My (introductory) half of a workshop aimed at postgraduate students interested in creating and adapting teaching materials for sharing. This presentation was to introduce the concept of open education and OERs. (Please note: I have provided links to the two videos, not embedded them, please watch them via the links.)

Intro
The purpose of this week is to raise awareness about open education and what it can do for students, teachers and lecturers across the world! You can find out more at openeducationweek.org.
So, what is open education?
A video created by Blink tower, a local Cape Town based animation firm, that won 1st place in a competition to describe why open education matters… this video covers the basics of open education.
(Please use the link to access the video: http://vimeo.com/43401199 )
So, as the video highlighted, open education is about creating opportunities for learning and promoting the sharing of resources to help everyone have access to learning materials.
Basically, its all about removing barriers to accessing education
These barriers can be overcome by technology, networks and sharing of resources and licenses allowing reuse of existing materials. Open + technology + (connected + sharing) + reuse
So, know you have a bit of a better idea as to what open education is, what do you think OERs are?
Student feedback…
What are open educational resources?
How can they be used?
What do you know about them?
Have you used them?
Etc.
In 2012, the Paris Declaration defined OERs as…
So, OERs can include…
Much of what I’ve already said hints at the importance of OERs
Another video from the Why open education matters competition, shows why its important to share content and introduces a bit about the licensing of content.
(Please use link to access the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_655666&feature=iv&src_vid=dTNnxPcY49Q&v=7NH7vLzt9jY )
OERs are used by many open courseware providers around the globe, some of which you’ll be familiar with, such as Khan academy, flat world knowledge and South Africa’s own Siyavula
Now, at UCT, we have our own site dedicated to open content produced by UCT staff (and students). UCT OpenContent showcases openly licensed outputs from all the faculties across the university. If you’ve applied to contribute a resource, this is where your resource will be showcased when its completed.
UCTs OpenContent includes some award winning resources such as this Occupational Therapy resource contributed by Matumo Ramafikeng. This is the complete course material for the Occupation Focused Conceptual Frameworks.
This resource won an OpenCourseware excellence award.
And this resource was discovered, translated into Spanish and published in a journal. The licensing of the original resource made this possible.
Many different types: Warning educational materials, audio lectures and collections
All of the resources on UCT OpenContent are accessible to anyone with an internet connection and a device to access the site from anywhere around the world. Through staff and students sharing their content, we’re hoping to provide access to the excellent materials produced at UCT to as wide an audience as possible.
So, to get some insight into why you’re here, I want to ask:
Student input and discussion…
Help change this
Into this!
By contributing a resource or even just spreading the message about OERs and what they can do you can help
people realise the power of OERs fro themselves and others and improve access to education around the globe.
