Commodore Burch called the meeting to order at 1902 hours.
The Secretary made a roll call and all members of the board were
present, and thus a quorum was established.
Gwen Butterfield was present from Butterfield Communications
and started by saying CBYC is actively involved in much of her
report, so we probably know more about some of the items than
she does. She specifically referenced the Schooner “America”
that will be at our docks on July 11th. Rear Commodore Callender
said she could certainly use Gwen’s help in causing those permits
to move along more quickly, and Gwen said she would make a
couple of calls.
Director McCloskey presented the Membership Report. He started
by saying we have four MIPs that have completed all the processes
for membership and they just need to be voted in. Accordingly,
he moved that the following MIPS be accepted for membership:
Erick & Jenifer Block (AF), Stephen & Jeralynn Langton (RF),
Steven G. Dair, and John & Gillian (Gilly) Foy (RF). This motion
passed unanimously. Director McCloskey moved that the Millers
be allowed to pay only the difference in the initiation fees to rein
state their membership, which is historically how we have handled
similar cases. This motion passed unanimously.
Fleet Captain Stavros stated that after many years of service to the
Marina Management Committee, Chairman S/C Dale Thompson
has announced his retirement from the committee. His great dedi
cation and knowledge will truly be missed. We currently have
one each of 30’, 36’ 38’ and 40’ slips available. The dredging
project is complete. We currently have three vacant suites in the
commercial building.
Treasurer Feves stated there were no alarming numbers on the
financials, but rather all had been very predictable. He stated that
CBYC had only lost seven regular members since last year and
no regular members that had to be terminated for lack of payment.
There were fifteen Junior or Associate members that needed to
be terminated for lack of payment, and it was so moved, seconded
and passed unanimously. Secretary Perrault presented the minutes
from the June meeting, it was moved and seconded and passed
unanimously to be approved as presented.

One month left of Summer so if you have not spent the amount of time you
would like at the club, then now is the time! August is packed full of oppor-
tunities with us at the Taste of San Pedro, Cook Your Owns, Navy Days for
a week, burger bashs, Ragin Cajun Party, Brunch, Guest Chef, Chili and Rib
Cook-Off, and another Birthday Bar and Band.
As for last month, I would like to thank the Club Staff for their outstanding
work last month with so many events going on and their coverage through
some absences for vacations. I am proud of how well everything was handled and everyone just
stepped up and problem solved their way through every issue - thank you again.
New Parking Stickers and Parking Amnesty coming soon. We have ordered new parking stickers
which will be a new color and you will not need to turn in your old sticker to get a new one which is
where to amnesty comes in. That’s the good news. The bad news is there has been a lot of pressure to
enforce the parking rules so here’s your heads up.
Bon Appétit

I am honored to be a crew member in the
Transpac 2015 and am on my way to Hawaii,
so this will be a quick note.
CBYC is such a great club!
In July we hosted the U.S. Junior Olympic Sailing Festival and the
schooner “America”. Sweet! We should be proud of all the activities we
have at out club.
Someone I have been proud to know is Dan Borders and I am sad to say goodbye to our good
friend and member. We will miss him.
Aloha,
Mike

FLEET CAPTAIN

Cruising Season is upon us! As I write this, the mid-week to Whites Cove Cruise, hosted by the
McMullens, is underway. This cruise will include a special birthday celebration for Steve Thomas,
Happy Birthday Steve! The following weekend is the Get Out of Town Cruise, so please get out of
town! Thank you in advance to everyone who filed a float plan for this cruise, (same weekend as the
PHRF Championship Regatta). And most importantly, a new cruise has been added to replace the Cat
Harbor Cruise, the “August Fest!” (August 14-16). I am going on this cruise, and plan to enjoy the time
at the Isthmus Harbor with my CBYC friends. Come join us!
I had a great time on the 4th of July when Bryan Dair, in a “return to tradition” organized an “Adult in
Small Boat” sail. The spectators laughed to see the adults squeeze into the Cubes used in our Junior
Program, and race from the hoist, to the gulch and back again. It was so much fun, and we are going to do it again next year. Thank
you Bryan!
It is a busy time for the Race Committee, with two major regattas in a three-week period, in addition to running the Wednesday
Night Races every week. We hosted 71 boats during the Junior Olympics and we will have around 30 boats visiting us during the
PHRF Championship Regatta. Our Principal Race Officers, Dixon Hall, Tom Eskridge, Greg Clark, Dennis Dyer, and Steve McJones
do an outstanding job organizing and running our events. Ask them about their most challenging race situations the next time you
see them in the bar!
And finally, I would like to give a special thank you to Steve Jost for capturing the best moments at our club on-film. If you enjoy the
photos of the Schooner America and the Junior Olympics in this edition of the Lighthouse, take the time to tell Steve.
Good Sailing
M’Liz
On August 22, we are having the Chili & Ribs Cook-Off. I hope some of you will
enter your favorite Chili and/or BBQ Ribs. If you decide not to enter the cook off
then join us in the tasting. This year we will have winners for Chili and for Ribs
you cook at home. Special for this year is what we are calling the “PROS” Rib
Cook-Off. The Pros are being coordinated by Reese Lane. Reese is hoping to have
4 or more of the Trailer type smokers here. You’ll have a lot of Chili and a lot of
Ribs for $7.50. In addition, we will be having the Juniors’ Auction. Bill Schopp and
John O’Connor always have great items for the auction. So make your reservation
for the cook-off and stay for the auction.
The Juniors are having a great time in summer sessions. We have had 30 - 40 kids in the sessions each week.
Our Junior sailors went to ABYC for their 4th of July Regatta. CBYC finished as follows: Taft Buckley 1st;
Richard Rychlik Jr., 3rd; Daren Sathasivam, 9th; Colton Felmar, 12th; George Soliman, 14th; Tristan Feves,
16th; Justin Chrien, 20th; and Thomas Kraak, 27th. Special thanks to all the parents and especially to those
parents who towed boats to and from the regattas.
Hope to see you at the Chili Cook-Off.
Thanks,
Mike Stavros

Fleet Captain Stavros reported the Juniors
got off to a fast start with a very success-
ful banquet for the three high school teams
on June 2nd. Monday will start the third
summer session, and we have had about 30
kids for each session. They had a group
at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club for the
Laser Pacific Championships lead by Coach
Steve. There was a second group at the St.
Francis Yacht Club for the Harken Regatta
lead by Coach Cody. Thanks go to Tom
Chrien for organizing the Juniors to help
with the Father’s Day Brunch. He also wanted to thank Harry Meisel for always being there to lend
a needed hand, and in this case repairing the Caribe center console.
Rear Commodore Callender said the mid-week cruise (July 26-30) will be the Whites Cove Cruise
hosted by the McMullens. The “Get Out of Town Cruise” (July 31-August 2) will be hosted by
the Swansons and the Embrees. A new cruise has been added to replace the Cat Harbor Cruise,
the “August Fest” (August 14-16). July 10-12 CBYC will be hosting the US Sailing Junior Olym-
pics, with 80-120 boats anticipated. The PHRF Championship Regatta (August 1-2) may attract 40
boats. The Cal25 Regional Regatta has been cancelled. Sailing with Terry Johnson is now offered
on Wednesday and Friday afternoons as well as once a month on weekends.
Vice Commodore Schopp thanked all the many volunteers that have made this year such a success.
The bar windows have been replaced and are working well. He has found a replacement dishwash-
er. He wanted to thank Bernie Askew and his Lobster Crew as well as Reese Lane and his Rib
Crew for two fabulous events. You should have noticed a beautiful change in the last edition of the
Lighthouse. The entire newsletter is in color.
It was with great sadness that Commodore Burch announced the passing of Dan Borders who is sur-
vived by his wife Masako. Commodore Burch opened the discussion of club parking. Staff Com-
modores, Flag Officers and staff need to park in the spaces assigned to them. Signs indicating per-
mit parking only need to be displayed on busy weekends. It was then moved that we purchase new
permits, the green parking stickers will become obsolete and will be replaced with blue stickers.
The information concerning the new stickers will be distributed via posting on the gates, emails to
the members and also be published in the Lighthouse. This motion passed. There being no further
business before the regular board meeting the meeting was adjourned at 20:28 hours. Respectfully
submitted by Secretary Karen Perrault.

August Cruiser’s Corner
By Jim Clark, Cruise Committee
Cruise Schedule
July has been a little slow for CBYC cruises. We had the Dinghy
Poker Run (I missed it, bummer). It was great fun, again, from
what I’ve heard. But, at the writing of this article, we haven’t had
a single cruise that left the marina. What’s with that? When we do
the schedule for next year, what do you all think about a cruise
mid July?
Coming up, we have the White’s Cove Cruise directly followed by
the Get Out of Town over the weekend. CBYC needs your slip for
the race boats, so leave already! Or stay and help out. It is always
great fun to help out around the club.
The Whites Cove Cruise (July 26~30) is hosted by the McMullens.
Check out the picture to the right. Beautiful, isn’t it? If you are
going on the White’s Cruise and want to “stay out of town”, all you
have to do is pull up anchor and head west to the Isthmus. There
begins the Get Out of Town Cruise hosted by the Swansons and
the Embrees.
Well, the Ballast Point facility in Cat Harbor is still not available.
So, the new August Fest Cruise; “Beer and Brats on the Beach” is
officially on. Someone suggested that on Saturday night, everyone
could bring a six-pack of their favorite microbrew and we could
do a beer tasting. If this sounds like fun to you, perhaps you could
volunteer to organize it. Give Kathy Embree a call. Micro Brews…
this is now my favorite cruise! I will surely not miss this one and I
hope you won’t either.
Remember that anytime that you are planning on being away from your slip for more than a day; please file a Float Plan
with our Marina Management. This way, your slip can be used for visiting yachtsmen when our guest dock is full. Having
slips readily available to other yacht clubs greatly benefits our club and members by providing goodwill for those seeking
reciprocation elsewhere.
I’ve asked in the last several Cruisers’ Corner if anyone is interested in a clinic on a specific cruising topic. Not a single
call or email. So once more… If there is enough interest, the Cruising Committee is willing to organize a clinic on any
topic to be held during a General Meeting. Topics may be: navigation, weather interpretation, anchoring, provisioning
with and without refrigeration, hosting a cruise, etc. If you have a specific request, please contact Jeff or Kathy Embree at
jcat42@yahoo.com. I look forward to seeing you all on our upcoming cruises.

Fourth of July Dinghy Poker Run
By Cathy Fox
The sun shone, the drinks flowed, the play-
ers played… Due to the generosity of our
CBYC volunteers we were able to increase
the number of stations to seven this year.
Challenges included puzzle solving, tests of
agility & physical prowess, marksmanship and
games of chance. This was our fourth annu-
al run, attracting both seasoned veterans and
newcomers alike. Everyone rose to the occasion,
whether paddling, rowing or motoring.
First and foremost, thank you to Sherwood &
Caroline, Rusty, Mary, Bill & Nancy, Kurt &
Dara, Al & Sandy, Joy, Linda & family, Sue &
Jim, Jeff & Kathy, the office staff and Dean. We
really couldn’t have done it without you!
Top poker hand honors were awarded in two
separate categories: Best combined hand, which
after 60 seconds of trading, went to club mem-
ber Murray Beebe who managed to accumu-
late five aces; and best individual hand, earned
by Murray’s friend Chris Karr, who against all
odds, managed to collect four aces with a king
kicker.

The Lighthouse, August 2015 11
It should be noted that, inspired by Mur-
ray and Chris’ bedraggled appearance at
the finish line, a Wet T Shirt contest may
be added to the agenda next year.
Cheers and jeers abounded during the ensuing
raffle: Watching the winners attempt to dis-
embark their respective water craft in order to
collect a prize, was in itself, a crowd pleaser!
(Cyndee, top right)
A big thank you to all our fun-loving,
entertaining, never-say-no partici-
pants. See you same time next year.
You are the best!

Safety & Security Corner
Navy Days LA is Here Again!
The Port of Los Angeles is not a regular port of call for vessels of the United States Navy.
There will be several in port from August 4 to 11. Please take a moment to review the
restrictions on navigating a vessel in their vicinity. This information, and more, may be accessed
directly at the Boat US website under the Navigation and Maneuvering tab or buy typing in the
following URL: http://www.boatus.org/guide/navigation_38.html
National Security
Current world events are touching our lives as never before. As a boater, you may be placed
in a situation that may put you in legal jeopardy, if not at risk of injury or worse.
Knowing how to act in certain areas or situations can not only make your trip more enjoyable,
it can help protect our country.
Naval Vessel Protection Zones
One thing you must contend with if you boat in certain areas of the country are Naval Vessel
Protection Zones. These zones are designed to prevent attacks against our navy by placing
restrictions on how closely you may
come to a naval vessel.
The requirements are:
• You may not approach within 100 yards of any U.S. naval vessel. Sometimes this is an
impossible thing to accomplish. If you need to pass within 100 yards of a U.S. naval vessel
in order to ensure a safe passage in accordance with the Navigation Rules, you must contact
the U.S. naval vessel or the Coast Guard escort vessel on your VHF radio (Channel 16).
• You must operate at minimum speed within 500 yards of any U.S. naval vessel. You must
proceed as directed by the vessels' commanding officer, or the official patrol.
Violations of the Naval Vessel Protection Zone are a felony offense, punishable by up
to 6 years in prison and/or up to $250,000 in fines.
And don't forget, both the Navy and the Coast Guard are authorized to use deadly force
to protect themselves...

Cameron Feves Takes 3rd place in the Laser Class
Twenty-five Lasers competed in near perfect conditions, surfing the swells by the
Pt. Fermin buoy. Local favorite, Cameron Feves, took top place in two of the twelve
races, finishing the regatta two points out of second place. Cameron demonstrated
local knowledge, improving his standing as the wind gusted to 24 knots.
the Junior Olympics were a huge success!
CBYC hosted its first US Sailing
Junior Olympic Festival over three
days, July 10th-12th. Over 100 sailors
ages 14 to 19 came from Santa
Barbara to San Diego to compete in
the famed Hurricane Gulch. Principal
Race Officers Mike Segerbloom and
Steve McJones held a total of 12 races
both inside the breakwater and out
on the ocean. The conditions were
excellent all three days, 12 to 20 knots
of breeze.

Dan Borders - Eight Bells
December 23, 1942 – July 6, 2015
Dan was born in Sanger, CA on Dec. 23rd, 1942 and passed away on July 6th, 2015
in Torrance, CA. He grew up in Sanger and graduated from Sanger High School and
Fresno City College. He earned a B.S. degree in Business from California State Uni-
versity, Fresno, in 1963.
He is survived by Masako Borders, his loving wife of 27 years, sons Ryan Borders,
Freemont, CA and Devlin Borders, Minneapolis, MN, stepson Jim Stickney, San Di-
ego, CA, granddaughter Chelsea Hanke, Canoga Park, CA.
His career included 25 years in financial management with Teledyne, Fairchild Litton,
Ampex and Measurex. He was a founding partner in four businesses and provided
advisory services to businesses for 11 years. He lived and worked the Bay Area for
over 40 years.
Dan enjoyed a wide variety of activities and interests. He loved flying and was checked out in 22 different planes and
logged over 1,800 hours. He owned two airplanes, a Citabria for aerobatics and a Mooney. He was a member of the Del
Amo Flyers Club. He also loved sailing. He sailed and raced in San Francisco Bay in a Catalina 28. He raced a Cal 20 at
CBYC and enjoyed power boating and cruising in his Formula 34. His other passion was cars. He was the proud owner
of a 1959 Austin Healey Roadster, Bentley Arnage, and a 2003 Corvette convertible.
Dan also enjoyed skiing, swimming, pistol shooting, reading, fishing, playing the tenor sax, learning magic, traveling
and cruising. He authored a book, “Sailor’s Guide to Nautical Drinks”. Dan was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He was a talented, interesting, and personable man. He was always one to help a friend and share a laugh or story. His
family and friends will miss him.
Ode to Dan Borders
On behalf of our fellow cruisers, we take this opportunity to pay a special tribute to our
very dear friend, Dan Borders, who passed over the bar much too soon. Dan was a very
special man, who was always there to help in any way he could. He loved boating, flying
and driving fast cars. He loved his family. He loved his fellow club members. He loved
life and lived it to the fullest. We’ll all miss him terribly but I know that he’ll be right
there with us each and every time we go out on a race, attend a cruise, or have a drink at
the bar. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Masako, along with all of the other
members of his family. Farewell, dear friend. We’ll miss you…

A special two-hour sailing excursion was sponsored by
CBYC for 76 special invited guests, including youth from the
Toberman House and Rainbow Services.
“Such a spectacular afternoon sail, the children enjoyed themselves and were very thankful
for the opportunity. It was great seeing their smiling faces and enthusiasm about stepping
foot on a boat. On behalf of Rainbow I cannot thank you enough for providing me this
experience; to see the children worry free and joyful. Port of LA and CBYC, thank you for
the memories you have helped create.” Dulce Varga, Rainbow Services
Local Youth Hosted by CBYC
“I really enjoyed being on the
water, meeting new people
and being part of introducing
kids to my passion for sailing. I
particularly enjoyed meeting a
woman and her autistic grand-
daughter who had never been on
a boat before. After the grand-
daughter got comfortable with
the boat and her surroundings,
her eyes lit up with full connection
and enthusiasm for sailing. She
and her grandmother asked how
to find sailing lessons. Of course,
told them about the Cabrillo
Beach Yacht Club sailing school
where all are welcome. It is
wonderful to reel people into
such a wonderful sport! I hope I
see her on the water again!"

The Secretary made a roll call and all members of the board were present, and thus a quorum was established. Gwen Butterfield was present from Butterfield Communications and started by saying CBYC is actively involved in much of her report, so we probably know more about some of the items than she does. She specifically referenced the Schooner “America” that will be at our docks on July 11th. Rear Commodore Callender said she could certainly use Gwen’s help in causing those permits to move along more quickly, and Gwen said she would make a couple of calls. Director McCloskey presented the Membership Report. He started by saying we have four MIPs that have completed all the processes for membership and they just need to be voted in. Accordingly, he moved that the following MIPS be accepted for membership: Erick & Jenifer Block (AF), Stephen & Jeralynn Langton (RF), Steven G. Dair, and John & Gillian (Gilly) Foy (RF). This motion passed unanimously. Director McCloskey moved that the Millers be allowed to pay only the difference in the initiation fees to rein state their membership, which is historically how we have handled similar cases. This motion passed unanimously. Fleet Captain Stavros stated that after many years of service to the Marina Management Committee, Chairman S/C Dale Thompson has announced his retirement from the committee. His great dedi cation and knowledge will truly be missed. We currently have one each of 30’, 36’ 38’ and 40’ slips available. The dredging project is complete. We currently have three vacant suites in the commercial building. Treasurer Feves stated there were no alarming numbers on the financials, but rather all had been very predictable. He stated that CBYC had only lost seven regular members since last year and no regular members that had to be terminated for lack of payment. There were fifteen Junior or Associate members that needed to be terminated for lack of payment, and it was so moved, seconded and passed unanimously. Secretary Perrault presented the minutes from the June meeting, it was moved and seconded and passed unanimously to be approved as presented.

Visit us online at www.cbyc.org | Copyright 2014 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro The Lighthouse, August 2015 4 COMMODORE Mike Burch One month left of Summer so if you have not spent the amount of time you would like at the club, then now is the time! August is packed full of oppor- tunities with us at the Taste of San Pedro, Cook Your Owns, Navy Days for a week, burger bashs, Ragin Cajun Party, Brunch, Guest Chef, Chili and Rib Cook-Off, and another Birthday Bar and Band. As for last month, I would like to thank the Club Staff for their outstanding work last month with so many events going on and their coverage through some absences for vacations. I am proud of how well everything was handled and everyone just stepped up and problem solved their way through every issue - thank you again. New Parking Stickers and Parking Amnesty coming soon. We have ordered new parking stickers which will be a new color and you will not need to turn in your old sticker to get a new one which is where to amnesty comes in. That’s the good news. The bad news is there has been a lot of pressure to enforce the parking rules so here’s your heads up. Bon Appétit Bill Schopp I am honored to be a crew member in the Transpac 2015 and am on my way to Hawaii, so this will be a quick note. CBYC is such a great club! In July we hosted the U.S. Junior Olympic Sailing Festival and the schooner “America”. Sweet! We should be proud of all the activities we have at out club. Someone I have been proud to know is Dan Borders and I am sad to say goodbye to our good friend and member. We will miss him. Aloha, Mike VICE COMMODORE Bill Schopp Flag Officers Report
  • 5. Visit us online at www.cbyc.org | Copyright 2014 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro The Lighthouse, August 2015 5 REAR COMMODORE M’Liz Callendar FLEET CAPTAIN Mike Stavros Cruising Season is upon us! As I write this, the mid-week to Whites Cove Cruise, hosted by the McMullens, is underway. This cruise will include a special birthday celebration for Steve Thomas, Happy Birthday Steve! The following weekend is the Get Out of Town Cruise, so please get out of town! Thank you in advance to everyone who filed a float plan for this cruise, (same weekend as the PHRF Championship Regatta). And most importantly, a new cruise has been added to replace the Cat Harbor Cruise, the “August Fest!” (August 14-16). I am going on this cruise, and plan to enjoy the time at the Isthmus Harbor with my CBYC friends. Come join us! I had a great time on the 4th of July when Bryan Dair, in a “return to tradition” organized an “Adult in Small Boat” sail. The spectators laughed to see the adults squeeze into the Cubes used in our Junior Program, and race from the hoist, to the gulch and back again. It was so much fun, and we are going to do it again next year. Thank you Bryan! It is a busy time for the Race Committee, with two major regattas in a three-week period, in addition to running the Wednesday Night Races every week. We hosted 71 boats during the Junior Olympics and we will have around 30 boats visiting us during the PHRF Championship Regatta. Our Principal Race Officers, Dixon Hall, Tom Eskridge, Greg Clark, Dennis Dyer, and Steve McJones do an outstanding job organizing and running our events. Ask them about their most challenging race situations the next time you see them in the bar! And finally, I would like to give a special thank you to Steve Jost for capturing the best moments at our club on-film. If you enjoy the photos of the Schooner America and the Junior Olympics in this edition of the Lighthouse, take the time to tell Steve. Good Sailing M’Liz On August 22, we are having the Chili & Ribs Cook-Off. I hope some of you will enter your favorite Chili and/or BBQ Ribs. If you decide not to enter the cook off then join us in the tasting. This year we will have winners for Chili and for Ribs you cook at home. Special for this year is what we are calling the “PROS” Rib Cook-Off. The Pros are being coordinated by Reese Lane. Reese is hoping to have 4 or more of the Trailer type smokers here. You’ll have a lot of Chili and a lot of Ribs for $7.50. In addition, we will be having the Juniors’ Auction. Bill Schopp and John O’Connor always have great items for the auction. So make your reservation for the cook-off and stay for the auction. The Juniors are having a great time in summer sessions. We have had 30 - 40 kids in the sessions each week. Our Junior sailors went to ABYC for their 4th of July Regatta. CBYC finished as follows: Taft Buckley 1st; Richard Rychlik Jr., 3rd; Daren Sathasivam, 9th; Colton Felmar, 12th; George Soliman, 14th; Tristan Feves, 16th; Justin Chrien, 20th; and Thomas Kraak, 27th. Special thanks to all the parents and especially to those parents who towed boats to and from the regattas. Hope to see you at the Chili Cook-Off. Thanks, Mike Stavros
  • 6. Visit us online at www.cbyc.org | Copyright 2014 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro The Lighthouse, August 2015 6 Fleet Captain Stavros reported the Juniors got off to a fast start with a very success- ful banquet for the three high school teams on June 2nd. Monday will start the third summer session, and we have had about 30 kids for each session. They had a group at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club for the Laser Pacific Championships lead by Coach Steve. There was a second group at the St. Francis Yacht Club for the Harken Regatta lead by Coach Cody. Thanks go to Tom Chrien for organizing the Juniors to help with the Father’s Day Brunch. He also wanted to thank Harry Meisel for always being there to lend a needed hand, and in this case repairing the Caribe center console. Rear Commodore Callender said the mid-week cruise (July 26-30) will be the Whites Cove Cruise hosted by the McMullens. The “Get Out of Town Cruise” (July 31-August 2) will be hosted by the Swansons and the Embrees. A new cruise has been added to replace the Cat Harbor Cruise, the “August Fest” (August 14-16). July 10-12 CBYC will be hosting the US Sailing Junior Olym- pics, with 80-120 boats anticipated. The PHRF Championship Regatta (August 1-2) may attract 40 boats. The Cal25 Regional Regatta has been cancelled. Sailing with Terry Johnson is now offered on Wednesday and Friday afternoons as well as once a month on weekends. Vice Commodore Schopp thanked all the many volunteers that have made this year such a success. The bar windows have been replaced and are working well. He has found a replacement dishwash- er. He wanted to thank Bernie Askew and his Lobster Crew as well as Reese Lane and his Rib Crew for two fabulous events. You should have noticed a beautiful change in the last edition of the Lighthouse. The entire newsletter is in color. It was with great sadness that Commodore Burch announced the passing of Dan Borders who is sur- vived by his wife Masako. Commodore Burch opened the discussion of club parking. Staff Com- modores, Flag Officers and staff need to park in the spaces assigned to them. Signs indicating per- mit parking only need to be displayed on busy weekends. It was then moved that we purchase new permits, the green parking stickers will become obsolete and will be replaced with blue stickers. The information concerning the new stickers will be distributed via posting on the gates, emails to the members and also be published in the Lighthouse. This motion passed. There being no further business before the regular board meeting the meeting was adjourned at 20:28 hours. Respectfully submitted by Secretary Karen Perrault. Minutes of the Board of Directors July 7, 2015 (continued from page 3.)

We had the Dinghy Poker Run (I missed it, bummer). It was great fun, again, from what I’ve heard. But, at the writing of this article, we haven’t had a single cruise that left the marina. What’s with that? When we do the schedule for next year, what do you all think about a cruise mid July? Coming up, we have the White’s Cove Cruise directly followed by the Get Out of Town over the weekend. CBYC needs your slip for the race boats, so leave already! Or stay and help out. It is always great fun to help out around the club. The Whites Cove Cruise (July 26~30) is hosted by the McMullens. Check out the picture to the right. Beautiful, isn’t it? If you are going on the White’s Cruise and want to “stay out of town”, all you have to do is pull up anchor and head west to the Isthmus. There begins the Get Out of Town Cruise hosted by the Swansons and the Embrees. Well, the Ballast Point facility in Cat Harbor is still not available. So, the new August Fest Cruise; “Beer and Brats on the Beach” is officially on. Someone suggested that on Saturday night, everyone could bring a six-pack of their favorite microbrew and we could do a beer tasting. If this sounds like fun to you, perhaps you could volunteer to organize it. Give Kathy Embree a call. Micro Brews… this is now my favorite cruise! I will surely not miss this one and I hope you won’t either. Remember that anytime that you are planning on being away from your slip for more than a day; please file a Float Plan with our Marina Management. This way, your slip can be used for visiting yachtsmen when our guest dock is full. Having slips readily available to other yacht clubs greatly benefits our club and members by providing goodwill for those seeking reciprocation elsewhere. I’ve asked in the last several Cruisers’ Corner if anyone is interested in a clinic on a specific cruising topic. Not a single call or email. So once more… If there is enough interest, the Cruising Committee is willing to organize a clinic on any topic to be held during a General Meeting. Topics may be: navigation, weather interpretation, anchoring, provisioning with and without refrigeration, hosting a cruise, etc. If you have a specific request, please contact Jeff or Kathy Embree at jcat42@yahoo.com. I look forward to seeing you all on our upcoming cruises.

  • 10. Visit us online at www.cbyc.org | Copyright 2014 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro The Lighthouse, August 2015 10 Fourth of July Dinghy Poker Run By Cathy Fox The sun shone, the drinks flowed, the play- ers played… Due to the generosity of our CBYC volunteers we were able to increase the number of stations to seven this year. Challenges included puzzle solving, tests of agility & physical prowess, marksmanship and games of chance. This was our fourth annu- al run, attracting both seasoned veterans and newcomers alike. Everyone rose to the occasion, whether paddling, rowing or motoring. First and foremost, thank you to Sherwood & Caroline, Rusty, Mary, Bill & Nancy, Kurt & Dara, Al & Sandy, Joy, Linda & family, Sue & Jim, Jeff & Kathy, the office staff and Dean. We really couldn’t have done it without you! Top poker hand honors were awarded in two separate categories: Best combined hand, which after 60 seconds of trading, went to club mem- ber Murray Beebe who managed to accumu- late five aces; and best individual hand, earned by Murray’s friend Chris Karr, who against all odds, managed to collect four aces with a king kicker.
  • 11. Visit us online at www.cbyc.org | Copyright 2014 Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club, San Pedro The Lighthouse, August 2015 11 It should be noted that, inspired by Mur- ray and Chris’ bedraggled appearance at the finish line, a Wet T Shirt contest may be added to the agenda next year. Cheers and jeers abounded during the ensuing raffle: Watching the winners attempt to dis- embark their respective water craft in order to collect a prize, was in itself, a crowd pleaser! (Cyndee, top right) A big thank you to all our fun-loving, entertaining, never-say-no partici- pants. See you same time next year. You are the best!

The Port of Los Angeles is not a regular port of call for vessels of the United States Navy. There will be several in port from August 4 to 11. Please take a moment to review the restrictions on navigating a vessel in their vicinity. This information, and more, may be accessed directly at the Boat US website under the Navigation and Maneuvering tab or buy typing in the following URL: http://www.boatus.org/guide/navigation_38.html National Security Current world events are touching our lives as never before. As a boater, you may be placed in a situation that may put you in legal jeopardy, if not at risk of injury or worse. Knowing how to act in certain areas or situations can not only make your trip more enjoyable, it can help protect our country. Naval Vessel Protection Zones One thing you must contend with if you boat in certain areas of the country are Naval Vessel Protection Zones. These zones are designed to prevent attacks against our navy by placing restrictions on how closely you may come to a naval vessel. The requirements are: • You may not approach within 100 yards of any U.S. naval vessel. Sometimes this is an impossible thing to accomplish. If you need to pass within 100 yards of a U.S. naval vessel in order to ensure a safe passage in accordance with the Navigation Rules, you must contact the U.S. naval vessel or the Coast Guard escort vessel on your VHF radio (Channel 16). • You must operate at minimum speed within 500 yards of any U.S. naval vessel. You must proceed as directed by the vessels' commanding officer, or the official patrol. Violations of the Naval Vessel Protection Zone are a felony offense, punishable by up to 6 years in prison and/or up to $250,000 in fines. And don't forget, both the Navy and the Coast Guard are authorized to use deadly force to protect themselves...

It was great seeing their smiling faces and enthusiasm about stepping foot on a boat. On behalf of Rainbow I cannot thank you enough for providing me this experience; to see the children worry free and joyful. Port of LA and CBYC, thank you for the memories you have helped create.” Dulce Varga, Rainbow Services Local Youth Hosted by CBYC “I really enjoyed being on the water, meeting new people and being part of introducing kids to my passion for sailing. I particularly enjoyed meeting a woman and her autistic grand- daughter who had never been on a boat before. After the grand- daughter got comfortable with the boat and her surroundings, her eyes lit up with full connection and enthusiasm for sailing. She and her grandmother asked how to find sailing lessons. Of course, told them about the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club sailing school where all are welcome. It is wonderful to reel people into such a wonderful sport! I hope I see her on the water again!" CBYC volunteer chaperone, Geraldine Lampert
