Intro case: PBI
After ten years in business
and a phase of rapid growth,
our Berlin-based qualitative research
and consultancy company
Point-Blank International had
OUTGROWN its
structures…
4. 4 POINT-BLANK INTERNATIONAL
PBI Growth
We needed
to grow into
our new
shoes
and understand
how we could
optimize the way we
relate to each other
and work together.

Learnings
Many companies
aim to decode,
define and
ultimately capitalize
on their unique
cultural code…
8. 8 POINT-BLANK INTERNATIONAL
Learnings
But however noble
the goal is, in the
constraints of day-
to-day work
routines, ‘shaping
your culture’ is
often difficult to
pursue.

Introduction to an internal innovation process
So we decided is was time to shake
things up a little: With the help of an
innovation coach, we opened up
our office and our minds!
The goal:
Re-design the
way we think
together, work
with each other,
and partner up
with our clients!

Introduction to an internal innovation process
So what happens when a
research company is brave
enough to turn the tables?
Studying their own community
culture just as they do every day
with clients and consumers…

Introduction to an internal innovation process
Can instilling a mindset of
innovation and design

So, what was new about the workshop format? We wanted
to...
... create an interactive learning environment
... put the audience in the driver’s seat
... enable the audience to translate findings into
action
... put experience at the heart of the matter

Living change
From a trainee’s view to a manager’s perspective
Behaviour and established
structures are hard to
change
and improve.
We have learned that change
begins with the individual and
happens on all levels of a
company.
Change requires open-
mindedness, the willingness
to question yourself, and
being empathetic to each
other’s needs and perspectives.

Living change

Testimonial 1 - Kim
I think it’s great that we are encouraged
to learn by doing, and are allowed to
make mistakes and learn from them
Along with that, people expect you to get
out of your comfort zone, and give you
quite personal feedback
> it is harder to receive feedback on your
personality than on your work

Living change

Testimonial 2 - Paul
I used to be the only one doing the “cool stuff” - a.k.a.
designing presentations.
Now we are a team that thinks of and designs new
processes, business solutions as well as presentations
I have noticed that I needed rethink my
reward system
I now get my job satisfaction from group
efforts and I am still not sure what that means
for me

Living change
From a trainee’s view to a manager’s perspective
Testimonial 3 - Dotti
I was the one asking for change. Be
careful what you wish for, because it
might come true!
Even though I love the atmosphere in the
office now, they don’t massage my ego any
more I found myself joining meetings
that talked about my company’s values
without consulting me

Activation Task
Take a piece of paper – A4 – a pen –
make 2 lines and label them A) and B)
A) Line:
Think of a question that you would like to
be asked once by a colleague – a
question you feel could really help you to
tell your colleague something about
yourself.
B) Line
Think about a question that you would
like to ask to a member of this webinar
(someone who you do not know in
person) in order to get to know each
other. Don’t be shy; any kinds of
questions are fine! No social pressure!

Hands on
From digital to analogue
Working analogue helps structure
work processes and thoughts and
opens new views.
Ideas are more tangible and
malleable when represented
physically instead of digitally.
Patterns and structures are easier
to recognize and adjust when
written down on paper.
25. 25POINT-BLANK INTERNATIONALTestimonial 1 - Christopher
When I started at Point-Blank International, creating written
output was very challenging.
When it was time to write my first report, I didn‘t know what to
expect, so I just sat at my computer and started 3 weeks and
a lot of nerves later I was finished; instead of 4 days later
Then Lorry came and showed us stickies the analysis
process has become much easier and fun ever since.
Now I can write my ideas on them and make idea clouds,
cluster them and rearrange them over and over again

26. 26POINT-BLANK INTERNATIONALTestimonial 2 - Miriam
We used to have quite individualistic work routines where
everyone was basically hiding behind their computer screens,
but that changed.
We had a persona workshop that explained how to capture target
groups in a way that could give clients a better feel.
After we came from the field we all met at a flipchart and started
discussing away, and were able to bring “living” personas to the
clients.
This ‘experimental approach’ and its results are characteristic of
the change we have undergone, I feel.

Activation Task
Turn over the paper and draw 2 squares.
Label them ‘Out of Memory’ and ‘With
Inspiration’
Tell the story about your first work task
this morning. What did you do and what
happened?
Write this down in 3 sentences!
Now I will show you 4 photos in the
following slide. Tell the story again by
using at least 2 of the photos as
illustrations of your description.

Office playground
From storage room to inspirational hub
Offices reflect and influence
behaviour, atmosphere and
moods of working in companies.
PBI’s two completely different
office spaces affect and
complement each other,
alternating between ‘business
style’ and interactive
brainstorming in socks.
30. 30POINT-BLANK INTERNATIONALTestimonial 1- Georg
When I joined 2 months ago I found two workspaces the office
designed by a star architect, and a huge and bright storage-
room-turned-attic with a few desks in it
I saw potential in the space so I drew up a floor plan and added
a lot of cool gadgets like whiteboards, flipcharts etc. and then
showed it to Christian. After a bit of nagging, he handed me cash
So I bought some equipment and started renovating the “attic,”
but at some point it hit me that I was rearranging other people’s
workspace everyone liked my concept as it turns out

31. 31POINT-BLANK INTERNATIONALTestimonial 2 - Christian
We wanted the office to be a special place, so we hired a well-
known Berlin architect to design it into a clear-cut, minimalistic &
no disruptions sort of office
It felt rather sophisticated and too cool to be creative it
certainly reflected my work personality, but then I went up on the
5th
floor and saw how things are different
The mode of working up there was more playful, experimental
and creative, and it enables me to work differently as well

Activation Task
O.K last task!
Think about something (a place, a thing
or a condition) that you have at home and
that you would love to replicate in your
office!
Imagine how that would look.
Can you make a little sketch of it?
No, please do not say you cannot draw

Phase 2 still in progress
Go out of your innovation island
and bring it to your daily working
life:
•Create meeting formats
•Create learning formats
•Establish workshop culture

I would suggest to change the metaphore... Fron „to grow into our new shoes “ (I see something negative here...) to „To grow our new shoes “ (as it is the structure who had to adapt to the activity...)
In middle management layer was established, time tracking was introduice...
For the HPI d.confestival in September 2012, we developed a novel workshop format to share the success as well as troubles of our innovation process.
We all know change doesn ’t come easy. If you want change to happen, YOU need to change that wasn’t easy for everyone!

We realize that our work was confined to one person ’s head and executed through their computers. These thoughts needed to become visible tangible and sharable.
