Social Media Week Glasgow Cheat Sheet Series – No. 1 What is Social Media Week ?




Social Media Week is a worldwide event exploring the social, cultural and economic impact of
social media. SMW mission is to help people and organizations connect through collaboration,
learning and the sharing of ideas and information.

SMW hosts two global conferences each year and offers a unique opportunity for brands
looking to connect with hyper-social influencers on a local and global scale. Annually, SMW
attracts more than 60,000 attendees across 24+ cities, hosting over two thousand individually
organized events, with half a million connecting to the conference online and through mobile.

SMW Glasgow is curated by twintangibles. Past and current supporters include Equator, the
Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, Glasgow Museums, Creative Scotland, to name a few. Last
year’s events welcomed more than 3000 registrants; 118 events took place in 47 different
locations in Glasgow, one in Edinburgh, one in Aberdeen. The week recorded over 13k
mentions online, 240 mentions in blog posts, and over 200k viewer minutes on Livestream.
Finally, the event was featured on the main news channels including BBC Radio Scotland and
STV (news.stv.tv), and this year it has already received coverage in The Evening Times.

Social Media Week is a crowdsourced event: people submit and curate their own event that, if
approved, will fall under the umbrella of SMW. All of the events at SMW are FREE with many
taking place in striking locations and involving multiple partners from all sectors. Events are
diverse and range from networking opportunities through awareness raising sessions,
conference discussions to gala events with world class speakers streamed to a global audience.
The collective effect of each event host advertising their event to their audience makes the
impact of the overarching event tremendously significant.

This is a highly engaged and inclusive event and organisations can get involved and enjoy
substantial on line and off line brand exposure through sponsorship, venue provision, and
logistical support.

Involvement in Social Media week presents an opportunity for global exposure and recognition
of a city as being at the cutting edge of digital engagement and understanding, and garners
association with global sponsoring brands such as Nokia.

This year’s global theme is “Empowering Change through Collaboration”, developed by Don
Tapscott.
