PERSONAL STATEMENT
I am a loyal, reliable, flexible and adaptable senior manager with a broad range of management
experience with extensive knowledge of the vocational learning sector and a range of skills covering most
aspects of staff, resource and financial management. Calm under pressure but able to make key
decisions when required. I have a strong interest in promoting the work-based or vocational route for
young people as a viable alternative to university. I also have an interest in the technical side of things
but am not an expert.
EMPLOYMENT

Trainee Assessor September-November 2015
Key Responsibilities
• Assessing Learners in the workplace on Management qualifications up to Level 5
• Maintaining paper and electronic records
• Use of online e-portfolio
• Advising learners on progression options
WS Training, Suffolk
Director of Vocational Learning - April 2006 – March 2015
Key responsibilities:
• Managed the delivery of £3million annual Government funded Apprenticeships, Workplace
Learning and Study Programme (including Traineeships) contracts with 1400 learners on
programme with performance above National rates for last 3 years.
• Managed Apprenticeship Recruitment and Employer Engagement Team and frequently attended
schools and careers events to promote Apprenticeships and Traineeships.
• Managed team of Assessors and support staff (30+) across four sites and wide range of vocational
subjects.
• Set, monitored and managed recruitment targets to meet Government Contract requirements.
• Provided SMT with Government Contract Financial and Performance Reports to monitor ongoing
activity and manage performance against profile with Government Agencies.
• Represented WS Training and Suffolk based providers at events, Networks and business
meetings and served as Chair of Suffolk Training Provider Network and East of England Network
Group.
• Delivered presentations to IAG professionals in Suffolk about the vocational options available to
young people.
• Managed delivery of subcontracted provision including initial approval, contractual arrangements
and ongoing performance against agreed targets.
• Held overall responsibility for Safeguarding and Health and Safety on Government funded
programmes and member of company H&S committee.
• Acted as Nominee for 3 Ofsted/ALI inspections with last outcome a strong Grade 2 (2013)
• Acted as main link with external IT support provider including managing transition to companywide
Cloud based server system in 2012 and held responsibility for acquisition of IT and Telecoms
equipment.
• Served as elected Board member of Association of Employment and Learning Providers (AELP)
from March 2014 to March 2015.
British Racing School, Newmarket
Operations Director – August 1999 – March 2006
Key responsibilities:
•• Managed delivery of racing industry staff training at the main Racing Centre of Excellence in
Newmarket for new stable staff, flat and jump racing jockeys, Racing Secretaries, Amateur and
Point to Point jockeys, junior managers and Racehorse Trainers.
•• Managed Contracts with Government and Racing Industry Agencies to the value of £2million
annually.
•• Set, monitored and managed recruitment targets to meet Government Contract requirements.
•• Introduced ICT networking and integrated telecoms system and then managed upkeep of said
system and acquisition of new ICT hardware as necessary to support administrative and training
needs.
•• Managed on-site Conference facilities liaising with Catering and Facilities management teams to
ensure high quality service to all customers.
•• Acted as Nominee for 2 ALI inspections including achieving Grade 2 in 2001 and then Grade 1 in
2005.

Lieutenant Commander – September 1976 – August 1999
Key activities:
• Joined Royal Navy as junior officer at Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth
• Graduated from City University London with Bsc(Hons) in Systems Science and Management
• Served in different classes of ship as an Aircraft Controller and then Principle/Advanced Warfare
Officer including 2 year exchange tour in New Zealand, action during Falklands Campaign in 1982
and in both HMS ILLUSTRIOUS and ARK ROYAL aircraft carriers.
• Served in range of training roles at RN and RAF establishments
• Retired from RN as Lieutenant Commander in 1999

I have attended a wide range of courses relevant to working in the vocational/education sector including
LSC Health and Safety Standards, Safeguarding, Training Needs Analysis, Customer Care, Performance
Monitoring, CWDC Training for Frontline Practitioners, Data Protection, Stress Management and Microsoft
Excel.
PERSONAL INTERESTS
I have been a Parish Councillor since 2003 and Chairman of Holbrook Parish Council since 2007 and took
over as the Poppy Appeal Organiser for Holbrook in 2014. I am a lifelong supporter of Ipswich Town FC
and am a season ticket holder and aim to attend all home games. I also like to do a bit of photography
when I can.
