Solving Equations Involving Absolute Values
The absolute value can be thought of as its distance from 0 on a number line.
Any positive and negative number are each a positive distance from 0.
Absolute values are only concerned with distance rather than direction
Ex. If the absolute value of m = 17, what are the possible values of m
Ex. If x + 2 = 12
a) What are the possible values that x + 2 might equal?
b) What are the possible values for x?

6. You must solve two equations
One when the value of is equal to the positive value of
the right side
The other when the value of is equal to a negative value
of the right side
Once you find all of the possible values for x you must then check
your solutions in the equation
You will find through your check that some of the solutions may not
be possible
