2. Melanie Hayes was sleeping peacefully, softly snoring. It had taken her a while to fall asleep; it’s always hard to fall asleep the night before the first day of school.
3. “Melanie…Mel, honey…” Melanie woke with a start. Through sleep-blurred eyes, she saw her mother standing above her. “Oh…hey…” Her mother grinned broadly. “Good morning, angel. Get dressed and come down for breakfast. First day of school!”
4. Melanie groaned at that. Oh God…she thought. It’s the first day of school. Despite her reluctance to attend her first day of high school, Melanie got out of bed and dressed.
5. “Morning, Mom. Morning, Daddy.” “Good morning, sweetie,” came her dad’s reply. “Are you ready for school?” “As ready as I could possibly be.”
6. “Have you got everything you need? Do you know where to go? Are you sure you’re supposed to go to high school already?” “Daddy! Yes, yes, and yes! I’m 14, I can do this.”
7. “Your father and I are just worried, baby, that’s all. It seems like just yesterday you were born…” “Oh God, Mom, don’t cry.” “I can’t help it!”
8. “Anyway, there’s the bus; I gotta go. I’ll see you two later!” “Bye sweetie!” “We love you!” “Don’t talk to strangers!” “Don’t have sex!” “DADDY!” **********************************************************************
9. “So…” “So…” “So, that’s the high school, Mel. I thought you said it was smaller!” Angelina Garcia, Melanie’s best friend, exclaimed. “It WAS smaller at registration!” Angelina sighed. “Look, there’s the girls!”
10. Angelina and Melanie rushed up to their two other friends, Selena and Mallory. Mallory drew Melanie into a hug. “Mel! Hi!” “How is everybody?” Selena asked. “We haven’t seen you all summer. You two just HAD to go on vacation together. You couldn’t bring us!” “We’re both great.” The bell rang. “We gotta go. We’ll sit together at lunch!” *********************************************************
11. “Okay, students, settle down.” Melanie and Angelina were sitting in homeroom, contemplating the best brand of lipgloss. “Okay, I get what you’re saying, Ang, but I still say Simbelline is the best. It’s not sticky, and they have the best flavors. Here, taste.” “I don’t wanna taste that nasty stuff!” “I’ll taste! C’mere Mel, pucker up,” Christian said. “I meant from the tube, perv.”
12. Christian grimaced. He’d meant to sound, well, flirty, he supposed. He bit his lip. God, Melanie would never like him the way he worshipped her. The bell rang for lunch and the students rushed out.
13. Melanie got to lunch before everyone else, and grabbed a table. She looked around for a familiar face. There was no one she knew here right now. She sat eating in silence until a voice sounded in front of her. “Anyone sitting here?”
14. She looked up and saw a cute guy standing in front of her, grinning mischievously. He had red-brown hair and looked about 16 or 17. “Um…no…”
15. He sat down and smiled at her. “So,” he said. “why’re you sitting all alone? Where are your girlfriends?” He emphasized the word girlfriends with a tone usually meant to mock. Somehow, though, Melanie knew he was just playfully teasing.
16. “They’re not here yet,” she said smiling shyly back at him. “So what’s your name?” he asked. “Melanie,” she replied. “Melanie. I like that. I’m Dean. You a freshman?” “Yeah. Is it really obvious?” “Kinda, sweetie. You look so innocent.” “How so? Won’t I look the same in 4 years?”
17. He gave a short, derisive laugh. “No! Believe me, if you’re at this high school all four years, you’ll get in some kind of trouble sooner or later. We have a horrible reputation for turning out druggies, teen moms, and various other “I’ve done it all” types.” “I doubt I’ll be any of those,” she said, laughing. “As you say…” he said indulgently.
18. After talking to Melanie about various things for 45 minutes, Dean stood up and pushed in his chair. “What class do you have next, Melanie?” “Biology, with Ms. Terrance.” “Cool. Me too.” “Wait, what grade are you in?” Melanie asked. “12th, why?” “You’re a senior and you’re taking Biology? Shouldn’t you have taken that 3 years ago?”
19. “Maybe I got held back in that particular class a couple times. See you later, Mels.” He finger-gunned her.
20. Melanie watched him walk out. She wasn’t sure how she felt about him, but she knew she hadn’t had this feeling before.
21. Melanie got up and walked out of the cafeteria. She turned the corner and ran into Angelina. “Ouch, Ang, watch where you stand.” “So?” Angelina said. “So…what?” Melanie replied, confused. “So, who was that guy?” “What the hell? You weren’t even AT lunch and you already know my business?” “Ahem, I WAS there, I was just observing your first conversation with an upperclassman from a distance.”
22. “Oh my God, you’re such a creeper, Ang.” “I am not! Mallory said it was perfectly okay to intensely watch you eat and talk.” “Mal TOO?” “Don’t change the subject! Who is he?”
23. “Whatever! Fine! His name is Dean, he’s a senior, and he’s in my Biology class next period.” “Wait, he’s a senior and he’s taking Biology?” “Yeah, he failed a couple times.” “Wow. He’s a winner.” “Shut up. It’s not like I’m looking to spend the rest of my life with him.” “Yeah, but-” “I gotta go to class. Bye!”
24. Melanie walked to Biology and sat down. She got her books out and looked around for Dean.
25. She found him at the front of the classroom looking bored. When she looked at him, her stomach gave an unfamiliar lurch and she felt like smiling. Rather than smiling, however, she frowned. She was NOT allowed to crush on him. She forbade herself to have ANY feelings for this guy she met 45 minutes ago. She tore her eyes away quickly and instead focused on the teacher, who was now calling out role.
26. “Okay, next…Melanie?” Ms. Terrance called out. “Here,” Melanie called out. “Okay…Dean’s here…” “Wait, how did you already know I was here, Ms. Terrance?” she heard Dean ask. “Dean, honey, I’ve been around you constantly for 3 years now. I can now feel and recognize your mere presence, unfortunately.” “You know you love me Ms. Terrance.”
27. After school, Melanie and Angelina walked home together. “So, Mel, how do you like high school?” “Oh, Ang, do we really have to talk about school? It’s such a lovely day…” “Don’t pull that crap with me, Mel. You LOVE high school, don’t you? Yeah, sitting with Dean in Biology all year will be a BLAST,” Angelina laughed.
28. Melanie nearly growled. “Ang, how many times do I have to tell you? I’d never think of Dean as more than a casual friend.” Melanie’s words were belied by the swooping sensation her stomach gave when she heard his name. “Mmhmm…sure…” “Oh, shut up.”
29. Melanie went home after a couple hours at Angelina’s place, and found supper waiting for her. She took her place and started eating. “So, Mel, how was school?” her mother asked. “It was fine, Mom. Just your usual first day.” “Yes, but this was your first day of HIGH school.” “Still. No different.”
30. “Really Mel? You didn’t have any interesting classes? Did you find your way around okay? Did you meet anyone interesting?”
31. Melanie instantly thought of Dean. She felt like laughing that he should fall under the category of ‘interesting’, but kept her face impassive. “Um. No. Look, it’s late. I’m gonna go take a shower and get to bed early.” She wanted to be alone in her room for a while to think about Dean and what she would say to him tomorrow…she wanted to think of something funny and witty to say…
32. “Oh. Well, okay, honey. Good night.” “Good night, Mel.” She stood up and grinned at her parents. “G’night, Mom, Daddy.”
33. Melanie got into bed after her shower and after texting Angelina for a while. She was nervous and excited for tomorrow, when she would see Dean again.
34. She laid down and fell asleep almost instantly. In such a deep sleep, one would expect to have no dreams. Melanie did, however…
35. Melanie stood in a forest, surrounded by rose bushes and dressed in a purple velvet medieval-style dress. She was waiting for someone, anxious that they wouldn’t show up.
36. He did come, though. It was Dean. He smiled tenderly and walked up to her. “My love…” he whispered, kissing her hand. “You did keep your promise in meeting me here.”
37. “Certes, love! How could you ever think I would miss a chance to see you?” she replied. “I am a fool, my heart. That be it,” he replied with a smile on his mouth. He reached out and stroked her cheek. She turned her head and kissed his palm. “No…you are my life,” she contradicted him.
38. He drew her close to him and kissed her. “I do love you so,” he told her. “And I love you, my lord,” she replied.
39. “I’ve a question to ask you, love,” he said. “Of course, my heart, you may ask me anything,” she replied. He knelt down. “Mon cherie, I know your father probably already has plans for your marriage, but let’s call his bluff…”
42. They lay down on the pine needles and watched the stars together. Back in her bed, Melanie was smiling in her sleep. *******************************
