Signal Filtering
Introduction
• Most of the signals we deal with in real life get
corrupted in some way or another by some
unwanted signals.
• For the purpose of signal processing and
analysis, it is imperative to get rid of these
interferences, or at least reduce their effects.
• This is achieved through applying Signal
Filtering techniques.
What are filters?
• A Filter is an electronic circuit that
removes/attenuates, from a signal, some
unwanted component or feature.
Common used terms
• Cut off frequency : this is the frequency that
define the limits of the filter range.
• Stop band : The range of frequencies that is
filtered out
• Pass band : The range of frequencies which is let
through and recorded
• Transistion band : region that separates the
passband and stopband
Types of filters
Less accuracy
Non-Linear Phase
Adaptive Filters Difficult
Analog filters required at high frequencies
No ADC,DAC or DSP required.

High Accuracy
Linear Phase (FIR Filters)
Flexible, Adaptive Filtering Possible
Easy to Simulate and Design
Requires High Performance ADC,DAC & DSP
Digital Filters
Linear time invariant filters
A class of linear filters whose behavior does not
change over time
Linearity implies that the filter meets the scaling
and superposition properties
Two types
• 1.FIR filter
-Operates only on previous values of the input
• 2.IIR filter
-Operates on previous values of input and output
Filters on the basis of structure
• Direct form
• Cascade form
• Parallel form
Filter Application
• Eliminate background noise
• Radio tuning to a specific frequency
• Direct particular frequencies to different
speakers
• Modify digital images
• Remove specific frequencies in data analysis

Signal Filtering Techniques Explained

  • 2. Introduction • Most of the signals we deal with in real life get corrupted in some way or another by some unwanted signals. • For the purpose of signal processing and analysis, it is imperative to get rid of these interferences, or at least reduce their effects. • This is achieved through applying Signal Filtering techniques.
  • 3. What are filters? • A Filter is an electronic circuit that removes/attenuates, from a signal, some unwanted component or feature.
  • 4. Common used terms • Cut off frequency : this is the frequency that define the limits of the filter range. • Stop band : The range of frequencies that is filtered out • Pass band : The range of frequencies which is let through and recorded • Transistion band : region that separates the passband and stopband
  • 5. Types of filters Less accuracy Non-Linear Phase Adaptive Filters Difficult Analog filters required at high frequencies No ADC,DAC or DSP required. Analog filters
  • 6. High Accuracy Linear Phase (FIR Filters) Flexible, Adaptive Filtering Possible Easy to Simulate and Design Requires High Performance ADC,DAC & DSP Digital Filters

Linear time invariant filters A class of linear filters whose behavior does not change over time Linearity implies that the filter meets the scaling and superposition properties Two types • 1.FIR filter -Operates only on previous values of the input • 2.IIR filter -Operates on previous values of input and output

  • 11. Filter Application • Eliminate background noise • Radio tuning to a specific frequency • Direct particular frequencies to different speakers • Modify digital images • Remove specific frequencies in data analysis
