Pompeii By Keller, Robert, Anna, Helen, Olivia and Christina
Patricians The father was the owner of his wife, children and slaves. The father was the leader of the family. The families were grouped into clans or “gens” which would have a common ancestor.
Gladiators Anybody can become a gladiator. Prisoners could chose between slavery or to become a gladiator. Gladiators get special training from special trainers for special fights.
Plebeians (Plebs) Plebeians were the people who worked for the patricians. Plebeians lived in 3 or 4 story apartments with no bathrooms and poorly built houses. The rooms were often crowded with two families in one room. They use pots for toilets. The pot would be emptied out the window which made a terrible smell. Some people can get denied from being a plebeian.
Rules for a Slave Some wealthy Pompeii people kept underground prisons for slaves that didn’t follow the rules. Slaves were expected to cook, clean and keep the fires going for bath houses. If a slave killed their master not just that slave would be killed but all the other slaves nearby would be as well. If you were born and your mother was a slave you were also a slave. This is how the Romans kept large numbers of slaves.
Slave Families Wealthier families would have hundreds or dozens of slaves. Less wealthy families would have up to 3 slaves. Sometimes even the working class had their own slave. Female slaves were the maids to the Mistress or housekeepers. Slaves were not allowed to marry. Masters with a lot of slaves would let slaves pair up.
Clothing The men wore woolen robes called togas over their tunics. The women wore stolas which are pretty much like togas. Tunics are their underclothes. They had different types of cloaks for men and women. They didn’t wear any underwear.
Pompeian Perfumes They made their perfumes from flowers and plants. They also used olive oil in their perfumes. They made their perfume bottles out of gold and glass.
Make-Up The makeup women wore was a paste spread all over the face to make it look white. They also mixed the paste with red dye for blush or lipstick. They tinted the paste with soot to darken their eyebrows.
Jewellery They used a brooch to hold their clothes together. They used a fibula which is a large safety pin that was used to fasten their clothes. They made their jewellery out of gold and jewels.
Footwear and Hair Accessories Women wore bone, wooden hairsticks or combs, which they used to comb their hair. They wore leather sandals or leather boots in cold weather.
Washing in Pompeii Slaves used animal and human urine to clean their masters clothes. The Romans washed their clothes in urine. Slaves stomped on the urine and clothes to clean them.
Wealthy Peoples Houses If wealthy people lived in busy streets they would normally rent the two front rooms. Wealthy families would have a large hole in the middle of the roof to collect rain water. Beds in Ancient Rome were made out of wood.
Things we have learnt while making the Pompeii slideshow. Record our voices on the yellow microphone. How to put the sound onto the computer. How to convert mp3 files to wav files using Switch Sound file Converter so we could add them to powerpoint. To hyperlink websites in powerpoint. We have learnt how to copy and paste a picture that says it can’t be saved from internet. Learnt how to add sound to powerpoint. We learnt how to make the slides move without using the mouse. We learnt how to make the words and our voices move together. We learnt how to make part of a picture transparent using Publisher. We learnt more about Pompeii.
