38. Words from the Wise Phillip DeFranco- “sXePhil” “Try to not become the robot it pushes you to [be].” “It’s about balance.” “Have FUN with it!” Michael Buckley- “WhatTheBuck” If you make videos, don’t let the praise go to your head, and don’t let the mean things go to your heart.” Don’t forget to utilize your YouTube Insight. Be aware of your audience. Think twice before using “inside jokes.” It may be someone’s first time to watch your videos. Shawn Ahmed- “Uncultured” It’s not always about getting people to donate money Just get involved!
39. Words from the Wise ZeFrank The connection between the creator and the audience is what separates new and traditional media. Every community online is a “network.” Each one is different with its own shape, taste, and feel. Once you have identified your network, you must examine its “rules of participation.” (ex: What thumbnail will get you the most views?) “We strive to feel and be felt. But connecting with people isn’t easy, both in virtual life and in the physical life.” “Authenticity is hard work, and might not be as catchy.”
40. Words from the Wise Professional Panel of Ben & Rafi Fine (“TheFineBros”), Dane Boedigheimer (“DaneBoe”), Ben Relles (“BarelyPolitical”), & James & Tyler McFadden (“GoPotato”) It may be more time consuming to produce professional content, BUT that’s what you need to stand out from the crowd. Balance between the projects that take a while versus those you can produce quickly. Producing professional content is worth it because it has the opportunity for licensing (whereas lower quality won’t even be considered as it wouldn’t cut it on TV or DVD). Collaboration isn’t something just for “vloggers.” It’s hard to “play the game” professionally. Don’t forget that you can engage with your audience OUTSIDE of YouTube. Make sure you have a TOPIC. Note that the business model for online video advertising is still evolving.
41. Words from the Wise Greg Benson – “MediocreFilms” and “TheGuild” DIVERSIFICATION! (Rev Share, Selling rights, Licensing, product placement & branding) Transparency is important.
