Themes of Chapter 6
• How Jesus Comes to Us
• How Jesus Wants Us to Come to Him
• A personal “trust” relationship with Jesus is the fundamental first
step.
• Out of this fundamental trusting relationship, good works of service
to others will flow.
The Feeding of the 5,000
• Only miracle recorded in all 4 Gospels
• Jesus uses this for teaching that He is the bread of life and the bread
of heaven
• Elisha had done a similar miracle of multiplying bread in 2 Kings 4:4244.
• Barley loaves were the cheapest bread available – the food of poor
people
• Barley loaves were small – size of Twinkies
John 6: 1-7
1 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of
Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people
followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing
the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with
his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near. 5 When Jesus
looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,
“Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this
only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to
buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
Philip Fails The Test
• Philip sees only the impossibility of the supply and financial situation.
• He forgets that Jesus is the miracle worker.
• He could not see past the logistical difficulties.
• He said, “Lord, I cannot see a solution to my problem.”
John 6: 8-11
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up,
9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but
how far will they go among so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people
sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down
(about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves,
gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as
they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
Andrew’s Solution
• Andrew offered a solution, but no faith, when he said, “What are
they among so many?”
• Jesus invites us to trust Him (faith) when we don’t have enough
“bread”. Allow Him to multiply it for us.
• Faith the size of a mustard seed.
John 6:12-15
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples,
“Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So
they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the
five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. 14 After the
people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is
the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 Jesus, knowing that
they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to
a mountain by himself.
The Wrong Kind of King
• Lunch discussion - people misinterpreted the miracle!
• Thought the 12 extra baskets of bread represented the 12 tribes of
Israel.
• Thought they had been fed “manna” like their forefathers.
• Thought Jesus was a Prophet like Moses who would free them from
tyranny (Roman rule).
• Jesus hides from the crowds.
Jesus Walks On Water
Jesus Walks On Water
• Jesus’ divine nature shown here.
• John does not record Peter’s episode.
• Jesus uses the Greek “ego eimi” I AM to identify Himself to the
disciples in the boat.
• He is using the divine name for Himself as when God spoke to Moses
(Exodus 3:14), I AM WHO I AM.
• “Don’t be afraid. It is I AM WHO I AM.”
John 6: 16-18
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where
they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now
it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was
blowing and the waters grew rough.
John 6: 19-21
19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus
approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened.
20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” 21 Then they were
willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached
the shore where they were heading.
• (I AM WHO I AM)
Jesus Walking On Water - Summary
• Jesus demonstrates His power over nature.
• Application for us:
• As soon as Jesus gets into the boat with us, the storms calm and we are not
afraid.
• He gets us through the darkness.
• He doesn’t always take the storms away, but He carries us through the storm.
John 6:22-24
22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of
the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had
not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone.
23 Then some boats from Tiberius landed near the place where the
people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 Once
the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they
got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
John 6:25-27
25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him,
“Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell
you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I
performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not
work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life,
which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has
placed his seal of approval.”
Jesus Answers Their 1st Question
When did you get here?
• The people had not seen the significance of the signs (miracles).
• They were chasing Jesus to be King because they had been physically
fed and seen miracles.
• The people saw the physical but missed the spiritual.
• Don’t spend your life on empty labor or pursuing that which has no
ultimate significance.
• Seek that which is eternal.
A Sealed Promise
John 6:27
John 6:27
“..God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
• The “Seal” indicates ownership.

Matthew 17:5
“… This is My beloved Son ...”
2 Cor. 1:21-22
Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He
anointed us, 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our
hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
The 2nd Question
John 6:28-29
28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God
requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in
the one he has sent.”
• A very “human” question….
• A simple and basic answer…
• “trust (believe)me” for salvation.
• Salvation is not by “works” we do for God.
More Questions…
John 6:30-34
30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it
and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in
the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to
eat.’ ” 32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who
has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you
the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that
comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 “Sir,” they
said, “always give us this bread.”
Summary
John 6:32-34
• The people asked for more “proof” or a bigger miracle than feeding
the 5,000.
• Jesus points out that the manna came from God and not Moses.
• Jesus says that the Father “gives” the true bread from Heaven (life
through the Son).
• “bread of God….comes down from heaven…” is repeated 6x in this
chapter of John
Jesus said, “I am the……….”

The Bread of Life
John 6: 35- 38
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me
will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.
37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes
to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven
not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.
John 6: 39- 40
39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all
those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my
Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him
shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
John 6:41-45
41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said,
“I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 they said, “Is this
not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How
can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?” 43 “Stop grumbling
among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me
unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at
the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by
God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes
to me.
John 6:46-48
46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only
he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes
has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life.
Theological Concepts in
John 6:39 - 65
• Perseverance of the Saints – Can you lose your salvation? – Once
saved, always saved!
39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all
those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my
Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him
shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
• This is a Baptist belief.
Controversy in
John 6: 37, 44 &65
37 “All those the Father gives me will come to me, ………”
44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws
them,……”
65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to
me unless the Father has enabled them.”
• What is the controversy in these verses?
• Free Will vs. Irresistible Grace(Unconditional Election)
Theological Concepts in John 6
• Free Will vs. Irresistible Grace(Unconditional Election)
• Free Will – God’s grace can be rejected through rebellion. Man can
choose to resist the calling from Jesus to come to Him.
• Irresistible Grace – God’s grace and calling cannot be resisted. If the
Father wants you to come to Christ, He will effectually draw you to
Jesus.
• Unconditional Election – God has unconditionally chosen some to be
saved and some to be lost.
What Do Baptists Believe?
• Free Will – Persons are free beings with the power of selfdetermination.
• Unlimited Atonement of Christ – Christ died for all.
John 3:16
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that
whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
• One Role of the Holy Spirit – Draw us to Jesus
Theology of Salvation (Frank Page)
• G – Grace is given through Christ.
• R – Grace may be rejected through rebellion.
• A – Grace can be accepted through faith.
• C – Grace means that Christ died for all.
• E – Grace ensures everlasting life.
G – Grace Is Given Through Christ
• God’s grace is God’s means of election.
John 5:24
24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who
sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over
from death to life.
R – Grace May Be Rejected Through Rebellion
• Man has the choice or free will.
Matt 7:13-14
13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is
the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But
small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few
find it.
A – Grace Can Be Accepted Through Faith
• Man has the freedom to accept Christ.
Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith —and this is not
from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one
can boast.
C – Grace Means That Christ Died For All
• Unlimited atonement of Jesus for all.
1 Timothy 2:3-4
3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to
be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
E – Grace Insures Everlasting Life
• Eternal Security or Perseverance of Saints
John 5:24
24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who
sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over
from death to life.
The Bread Sermon Continues…
John 6:49-52
49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.
50 But here is the bread that comes down (continually) from heaven,
which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came
down from heaven. Whoever eats (once) this bread will live forever.
This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can
this man give us his flesh to eat?”
John 6: 53 - 55
53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of
the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I
will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my
blood is real drink.
John 6:56-59
56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in
them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the
Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is
the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and
died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 He said this
while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Summary
John 6:49-59
• You must take all of Jesus, as if you were ingesting him!
• Jesus is also speaking of the Lord’s Supper or Eucharist instituted
before His death.
• He is NOT teaching the sacraments as a second way of salvation.
Luke 22:19 -20
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them,
saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup
is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you; do this
in remembrance of Me.”
John 6: 60 -65
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching.
Who can accept it?” 61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about
this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you
see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives
life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—
they are full of the Spirit and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do
not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them
did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, “This
is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has
enabled them.”
Why Is Jesus’ Teaching So Hard to Take?
• Constantly speaking of “coming down from heaven” (Jesus said this
6x in John 6)
• Constantly self-referring “I AM’s (ego eimi)
• Multiple references of “eating my flesh”
• The meal that satisfies forever – radical idea!
• Unable to accept change.
• Comfortable in their sins – not really!
• Your thoughts????
John 6:66-71
66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer
followed him. 67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked
the Twelve. 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we
go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe
and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” 70 Then Jesus replied,
“Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71 (He
meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the
Twelve, was later to betray him.)
Many Followers Leave
• Jesus’ bread sermon caused a massive loss of disciples.
• The major lesson in the defection of disciples is one word –
“Purification”.
• Others were not willing to commit.
Peter Says it Best!!
John 6:68-69
“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We
have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
Matthew 16: 15-16
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon
Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Take Home Message
John 6:29
29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he
has sent.”
• A personal “trust” relationship with Jesus is the first fundamental
step.
• Jesus satisfies our thirst and our hunger when we trust.
John 3:16 (KJV)
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life.

10 October 20, 2013, John 6;1-71, The Power To Meet Needs

  • 1. The Power To Meet Needs John 6:1-71 October 20, 2013 First Baptist Church Jackson, Mississippi USA
  • 3. REFERENCES • TROUBLE WITH THE TULIP: A Closer Examination of The Five Points of Calvinism by Dr. Frank S. Page • JOHN: St. Andrew’s Expositional Commentary by Dr. R. C. Sproul • THE GOSPEL OF JOHN: A Commentary by Dr. Frederick D. Brunner • The Baptist Faith and Message, Adopted 2000
  • 4. Summary Statement of Chapter 5 • The Father sent his Son to represent himself to us.
  • 5. Preview of Chapter 6 • Jesus Feeds the 5,000 • John 6:1-15 • Jesus Walks on Water • John 6:16-24 • Jesus as The Bread of Life • John 6:25-59 • Many Disciples Desert Jesus • John 6:60-71
  • 6. Themes of Chapter 6 • How Jesus Comes to Us • How Jesus Wants Us to Come to Him • A personal “trust” relationship with Jesus is the fundamental first step. • Out of this fundamental trusting relationship, good works of service to others will flow.
  • 7. The Feeding of the 5,000 • Only miracle recorded in all 4 Gospels • Jesus uses this for teaching that He is the bread of life and the bread of heaven • Elisha had done a similar miracle of multiplying bread in 2 Kings 4:4244. • Barley loaves were the cheapest bread available – the food of poor people • Barley loaves were small – size of Twinkies
  • 8. John 6: 1-7 1 Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Festival was near. 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”
  • 9. Philip Fails The Test • Philip sees only the impossibility of the supply and financial situation. • He forgets that Jesus is the miracle worker. • He could not see past the logistical difficulties. • He said, “Lord, I cannot see a solution to my problem.”
  • 10. John 6: 8-11 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
  • 11. Andrew’s Solution • Andrew offered a solution, but no faith, when he said, “What are they among so many?” • Jesus invites us to trust Him (faith) when we don’t have enough “bread”. Allow Him to multiply it for us. • Faith the size of a mustard seed.
  • 12. John 6:12-15 12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. 14 After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.
  • 13. The Wrong Kind of King • Lunch discussion - people misinterpreted the miracle! • Thought the 12 extra baskets of bread represented the 12 tribes of Israel. • Thought they had been fed “manna” like their forefathers. • Thought Jesus was a Prophet like Moses who would free them from tyranny (Roman rule). • Jesus hides from the crowds.
  • 14. Jesus Walks On Water
  • 15. Jesus Walks On Water • Jesus’ divine nature shown here. • John does not record Peter’s episode. • Jesus uses the Greek “ego eimi” I AM to identify Himself to the disciples in the boat. • He is using the divine name for Himself as when God spoke to Moses (Exodus 3:14), I AM WHO I AM. • “Don’t be afraid. It is I AM WHO I AM.”
  • 16. John 6: 16-18 16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, 17 where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. 18 A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough.
  • 17. John 6: 19-21 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” 21 Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading. • (I AM WHO I AM)
  • 18. Jesus Walking On Water - Summary • Jesus demonstrates His power over nature. • Application for us: • As soon as Jesus gets into the boat with us, the storms calm and we are not afraid. • He gets us through the darkness. • He doesn’t always take the storms away, but He carries us through the storm.
  • 19. John 6:22-24 22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. 23 Then some boats from Tiberius landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
  • 20. John 6:25-27 25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
  • 21. Jesus Answers Their 1st Question When did you get here? • The people had not seen the significance of the signs (miracles). • They were chasing Jesus to be King because they had been physically fed and seen miracles. • The people saw the physical but missed the spiritual. • Don’t spend your life on empty labor or pursuing that which has no ultimate significance. • Seek that which is eternal.
  • 22. A Sealed Promise John 6:27 John 6:27 “..God the Father has set His seal on Him.” • The “Seal” indicates ownership. Matthew 17:5 “… This is My beloved Son ...” 2 Cor. 1:21-22 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
  • 23. The 2nd Question John 6:28-29 28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” • A very “human” question…. • A simple and basic answer… • “trust (believe)me” for salvation. • Salvation is not by “works” we do for God.
  • 24. More Questions… John 6:30-34 30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ” 32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
  • 25. Summary John 6:32-34 • The people asked for more “proof” or a bigger miracle than feeding the 5,000. • Jesus points out that the manna came from God and not Moses. • Jesus says that the Father “gives” the true bread from Heaven (life through the Son). • “bread of God….comes down from heaven…” is repeated 6x in this chapter of John
  • 26. Jesus said, “I am the……….” 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. The Bread of Life. John 6:35, 41, 48, 51 The Light of the World. John 8:12; 9:5 The Gate for the Sheep. John 10:7, 9 The Good Shepherd. John 10:11, 14 The Resurrection and the Life. John 11:25 The Way, the Truth, and the Life. John 14:6 The True Vine. John 15:1, 5
  • 27. The Bread of Life John 6: 35- 38 35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.
  • 28. John 6: 39- 40 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
  • 29. John 6:41-45 41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 they said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?” 43 “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me.
  • 30. John 6:46-48 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life.
  • 31. Theological Concepts in John 6:39 - 65 • Perseverance of the Saints – Can you lose your salvation? – Once saved, always saved! 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” • This is a Baptist belief.
  • 32. Controversy in John 6: 37, 44 &65 37 “All those the Father gives me will come to me, ………” 44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,……” 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.” • What is the controversy in these verses? • Free Will vs. Irresistible Grace(Unconditional Election)
  • 33. Theological Concepts in John 6 • Free Will vs. Irresistible Grace(Unconditional Election) • Free Will – God’s grace can be rejected through rebellion. Man can choose to resist the calling from Jesus to come to Him. • Irresistible Grace – God’s grace and calling cannot be resisted. If the Father wants you to come to Christ, He will effectually draw you to Jesus. • Unconditional Election – God has unconditionally chosen some to be saved and some to be lost.
  • 34. What Do Baptists Believe? • Free Will – Persons are free beings with the power of selfdetermination. • Unlimited Atonement of Christ – Christ died for all. John 3:16 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. • One Role of the Holy Spirit – Draw us to Jesus
  • 35. Theology of Salvation (Frank Page) • G – Grace is given through Christ. • R – Grace may be rejected through rebellion. • A – Grace can be accepted through faith. • C – Grace means that Christ died for all. • E – Grace ensures everlasting life.
  • 36. G – Grace Is Given Through Christ • God’s grace is God’s means of election. John 5:24 24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.
  • 37. R – Grace May Be Rejected Through Rebellion • Man has the choice or free will. Matt 7:13-14 13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
  • 38. A – Grace Can Be Accepted Through Faith • Man has the freedom to accept Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith —and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
  • 39. C – Grace Means That Christ Died For All • Unlimited atonement of Jesus for all. 1 Timothy 2:3-4 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
  • 40. E – Grace Insures Everlasting Life • Eternal Security or Perseverance of Saints John 5:24 24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.
  • 41. The Bread Sermon Continues… John 6:49-52 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down (continually) from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats (once) this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” 52 Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
  • 42. John 6: 53 - 55 53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.
  • 43. John 6:56-59 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
  • 44. Summary John 6:49-59 • You must take all of Jesus, as if you were ingesting him! • Jesus is also speaking of the Lord’s Supper or Eucharist instituted before His death. • He is NOT teaching the sacraments as a second way of salvation. Luke 22:19 -20 19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
  • 45. John 6: 60 -65 60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?” 61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you— they are full of the Spirit and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”
  • 46. Why Is Jesus’ Teaching So Hard to Take? • Constantly speaking of “coming down from heaven” (Jesus said this 6x in John 6) • Constantly self-referring “I AM’s (ego eimi) • Multiple references of “eating my flesh” • The meal that satisfies forever – radical idea! • Unable to accept change. • Comfortable in their sins – not really! • Your thoughts????
  • 47. John 6:66-71 66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. 67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” 70 Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)
  • 48. Many Followers Leave • Jesus’ bread sermon caused a massive loss of disciples. • The major lesson in the defection of disciples is one word – “Purification”. • Others were not willing to commit.
  • 49. Peter Says it Best!! John 6:68-69 “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” Matthew 16: 15-16 15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
  • 50. Take Home Message John 6:29 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” • A personal “trust” relationship with Jesus is the first fundamental step. • Jesus satisfies our thirst and our hunger when we trust. John 3:16 (KJV) 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
