MISSION
Artrain uses the power of arts and culture to transform lives, organizations and communities.
VISION
Artrain’s vision is that every person, every classroom and every community should have access
to quality arts and cultural programs regardless of location or economic status.
ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS
Artrain strives to provide excellent cultural experiences through its exhibition, education and
community programs.
Artrain strives to provide excellent service to its constituents: visitors, volunteers, donors,
educators, board and staff.
Artrain strives to model best practices in its administration, museum, education, facility and
development practices.
ABOUT ARTRAIN
Artrain is “the Mobile Museum Authority,” bringing art and cultural exhibitions and educational
programs to communities with limited or no access to conventional museums. Initially building
on the great democratizing power of America’s rail system, Artrain now utilizes the country’s
highways to deliver award-winning exhibitions of art and culture in specially designed Mobile
Museum Units (MMUs) fashioned from connectable and expandable semi-trailers.
But Artrain is more than just a traveling museum. It directly realizes its mission by working
with leaders in each host community to galvanize support and interest in arts and cultural
programs. In this role, Artrain serves as a cultural catalyst, starting or strengthening hundreds
of cultural organizations.
Winner of the 2006 National Medal for Museum Service, Artrain was founded in 1971. More
than 3.2 million people have visited Artrain during 845 community visits across the nation.
Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Artrain is a national arts and culture resource.

AMERICA: NOW + HERE
In spring 2008, Artrain began working with Eric
Fischl to realize his concept of inviting American
artists to create a new work on the subject of
America and to tour these works to cities and
towns across the country. Utilizing its forty
years of experience in developing and touring a
mobile museum, Artrain helped guide the first
phase of America: Now + Here exhibition to
develop the exhibition, build donor support and
design the tour plan. The exhibition grew to
include playwrights, poets, musicians and
filmmakers in addition to visual artists. All
in all, over 150 artists contributed to AN+H.
The initial project phase concluded in
September 2009 when Eric Fischl established
a new nonprofit, America: Now + Here, Inc.,
to take the project through to completion.
Artrain has concluded its work and is no longer
involved with the project. Artrain is proud of its
association with the America: Now + Here
exhibition and the work it created and managed
for the project.
FROM RAILS TO ROADS
While keeping true to its mission, Artrain has had to
reposition itself periodically to keep current and vital.
Artrain’s most recent transition began in 2007 when it
was determined that its most visible mode of delivery—
the train museum—was no longer viable. To replace
it, Artrain commissioned the Mobile Museum Units.
This new mode of travel would allow access to more
communities, a more flexible travel schedule and, for the
first time in its history, the ability to tour more than one
project at any given time. The blueprints and buildout
specifications for the MMUs are completed and ready to
be built.
