H:\2010 web updates\maternity tour3

Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. Welcome to Sibley Hospital. Introduction of self and welcome. Refer to maternity tour information sheet in folder Remind participants that this is a facility tour and if have specific questions please refer to the appropriate phone numbers on the reference sheet in their folder. Always call you physician prior to coming to the hospital. The doctor will tell you when to come to the hospital. If you are unable to call the physician due to an emergency, please inform the admission’s clerk as soon as you arrive. The physician calls Labor and Delivery to tell them you are coming and then they call the admissions department. Everyone then knows to expect you!
  2. Entering the hospital- All door to the hospital are open 5:30am – 9:00pm (Need to change this for H1N1 stuff) Between the hours of 9:00pm and 5:30am only the ER doors are open Families see the security officer in the ER to be escorted to the Family center units after hours.
  3. The volunteer desk may assist you with questions that you may have pertaining to Sibley Hospital. Volunteers are not always in attendance at the desk.
  4. You must stop at the Admissions desk to sign all necessary forms before going upstairs to the 3 rd floor. ( L&D.) If you have an advanced directive, bring it with you. You will receive an identification band around your wrist. If you feel you must go to L&D, go there first, but your significant other may need to return to admissions after you are settled in the room.
  5. Admissions department will transfer you to L&D by wheelchair or walking, whichever the patient can do. Use main elevators. Describe layout of floors and how to enter them. Families may wait in lobby area while patient is in labor
  6. All nurses working on the obstetrical units wear light green uniforms. This is a security measure. This will differentiate them from the rest of the hospital. Only people wearing green scrubs and green name tags, are able to handle babies. All babies will be transported in their crib. All staff associated with the OB department have a green badge with a green line going through it. This also is different from the rest of the hospital.
  7. The mother stays in the same room for labor, delivery and recovery, unless she has a c/section or difficult delivery which would require her to be moved to the delivery room. All of the rooms have bathrooms and showers. There are two triage rooms available to check patient’s labor status and for c/section admission and recovery. The room contains a adjustable bed, a fetal monitor, IV pump, and wall unit with the instruments for delivery. Mother can receive anesthesia in this room Anesthesiologists are in the hospital 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for epidurals and csections. Partners stay with the mother throughout the entire labor. Other visitors is between patient and doctor. Maximum should be 2 at a time. If there is c section or difficult delivery, the mother is moved to the delivery room then back to the triage rooms. The labor and delivery nurse assesses and cares for the mother during this time.
  8. The baby assessment table and scale are also in the labor room. The baby stays with the mother and father for the recovery period which is approximately 2 hours after delivery no matter what type of delivery. A neonatal assessment nurse (NAN) from the SCN will assess the baby and provide care during this time. The baby will stay with the parents and the baby will move to postpartum with the mother. If the baby is having medical difficulties, the baby will be taken t the Special Care Nursery. Baby identification bands will be placed on the baby and the parents in the birth room before the baby leaves the room. One band on mother, one on partner, and two on baby – arm and leg. Identification is important. The same bold number is on the bands of the baby, mother and partner. The nurse should confirm the number EVERY time the baby is brought to the parents. Green is the color of security. Only employees with green scrubs and badges may handle babies. Babies ALWAYS travel outside the parents room in the assigned bassinet. Do not wonder out of the room with the baby in your arms. That is an alarm to all the staff. Bands are not to be removed during the hospital stay.
  9. The obstetric operating room is an efficient, sterile room where mothers are taken to have their baby by cesarean section. The mother will be attended by her physician, obstetric nurses, anesthesia and neonatology. Following the cesarean process, the mother is taken to the triage room for recovery. The mother will be transported by stretcher to her postpartum room following the recovery period.
  10. After hours, families, must see security officer in the ER to be escorted to the unit. They will be given a visitor pass. (This is only after 9:00PM)
  11. Special Care Nursery: It is for babies with special or intensive care needs. Level II special care nursery (babies 32 weeks for singletons and above or 34 weeks for multiples and up) Blinds will be down for privacy and confidentiality (HIPPA) Parents have open visitation.
  12. There are 11 Private rooms and 4 semi-private rooms in the 3 West wing. For security reasons all postpartum units are locked and video taped. To enter, ring the door bell and a staff member will release the door so that you can come in. Another security measure is that every bag big enough to hold a baby, must be inspected by a staff member prior to leaving the unit. Please tell your guests to expect for their bags to be checked.
  13. There are 14 Private rooms in the 3 East wing. This unit is also locked.
  14. 7 West
  15. This is a private post partum room on the third floor. You will be moved here from the Labor suite either in a wheel chair or bed depending on type of delivery. You are encouraged to ask all staff members to wash their hands so that you can watch them.
  16. An admission packet is given to each mother upon arriving on the postpartum floor. It contains important information about the birth certificate, social security number, and testing information for the baby. Encourage the parents to look at the folder soon after they have arrived in their room. Birth certificate information will need to be filled out while in the hospital. The certificate will not automatically be mailed, you will need to request a copy, with fee, from the Bureau of vital statistics in the District of Columbia. The cafeteria is open during the day at select times. Parents may order carry out as well. Dietary will send menus to be filled out. Any special dietary requests will need to be directed to the dietary department as well as to the staff nurse.
  17. All three nursing units have nurses stations. A nourishment center is located in each station. Juice, crackers, coffee are available. Nurses will be available to assist you in the event you have questions while in the hospital.
  18. There is a normal newborn nursery on both units. Babies can stay in the mother’s room as little or as much as you like. Mothers may send their babies to the nursery as needed. All postpartum units are locked and video taped for security purposes. Babies usually go to the nursery for physicals, procedures such as circumcisions and hearing screening.
  19. The Women and Infant’s Services nursing staff is professional and caring. The goal of the department is to provide our mothers and babies with the highest quality care while meeting the individual needs of each patient and family.
  20. Lactation Suite – Room 304 on east side. Lactation consultants round on breastfeeding mothers seven (7) days a week. They are available to assist mother’s and babies who are having breastfeeding difficulties. The nurse caring for the patient is expected to assist the mother with normal positioning and latching. The nurse or physician will refer the mother to the lactation consultant if problems are occurring. A breastfeeding class is offered every day at 11:00am in the conference room in the lobby of the 3 rd floor.
  21. Lactation Services offers a variety breast feeding bras, breast pumps and breast feeding supplies for sale. A representative from the Lactation department will be available to help you with a selection of items suited to your needs. Outpatient lactation visits are available for those mothers and babies having difficulty with breast feeding following discharge. Each visit is a personalized session with one of our Certified Lactation Consultants. Follow up visits are often encouraged to assure that the baby is growing and gaining appropriately. This fee for service program is available weekdays by appointment.
  22. This is the main entrance of the hospital. Upon discharge, pull the car to the curb to meet the staff person who is pushing the mother and baby out of the hospital.
  23. Have patients fill out evaluations and give them to you. Thank them for their interest in Sibley. We would like to assist them in any way that we can. If they have specific questions, refer to resource list of numbers that they can call to assist them. AGAIN, THANKS TO EACH OF YOU FOR DOING SUCH A GREAT JOB!!! Revised 03/30/08
