Thank you for joining me today as I would like to present you my image manipulation portfolio.
This presentation will cover all of these topics which are listed, they may seem to be a lot, however, most are just before and after photos. Software used to manipulate these images were done on Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended.
Moving on, I had also created a website portfolio of most of the images used to create these complex manipulated pictures. There is also a comment and like section for feedback, which is welcome.
This is an image of a snake which I intend to morph, the idea is to replace its head with the t-rex.The image of the head was taken from the school intranet, listed under the science category. The snake was taken off the internet.
The head of the snake has been erased in Photoshop by using the magic wand tool. I then duplicated the T-Rex layer into this snake image document and then cloned it to where the head was removed. I also applied the same technique to add scales to its texture. By doing this, it has increased the realism of the overall image.
These are three examples of my recently morphed image using filters, the one on the left is a perfect balance of a filter being used for my morphed image. It is now like a professional image which you would see in a magazine or poster, the other two were experiments which had looked seemingly good. Applying filters to photos is just two clicks on Adobe Photoshop, there is a dedicated filters tab on the window itself.
Using multiple images, such as these three, I am able to create one image all together by merging their layers. My plan was to have an energy drink sink into a water drop which has clouds as the background. The cloud and the redbull images were scanned from a magazine, the water drop is from the internet.
I have successfully used multiple images to merge all layers to create one whole separate image. As intended, the redbull does give the illusion of it being dumped into the water and I have successfully replaced the black background clouds. Opening the images in Photoshop results in creating new documents for each of the images, for each document, there is one layer of the main image that has been opened. I simply duplicated the main layer from one of the documents into the water drop document, I used this method to merge all layers. Creating the effect was a matter of setting the layer properties to ‘colour dodge’ in the redbull layer. I used a transparent gradient to fade the clouds and lowered the opacity a bit so that it blends with the overall image.
This is an image of the moon which I had retrieved from the school intranet library, the one on the right is the default image that I had obtained, I then masked the image with the black background because I did not want the black background as shown. To create a path I must first mask the image, I have done so by using the pen tool in Photoshop. I was then able to trace the image in precision so that I can cut out the moon later.
This is an image which I have scanned from a Top Gear magazine, I will be adding photo enhancements to this image. Photo Enhancements are required to restore an image which may not contain enough colour or lacks detail. To restore an image by enhancing it, you will need to adjust the colour attributes to a perfect balance point which you then would think suits the image best. Image lacks vibrancy and colour. It has no life.
The picture is now full of colour, the grass and roads are much more detailed as everything has become much more vibrant than before. I had done this by adjusting various colour attributes such as the colour curves and vibrancy/saturation properties.
I will now be presenting you with the text juxtaposition and superimposition technique, this is an image of a wolf shaded in black that I had obtained over the internet. Juxtaposition of text in images is text which are located just outside of the picture. As you can see, I had added the text ‘WOLF MOON’ under the main image, to do this I simply had to use the text tool in Photoshop.
Superimposition of text within images are text which are located within the picture itself. For example, you can see the text ‘WOLF MOON’ is now located within the main image instead of being outside of it, once again I had only used the text tool in Photoshop to achieve this.
I had obtained this image of the sunset from the internet, I will be adding the noise effect to this image to give it that grainy ‘film’ look to the overall image.
As you can see, the image is now grainy and has given it that film look, adding the noise effect was a filter effect in Photoshop, I simply went on the filters tab and added noise from there on out.
Noise can become quite frustrating to look at, especially if you want a clear nightime picture like this one. This image was taken from my camera phone, the quality may not be the best. However, by reducing the noise in this image, the quality will improve slightly.
The grain in the darker areas have now blended with the sky and the image now appears to be much better in terms of quality and appearance. To reduce noise from an image, I simply clicked the filter tab, then scrolled down to ‘Noise’ and selected ‘Reduce Noise’.
This image of a heart engraved in snow was taken from the internet, I will be colouring in the hear by using the lasso technique.The lasso is a tool which is used to create paths of an image, similar to masking but slightly different. The lasso can be used to change a certain colour of a part of an image, it is all down to where the user would like to change the colour of an image.
With the lasso tool I was able to create a path of an image easily by drawing around a section of an image that I would like to edit/modify. I was then able to fill in the area with another colour. The love heart engraved in the snow is now pink.
Image for this was taken from the internet, I will be applying the feathering technique to this image.
By selecting an area of an image, whether it being by using the lasso tool to create a selection or creating masks, Photoshop will always give me the option to add feathering once a path has been created. I had used the elliptical marquee tool to select the area of the image that I want to convert into a path to which I then feathered into the image you are viewing now.
See her spots and freckles?, I had gotten this image from the internet and will be healing & correcting patches so that these spots and freckles disappear. Most magazines use this technique as they don’t want their models to contain spots on the front cover for example.
To fix issues such as spots on a forehead, the healing technique is to clone the clean areas of the skin which then automatically heals and correct the spots which are exposed.Her spots are now gone and there is no clear indication that she ever had any in the first place. Photoshop includes a ‘Healing Brush Tool’ which is used to clone certain areas of an image by holding ALT+LeftMouseClick and is then used to replace the unwanted parts of an image, in this case, the spots.
Cloning images is can be used for healing and correcting patches for images, it can also be used to clone parts of an image to create the multiple of something. For example, this is an image of a flower that I had gotten from the website, I will be cloning the flower of this image so that it would look like there were multiple flowers in this picture.
Similar to the healing tool, I can select a specific area of an image to clone and then replace an area of the image which I’d like to clone. Clearly, the flower has been cloned and there are now multiple flowers within this image. Cloning is often used in magazines and other published documents to save time from having to hire extra people for a crowded image for example.
Palettes are used in Photoshop to save colours that you have gotten from an image by using the colour picker tool. As mentioned before, the image of the cloud was scanned from a magazine. The image on the right shows that I can select colours from the image by clicking on the image itself whilst the ‘Colour Picker’ window is open, it then saves into the ‘Colour Palettes’ box.
I can then save the colours into my palettes box that is just above the colour picker window shown in the previous slide, with my new colours in the palettes box I was able to create this new image from scratch by collecting the different colours from the cloud image demonstrated. There are other effects used in this picture such as lower opacity in some areas, out glow within the superimposition of text and so on.
As much as this image already looks beautiful as it is, to my taste it appears that there is too much purple. I had retrieved this image from the school intranet under the science category. The aim is to remove some of the purple midtones in this image.
The image now does not contain that much purple vibrancy as the original image used to have. The final image looks more natural this way by balancing out all of the colours. To change the colour balance I went into the layer tab in Photoshop, then selected new adjustment layer and it then gave me the option to change the overall colour balance all in one. There are also a lot of other methods to change the colour balance of an image by adjusting other attributes manually. However, I had used the all in one colour balance adjustment layer to achieve these results shown.
Sometimes images need to be sharpened to look better or to add detail, however, some images may be captured and would look appear too sharp to the user. I will be showing how to sharpen images that look too ‘soft’ and unsharpening images which are too ‘sharp’. The image of the bird is a scanned image from a wildlife magazine, the car on the right is taken from the internet. The image of the bird is too sharp, I will be softening this image, the image of the car is blurry, therefore, I will be sharpening it.
These are the final outcomes of both the images, I had unsharpened the image of the bird by going on the filter tab in Photoshop and by expanding the sharpen filter. With the Sharpen filter I am able to choose a wide range of other sharpening methods,including unsharpening images with the ‘Unsharp Mask’ filter. This was the filter that I have used to unsharpen the image of the bird. As for the car, I used the same filter technique but applied sharpening instead of the unsharp filter. Clearly, both images now look more natural as they have the perfect balance between each other.
In addition to the multiple images technique demonstration I had showed you earlier, I had used several other complex techniques to make the image look more unique and professional. Techniques used for this image were multiple images, filters, optical flares and super imposition of text. The final image now looks as if a magazine has published it for a promotional deal or something similar.
Moreover, I had used advanced cloning techniques to create this image. This is the image which I had demonstrated the healing & corrections technique with. I had applied other techniques to increase the professionalism by using, feathering, healing, filters, cloning and adjusting the colour balance. Again, this image would be suitable to print as a poster/flyer for a promotional event or similar.
For my final unique image, I will be applying all the techniques which I have presented today, this includes using several multiple images which had been obtained from a range of different sources. My goal was to create a high resolution desktop wallpaper for users which are interested in abstract mixed with realism art.
By using all of these images, I had created a professional desktop wallpaper that can be used publically if published on the internet. Clearly, the colours from the other images have all been adjusted to match the overall scene of this final unique image of mine. It is abstract art which includes reality and the overall atmosphere of living in another planet. Techniques used to create this image were, multiple images, colour balance/attributes, cloning, lasso, masks/paths, feathering, correcting patches, sharpening the rocks and softening the moon, super imposition of text, mixture of different opacity levels and finally optical flares.
