Sub: Fwd: Press meet to condemn Delhi High Court judgment
Dear all,
Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan [BMMA] is doing a press conference on *12th
June 2012 at 3 pm at Marathi Patrakar Sangh, VT* to condemn the judgment of
the Delhi High Court.
The ruling of the Delhi High Court regarding the marriage of a 15 year old
Muslim girl raises many questions. We have demanded 18 years to be the age
of marriage for Muslim girls and 21 years for boys in the codified Muslim
personal law. The definition of puberty cannot be applied in the narrow
physical sense but it means much more than that such as maturity of mind
and emotional capacity to be able to make important life decisions.
Certainly a 15 year old child cannot have this maturity. This judgment
indicates that the Muslim law must be codified and the age of marriage to
be fixed at 18 and 21. If there is a law in place then there won't be
judgments which will contradict a law. We call upon the government and all
sections of society to enable Muslim women to get justice and fairness as
given in the Quran by bringing about a codified Muslim personal law.
