Be Looked At
It was a cabaret
show in Paris that first
convinced the young
Christian Louboutin that
he should start making
shoes. The showgirls on
stage, he says, “looked
likebirdsofparadiseand
theonlythingmanmade
about them were their
shoes”. This fascination
grewuntilonedayhesaw
a sign in a museum that
banned high heels: he
knew that he had to do
somethingthatbrokethe
rules.Afterperfectinghis
shoemaking craft during
an internship at Paris’s
FoliesBergèremusichall,
Louboutin opened his
firststore,introducinghis
trademarkred-soles.
Twenty years on,
Louboutin is celebrating
these achievements and
morebyteamingupwith
the Design Museum in
London. The collabora-
tion celebrates a career
inwhichhehasshookup
luxury footwear. “Having
this exhibition allowed
me to see what was
missing and what I had
forgotten,” he says. “It’s
abitemotionalbecauseI
don’tseparatemyprivate
andworklife.”
