The Woodstock Artists Association & Museum, located at 28 Tinker Street in Woodstock, will exhibit new work by Randall Schmit in an exhibition entitled, 'Sans Serif', 06 September through 05 October, 2014 in the museum's Solo Gallery.
The artist's new paintings marry surrealist figuration to abstract gestures within a spare, drawn landscape producing a hybrid style that is graphic novel, surrealist, and abstract expressionist.
Simplified to the most minimal brushwork, the new surrealist paintings attempt to define a shifting and disorienting world, where formal elements create a yin-yang vibration between spare spaces, joining secular and mythical images within ambiguous spaces, and offering several stories within each panel.

“Randall Schmit's paintings often pose existential questions that are both metaphorical and
openly psychological...few artists today are capable of retaining the kind of eccentric beauty,
confessional poetics, and sheer visual power that characterizes the work of Randall Schmit.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 25 August, 2014
Woodstock, NY—
The Woodstock Artists Association & Museum, located at 28 Tinker Street in Woodstock, will
exhibit new work by Randall Schmit in an exhibition entitled, Sans Serif, 06 September through
05 October, 2014 in the museum’s Solo Gallery.
Simplified to the most minimal brushwork, the new surrealist expressions are at once graphic
and expressive. They attempt to define a shifting and disorienting world, where formal elements
create a yin-yang vibration between spare spaces, joining secular and mythical images within
ambiguous spaces, and offering several stories within each panel.
Schmit’s narrative investigations of situational space have incorporated comic imagery for nearly
three decades. Here, consistently presented within various areas and compartments, conversation
bubbles pose as hard-edged biomorphic abstraction and imply a (clairvoyant?) dialogue between
figures. The artist’s new paintings marry surrealist figuration to abstract gestures within a spare,
drawn landscape producing a hybrid style that is at once graphic novel, surrealist, and abstract
expressionist.
A brief essay by Robert C. Morgan accompanies the exhibition.
A reception with the artist will be held on Saturday, 6 September from 4:00—6:00 pm.
Both the event and the exhibit are free and open to the public.
