsuitable donations
13. Why?
£800million
of NHS prescribed medicines
are destroyed per year.
Clinics in Africa cannot buy
medicines- yet they are
wasted in the UK!
WHO estimates up to 30% of
medicines available in poor
African countries are fake.
14. Helping the NHS &
Environment
• Saves the NHS the cost of waste collection and
disposal.
• Reduces environmental problems
• Preserves the embedded carbon content of the
medicines.
• Compliant with relevant Environment Agency and
Home Office regulations.
We have sent over £10m of recycled
medicines and medical supplies to Africa.
£774,535 in the last year!
15. QUALITY OF RECYCLED
DRUGS
• Studies in the USA suggest most drugs
retain their potency even after expiry date.
• 39 states have recycling schemes
• Recycling within the UK not allowed for
fear of misuse or fraud and concern about
quality after storage in patients’ homes.
• BUT Patients’own drugs allowed in
hospital and reuse of medicines
sanctioned in Swine Flu epidemic
16. Inter Care /Space Ideas
Hub.Aims of the collabrative
study
1.Determine if Raman spectroscopy can
verify the activity of patient returned
medicines with >15months shelf life.
2.Establish a technique for rapid screening
of large batches of tablets, possibly in
their original packs.
17. METHOD
• METFORMIN 500mgm tablets were
tested with a Raman 532nm portable
spectrophotometer to obtain spectra from
the sub-surface of TEST and CONTROL
batches
• The TEST batch- patient returns, expiry
date 08/2014.
• The CONTROL batch- recently bought
packs,expiry date 05/2016
18. Results and conclusions
• The Raman signatures of the test and
control batches were the same.
• The readings taken at different positions
on the surface of the same tablet were
identical.
• The results were reproducible and
detected no loss of the active ingredient
on storage. More work needed to link
Raman signatures with proven efficacy.

30. What we do
• Prove principles
• Design and develop new products
• Improve efficiency of existing products
• Enhance product identity
• Minimise production costs
• Increase serviceability
• Minimise material costs
• Generate IP
31. How we do it
• Product feasibility studies
• Generate Product Concepts
• Develop chosen design ideas
• Produce prototypes
• Develop the detailed design for manufacturing
• Manufacture small volumes
• Provide support for the manufacturing process.
32. Types of projects
• Virtual Reality Headsets and Finger Trackers

36.
37. Our problem
• Needed to take weight out of product
• Needed an objective viewpoint
• Needed to provide a compelling case for the project
to continue development
• Needed to bring experts together to determine the
best way forward
38. What we did
• Met with the Space ideas hub
• Asked them to propose ideas
• Gained agreement with the client
• Made arrangements for funding
• Arranged the meeting
• Held a collaborative meeting to expertly
assess the product
39. How the space ideas hub helped us
• Outcomes of the collaboration were positive.
• Provided objective view on the development of the
product.
• Generated testable ideas.
• Potentially generated over £70k for local businesses
and may potentially generate a further £125k.
• Hoping to provide a demonstrator for an exhibition
in March 2013.
