Rodel: Not so much. But I admire the beauty of orchids. What
makes it
interesting?
Sonia: Their flowers come in many different bright and vibrant
colors. Maybe you’ve seen them in gardens, or in flower
arrangements like bouquets and corsages.
Rodel: Yes, I have seen some in our neighbor’s botanical gardens.
Tell me more about one of the most beautiful orchids in the world.
Sonia: Waling-waling?
Rodel: Yes. What makes it so popular?
Sonia: Of all the orchids, waling-waling has the much-sought-after
round shape with overlapping petals and sepals. The flowers are
flat and ideal for corsage making. Would you believe it was
originally found growing wild only in the Philippines?
Rodel: How was it discovered?
Sonia: How waling-waling was discovered in Mindanao is an
exciting story of adventure and surprises. Many stories and events
have been told about the waling-waling but none as exciting as
going to the city of Davao and seeing the best one.
Rodel: Is it considered now as one of the endangered species?
Sonia: Waling-waling is now very rare in the wild. Today, this
flower is an endangered species. This flower is the most important
contribution to the orchid world.
Rodel: Really? I think we should be proud of it and help curb its
extinction.
