Originally conceived in 1988 by Sassone Franco and inspired in the re-use of broken surfboards that
washed ashore as consequence from the ill force of the waves; the transformation of the broken piece into a
functional object is the result of a personal passion for the sport and a formal education in design, which
somehow, fusions this particular bond in an emulating profound sense of nostalgia.
AQUASELLAS is the corollary of meticulous research and investigation of the surfboard for its historical,
cultural and aesthetic value; in conjunction with an in-depth design analysis on anthropometrics and ergonomic
theories.
The beauty of AQUASELLAS relies on the simplicity of its transformation thus maintaining the basic
recognizable forms proper of the function it represents; true to its shape and authentic to the sensibility of its
lines, dimensions, proportions and finishing textures.
The conversion becomes apparent when a full shaped surfboard is sliced in half and the back end is fed
into its front counterpart through a preconceived cavity. To counter-set the cantilever overhang in the front of
the seat, and prevent it from tipping over, strong lateral supports are introduced in the shape of abstract
waves as if frozen in time. The resulting solution is a rigid and unimaginable comfortable piece, hence the
established reclined angles between the two planes when summed up to the natural curves of the surfboard
guide the shape of the human body into a comfortable seating posture.
AQUASELLAS not only embraces a retrospective style of design and promotes a specific function, but
relies its singular appearance upon a central theme as well.
AQUASELLAS is offered in Solid Wood and Wood Veneer “Limited Edition” collections. It comes
unassembled and it’s easily put together. All “Limited Edition” series are manufactured utilizing the best and
finest materials available; produced under strict norms of quality control and supervised throughout its
fabrication process. It is then, that in the final stages, each piece is coded and autographed as testimony to the
authenticity, prestige and originality of these exclusive one of a kind chair designs.
Conscious of the international agreements against illegal deforestation, no endangered species are
specified nor employed in the manufacturing of these chairs.
This creation has not only set a peculiar and distinctive mark amongst the most influential trade leaders
in the surf industry whom awarded it as being one of the 10 best products of 2006 during SURF EXPO; but
have also been praised by living legends and past heroes in surfing’s history and surfboard evolution who were
greatly impressed when first exposed to the chairs. In fact, ISA’s President Fernando Aguerre who owns an
autographed chair signed by Sofia Mulanovich has donated it to be included in the Argentinian Museum of Surf.
Whatever their use, placing and/or application, AQUASELLAS are becoming much sought after collectible pieces.
