Sedo‘s Domain Market Study
3rd Quarter 2010
Overall, 10,085 domains changed hands for 20,507,143 USD in Q3 2010 through Sedo’s
marketplace. Domain sales continue to remain steady and a viable investment option, with year
over year sales and volume of sales results further demonstrating the strength of domains as
long term investments. From small businesses to serious portfolio owners, quarter over quarter,
domains are proving to be one of the most solid, accessible and safe investment options for
both large and small investors.

This study will continue to review trends and changes in the domain market in Q3 2010,
as represented by the Sedo Marketplace.

1. Division of Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) Sales
The .com extension remains the most popular top-level domain extension, accounting for 74%
of all gTLD sales. Overall, the sales have remained consistent from Q2 2010 across all gTLDs.

                                                                         gTLD Sales

2. Division of Top 10 Country Code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD) Sales
The .de and .co.uk extensions remain the most popular ccTLDs at Sedo, with .eu not far behind.
The .de extension now claims more than half of the market share for all ccTLDs in Q3 2010. The
popularity of the .co.uk extension has slightly increased, as compared with Q2 2010. Like with
gTLDs in Q3 2010, the division of sales has remained consistent over the past 6 months of 2010.

                                                                        ccTLD Sales

4. Division of Sales per Quarter
Overall 2010 has provided strong and steady sales. While Q3 2010 resulted in a decrease
of 9.5% from Q2 2010, the sales per quarter are higher than Q3 2009, further demonstrating
the steady year over year increase in overall domain investments. Even though there was
a decrease in sales from Q2 2010, we must factor in the greater number of auction events
in Q2, which may be responsible for the higher sales volume quarter over quarter.

In addition, the .info extension experienced it’s most profitable sales quarter in more than
a year.

The median sales prices for gtlds tend to remain more consistent and serve as good indicators
of the sales price for the majority of domain sales sold quarter over quarter. Below is a review of
the median sales prices for gTLDs. All median sales prices have increased from Q2 2010 to Q3
2010, showing steady marketplace activity as we head into 2011.

11. Looking Forward
Q3 2010 demonstrated a good overview of where certain market trends are heading. The
Sedo sales and marketing teams spent a good portion of Q3 working on developing sales
opportunities, and the results of these efforts will most likely be reflected in the sales growth
in the Q4 2010 domain market study. With that in mind, we expect the increased interest in
ccTLDs and gTLDs to continue throughout Q4 2010 and into 2011. Overall, the Sedo market-
place is expected to continue demonstrating sales growth of fixed priced domains and ccTLDs.
As the general public, including small and medium sized business owners, becomes more
aware of the value of domain names, we are confident that the end-user sales trend will
continue to grow, moving forward into 2011.

2010 Q3 Sedo Domain Market Study

  • 1. Sedo‘s Domain Market Study 3rd Quarter 2010
  • 2. Overall, 10,085 domains changed hands for 20,507,143 USD in Q3 2010 through Sedo’s marketplace. Domain sales continue to remain steady and a viable investment option, with year over year sales and volume of sales results further demonstrating the strength of domains as long term investments. From small businesses to serious portfolio owners, quarter over quarter, domains are proving to be one of the most solid, accessible and safe investment options for both large and small investors. This study will continue to review trends and changes in the domain market in Q3 2010, as represented by the Sedo Marketplace. 1. Division of Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) Sales The .com extension remains the most popular top-level domain extension, accounting for 74% of all gTLD sales. Overall, the sales have remained consistent from Q2 2010 across all gTLDs. gTLD Sales 8% 11% © Sedo, 2010 © Sedo, 2010 :: www.Sedo.com
  • 3. 2. Division of Top 10 Country Code Top-Level Domain (ccTLD) Sales The .de and .co.uk extensions remain the most popular ccTLDs at Sedo, with .eu not far behind. The .de extension now claims more than half of the market share for all ccTLDs in Q3 2010. The popularity of the .co.uk extension has slightly increased, as compared with Q2 2010. Like with gTLDs in Q3 2010, the division of sales has remained consistent over the past 6 months of 2010. ccTLD Sales 2% 2% 3% 3% 3% Domains 4% .de 4% .co.uk .eu 52% .es 13% .tv .nl .at .ch 14% .fr .in © Sedo, 2010 © Sedo, 2010 :: www.Sedo.com
  • 4. 3. Division of Sales Volume per Quarter The graph demonstrates the sales volume spanning from Q2 2009 through Q3 2010. Though Q3 2010 saw a slight decrease in the number of sales from Q2 2010, the overall sales volume has remained stable since Q3 2009. 25,000,000 $ 23,177,253 23,014,162 21,568,780 21,495,068 20,507,143 20,000,000 $ 15,000,000 $ 14,728,188 10,000,000 $ 5,000,000 $ 0$ Q2 Q3 Q4 Q1 Q2 Q3 2009 2009 2009 2010 2010 2010 © Sedo, 2010 © Sedo, 2010 :: www.Sedo.com
  • 5. 4. Division of Sales per Quarter Overall 2010 has provided strong and steady sales. While Q3 2010 resulted in a decrease of 9.5% from Q2 2010, the sales per quarter are higher than Q3 2009, further demonstrating the steady year over year increase in overall domain investments. Even though there was a decrease in sales from Q2 2010, we must factor in the greater number of auction events in Q2, which may be responsible for the higher sales volume quarter over quarter. 12,000 11,942 11,146 10,085 10,070 10,000 9,403 9,928 8,000 6,000 4,000 2,000 Q2 Q3 Q4 Q1 Q2 Q3 0 2009 2009 2009 2010 2010 2010 © Sedo, 2010 © Sedo, 2010 :: www.Sedo.com
  • 6. 5. Division of Sales Type Below is a breakdown of the ways in which domains were sold on the Sedo marketplace in Q2 2010. Offer-Counteroffer sales remain the most prominent sales type, representing 42% of sales in Q3 2010. Fixed price domain sales have been growing each quarter since Q1 2010,and have increaded 3% in popularity from Q2 2010 to Q3 2010. 2% 4% Division of Sales Type 5% 19% 42% Offer - Counteroffer Fixed Price Marketplace Auctions Auction Events 28% Brokerage External Transfers © Sedo, 2010 © Sedo, 2010 :: www.Sedo.com
  • 7. 6. Number and Price Comparison (gTLDs) While the average sales prices for .com and .net domains remain on a steady upswing, the .org, .info, and .biz extensions witnessed somewhat significant spikes in sales activity in Q3. In addition, the .info extension experienced it’s most profitable sales quarter in more than a year. • 10. 11. Looking Forward Q3 2010 demonstrated a good overview of where certain market trends are heading. The Sedo sales and marketing teams spent a good portion of Q3 working on developing sales opportunities, and the results of these efforts will most likely be reflected in the sales growth in the Q4 2010 domain market study. With that in mind, we expect the increased interest in ccTLDs and gTLDs to continue throughout Q4 2010 and into 2011. Overall, the Sedo market- place is expected to continue demonstrating sales growth of fixed priced domains and ccTLDs. As the general public, including small and medium sized business owners, becomes more aware of the value of domain names, we are confident that the end-user sales trend will continue to grow, moving forward into 2011. © Sedo, 2010 :: www.Sedo.com
