3. Library Catalogs & Discovery
“… Today, a large and growing
number of students and scholars
routinely bypass library catalogs in
favor of other discovery tools”
How can we synthesize and present content
that is not related in the catalog?
Calhoun, Karen S. "The changing nature of the catalog and its integration with other discovery tools." Library of Congress, 2006.
4. Geocoding: What is it?
Geocoding
The process of associating
data with location.
What Kind of Data?

• Text
• Media
• Almost Anything
Geocoder

Step 3. Construct a Link
<a href= “www.lib.unc.edu.etc…” target=blank_> Linking Word(s) </a>
1. Opening tag
2. URL you just copied
3. Location of New Page
4. Word that will show on the map
5. Closing tag

One case in which a public library loaded all their patron’s addresses into a geocoder to find the distribution of patron locations in order to choose the best location for a new library branch.
ArcGIS Explorer Online used to make this map. Here is a map depicting Cardiovascular Disease and Income in North Carolina:(notethatyouwillneed to open the legend using the control on the leftside of the page) A map likethisis the end result of anexercise I designed with a professor in the GeographyDepartment. The studentswereundergraduates with no GIS experience. Because the online applicationdoes not have the option to geocode to countyboundaries, I preparedsome data in advance (lat/longcoordinates for countycentroids), but the rest was fairlystraightforward and could be done by someone with little to no GIS experience.
